CHAPERONES: Class will meet Monday only in the Holiday Hall of the Decatur Conf. Center. King's Kids (KK – 3 to 12 years of age): meet during Sessions I and II. Baptist Youth Fellowship (BYF Ages 13-18): “Select” one class that will meet during Session I. Young Adult Explosion (Ages 19-29): “Select” one class that will meet during Session I.

SPECIAL CLASSES AND GROUPS:

Audio-Visuals Resources in Christian Education Courses will be offered during this session. Persons desiring to participate in these classes must bring a Laptop with Microsoft Office software installed.

Evangelical Training Association (ETA) Partnership -- Baptist General State Congress has a partnership with the Evangelical Training Association. Since 1930 ETA has been committed to one passion—providing training, programs, materials, and services that help Christian churches and education organizations achieve their goal of equipping lay leaders for transformational ministry within and through the local church. ETA is a recognized leader in developing lay leaders to more effectively realize Christ’s Great Commission. During the Annual Congress Session two courses of study are offered. Certificates of Participation and Completion are issued from the Evangelical Training Association.

Discussion Groups and Lecture series are designated for specific topic areas and will be listed in

accordance to Divisions. Participants in the specified topic areas will meet Tuesday through

Thursday and will be provided with general thematic emphases on the work in which delegates

engage within their local Church.

This course identifies methods and approaches to Bible study that can lead to spiritual growth and Christian maturity. Areas that will be covered include the structure of the Bible, resources for personal study and other subjects that will add meaning to the reading of the Bible.

This course will aid the students in accumulating as much Bible knowledge as possible. Students will be provided with information about the politics, geography, language and biblical background information that will enable the students to have a better understanding of the Bible.

This course will survey the Old Testament. Included in this survey will be a general overview of the divisions, time periods, places, events, people and archaeology of the Old Testament

This course will present a historical and character overview of the entire prophetic ministry in the Old Testament, focusing on the backgrounds, time periods, places, events, people and archaeology of the Old Testament section of the Bible.

This course will focus on the Synoptic Gospels – Matthew, Mark and Luke. Students will study the life and ministry of Jesus Christ as portrayed by these three writers. Through this comparative study, students will gain a more comprehensive understanding of Jesus’ ministry.

This course will focus on the fourth Gospel and its uniqueness. Students will identify the specific features that characterize John’s Gospel and distinguish it from the Synoptic Gospels, with emphasis on John’s writings and the ministry of Jesus Christ.

This course will focus on the book of Revelation with emphases on authorship, date, theme and recipients. The prophetic themes, symbols and interpretations of various revelations will be discussed.

This course will cover the basic tenets of Christian Stewardship – time, talent and tithe. Students will learn how to effectively manage their resources through a better understanding of the spiritual principles, practices and contributions of Christian Stewardship.

This course examines with simplicity and clarity the basic teachings of the Baptist faith. Students will explore each doctrinal position and the basis for each doctrinal position taught in the class.

This course will focus on the design and fundamental study of biblical mandates of our Baptist Church Covenant.

This course is designed for understanding the philosophical and Christological approaches to Christian ethics. Students will engage in biblical principles for decision-making and conduct for living.

This class is designed for pastors, office workers, Christian Educators and others who want to utilize computer technology in the church. This course will cover the various types of computer software and hardware and methods that serve to enliven Christian education and worship. Students will be introduced to the various ways that social media i.e. Facebook, Twitter and Instagram can enhance the work of the ministry. This class will also include a demonstration of how to develop a technology ministry in the local church.

This course is designed to teach the basic steps in developing a program of evangelism. Students will discover the appropriate Scriptures to use, and the methods, techniques and media best suited for witnessing to nonbelievers.

This course will focus on helping the students to share their Christian faith using traditional methods and social media. It will highlight the challenges of the church’s ability to reach out to the inner city as well as rural areas. The course will also highlight the need to witness to cultural and ethically diverse groups of people.

This course is designed to help church leaders and youth workers develop a viable youth ministry. Students will discover ways to assess the needs of youth, plan and implement programs to address those needs and evaluate youth ministry programs.

The aim of this course is to comparatively view the place of the Christian in the context of society. Students will focus on biblical references that define the role of the church in terms of living in the world and interacting with those outside of the church. The separation of church and state will be discussed.

This course is designed to explore ways the church can minister to singles. This course will identify “issues” that interest Christian singles, as well as investigate ideas that will help to include singles in all church activities.

This course challenges the students to identify and confront contemporary issues. The students will look at issues that affect the church, home and community. They will be encouraged to think through practical solutions and approaches to immediate and emerging social and ecclesiological concerns.

This course is designed to teach the fundamental purpose, principles and power of prayer. It looks into

prayer as the channel of communication of the believer to the Father.

This course will focus on the Certificate of Progress Program writing requirements for Phase 2. Emphasis in this phase will be placed on the development of the skills necessary to complete the writing assignments. Skills that will be mastered range from the development of paragraph/topic sentences to thesis-driven essays.

This course will focus on the Certificate of Progress Program writing requirements for Phase 3. Emphasis will be placed on the writing of documented research and the development of other skills necessary to complete the writing assignments in this phase. Students will be introduced to the library and use of reference materials.

This course will identify the process and principles for writing speeches and delivering them in public. In addition to writing and speaking skills, the students will learn basic verbal and non-verbal communications skills that will enable them to effectively communicate with audiences of all sizes.

*=Persons who have completed Phase 1 of the COPP must complete this course and Creative Ways of Teaching in order to be eligible to teach COPP courses.

This course will focus on the various administrative and organizational skills needed to organize the Christian Education Department. Students will focus on structure, leadership and staffing needs for Christian Education.

This course is designed enable people to mature in their Christian walks. It will focus on a creative and dynamic approach to nurturing people from children to mature adults – to become better disciples of Jesus Christ. Students will discuss what it means to be Christians.

This course is designed to teach the values and the structure of the Vacation Bible School. This course

will also provide instruction on how to plan, set up and conduct Vacation Bible Schools. It will teach

how to develop a program and suggest curriculum materials and visual aids for the school.

This course is also designed to instruct the class in the proper and most productive way to conduct a choir practice, along with various techniques that will allow for an efficient and effective practice period.

Emphasis will be placed on the responsibility of each Christian to participate in the Christian education activities of the church.

This course is designed for Pastors, Deans, Sunday School Superintendents and Directors of Christian Education in obtaining helpful methods of teaching their staff the newest, most innovative methods of communication in the classroom setting.

This course is designed to instruct in the methods of teaching in the local church setting. It is designed to assist teachers in discovering new ways of teaching, such as learning behaviors and strategies of student learning and behavior. *= Persons who have completed Phase 1 of the COPP must complete this course and Public Speaking in

This course will examine the current trends, methodologies and practices in Christian Education to determine their validity and alliance with the Scriptures.

This afternoon “In Service “ training session is open to deans, instructors, congress presidents,

moderators and CLS staff personnel. Information covered includes the CLS Handbook, as well as

reviewing updated information from the Division of Christian Education Accredited and Credentials. It

will also cover how to properly complete school forms, and a review of the “What Not To Do”

information sheet from the DCEAC.

This course will seek to sharpen the preacher’s expository preaching skills. The students may look at such key research tools as the following: word studies, biblical language skills, computer research, and the use of other sources of historical and hermeneutical value. Expository preaching, as a valuable tool in the preacher’s skill set, is presented as a tool that will sharpen the preacher’s ability to research and preach a more effective expository sermon.

Young ministers will study practical matters as church administration, staff relationships, community leadership, ministerial ethics, work with congregational management and other professional issues not normally handled in a classroom setting. The students will review denominational structure and associational ministry. This seminar is designed to build confidence and skills that lead to more effective

ministry.

This course will place emphasis on evangelism in the community. Students will receive hands-on instruction about the most effective ways to witness to non-believers. Using Jesus and the apostles as models, the students will focus on recruiting, organizing and preparing members for street witnessing.

This course will analyze the basic structure of corporate worship, contemporary worship styles and

innovative ways for meeting the needs of traditional and contemporary constituents. Students will

survey the history of Christian worship – the biblical, theological and psychological roots of worship – as

well as the various means of congregational expressions in worship. Special attention will be given to

This course will serve as a general overview of the work of the church secretary/clerk. Basic functions of the secretary will be covered to familiarize the participants with the importance of this position as it relates to the interaction generated between the members and official church staff.

This course focuses on the art of clear communication between the church office. Pastors, church administrators, executive secretaries and church clerks are highly recommended to this important course.

This course is a survey of various religions. Students will study the basic tenets and principles of dominant religious practices in the world---yesterday and today.

This course is designed to identify Christian morals, using Scripture as the basis for moral behavior. The

course will challenge the believers to recognize immoral trends, fads and behavior. This study will use

the Sermon on the Mount as a guide.

Children will learn biblical examples and the importance of following God and making choices that express God’s plan for His followers.

This course will teach HOW, WHEN, WHERE, to whom and why we pray. The children will be led through the model of prayer, as well as role-play activities to enhance their conversation with God.

This course will examine the Christian character that God expects of His followers. The children will be empowered to stand for God even when that choice makes them the “odd man out”. The children will be reminded of the promises of God for those who walk in His way.

This course will explain the gift of salvation by utilizing the Book of Romans. As the children explore the Roman road, they will be empowered and enable to be a stronger witness/persuader of the Christian way through Jesus Christ.

This course will examine the basic beliefs of the Baptist faith. The children will be encouraged to

examine why we as Baptists do what we do, as well as show biblical proof that our doctrine is sound.
