DEAR MONOGRAM CLUB MEMBER,
As you know, choosing to attend the University of Notre Dame is more
than a four-year decision, it’s a lifetime decision. Therefore, in recognition
of the inherent value of having earned a Monogram from Our Lady’s
University, we are pleased to announce the establishment of a new
engagement strategy, which will be focused on the broadening of
services and support to all Monogram winners. In the coming months,
we will continue to evaluate our current practices and work to identify
opportunities where we can better serve you and your fellow Monogram
winners, while communicating more effectively as well.
In order to achieve our goal of deepening engagement, Monogram
member contributions will now be integrated into the Rockne Athletics
Fund. As a valued member of the Monogram Club, your contributions
will continue to provide you with unique access and exclusive benefits,
including the Monogram Club football ticket application. Please know
that through this integration we will continue to provide scholarship
support via the Brennan-Boland-Riehle Scholarship Fund and member
support through the Catastrophic Relief/Heaton Fund. As such,
Monogram Club members may contribute directly to these two funds,
which will benefit Monogram winners and their families in the same
fashion they have for many years.
The Monogram Club is a vibrant and important part of the Notre Dame
Athletics Department and will continue to dedicate its full attention to
delivering on the lifetime promise bestowed to Monogram winners.
As always, thanks for your continued support of the Monogram Club
and our current coaches and student-athletes.

Q&A WITH MONOGRAM CLUB PRESIDENTTerri Vitale (’94, ’95, tennis)
How has being a Notre Dame student-athlete and Monogram Club member impacted your life the most? “It has impacted me in every way
in my life. Every value that Notre Dame holds
dear is something that I hold dear to me and my
family. I was fortunate to meet my husband (Chris
Sforzo ’94), who is also a Monogram Club member
and earned his Monogram in lacrosse. My sister
(Sherri Vitale-Krug ’96) played tennis here and my
brother-in-law (Thomas Krug ’97) played football
here. The Notre Dame story and the student-
athlete experience is something that comes up
in conversation in our family all the time. We all
hold very close to our hearts the lessons that we
learned from our coaches, from our teammates,
from the struggles, successes and failures that we
experienced as a student-athlete. We were able
to take that entirety of the experience and use it
to propel ourselves forward into the careers that
we’ve chosen after Notre Dame.”
What motivated you to join the Monogram Club Board of Directors and then enter the presidential rotation? “I was attracted to the
Monogram Club as a way to stay connected to
the University. As a resident of Florida, I’m not
close to campus, so it was important for me to
find a way to stay connected to the University,
particularly to all the things I held dear as a
student-athlete. The Monogram Club was the
perfect vehicle to do so. I was fortunate that
(Notre Dame Senior Deputy Athletics Director)
Missy Conboy (’82, basketball) reached out to
me about exploring an opportunity that might
come available on the board. It was with her
encouragement that I did so and was really
able to learn firsthand all the great things the
Monogram Club board was doing. I really didn’t
have a great understanding of that previous
to my involvement. I was just coming back to
campus for football games and enjoying all the
pre-game activities in the Monogram Room. It
wasn’t until I joined the board that I could really
see all the incredible service and good work
the board is doing throughout the year that
sometimes isn’t apparent to its membership. As
I became more and more involved, it became a
passion. I really wanted to serve the University
and the current and former student-athletes.”
How can the Monogram Club best impact its diverse membership no matter the age, sport or location? “The Monogram Club is really mindful
of serving a diverse group of members, be it
geography, sport, age or profession. There are a
wide variety of ways for people to get involved.
There’s the Monogram Career Network, which
is a great resource for those wanting to explore
a profession in a certain field, and we can link
people up with mentors or just an opportunity to
shadow within an office environment. The Club
also has a relationship with the Stayer Center,
which is a great platform for someone to come
back if they’re considering a career change or
really want to propel themselves with some
executive leadership training. Those things are
great ways for someone to use the resources that
the Monogram Club offers.
“We also have things that are just fun and allow
people to come back and see people and friends
you haven’t seen in many years. A lot of times
it’s anchored around a football game and it’s
celebratory in nature and always a good time. We
have the post-game Mass, which is a wonderful
way for people to come together and celebrate
their faith. We also have many regional events
away from campus. Whether you’re coming back
to campus or the Club is hosting an event in your
area, we hope the Monogram Club can find a way
to be meaningful to its members.”

Speaking at the fall Monogram jacket ceremony
“Regardless of who you are, what
year you are in school, the Monogram
Club is here to help you. No matter
your walk of life or your major, we are
here because we care. We have gone
through some of the same things that
you are currently going through.”

MONOGRAM JACKET CEREMONIESThe Monogram Club presented 211 first-time
Monogram winners with their jackets at the
fall and spring Monogram jacket ceremonies.
Allen Greene (’99, baseball) was the featured
alumni speaker at the fall ceremony, while
Derrick Mayes (’96, football) addressed the
honorees at the spring event. The student-
athlete reflections were given by Mike O’Leary
(’20, hockey) and Paige Crowley (’18, women’s
soccer) in the fall and spring, respectively.
FOURTH QUARTER FAREWELL & GRADUATION STOLESThe Notre Dame Athletics Department hosted
the seventh annual Fourth Quarter Farewell
inside South Club at Notre Dame Stadium.
Graduation weekend is often a time for
goodbyes, but the Monogram Club wanted
to remind the over 200 athletics graduates
from Notre Dame’s Class of 2018 that their
connection with the Fighting Irish family
is just beginning.
The event provided a chance for athletics
graduates, their families, coaches and
administrators to gather before the rest of the
weekend swept them away in various directions.
“Now it’s our opportunity at the
Monogram Club to help nurture
your ambitions beyond Notre
Dame. There are so many ways the
Monogram Club can continue to do
that; there are wonderful ways to
help propel you to your goals. We
hope you lean on the Monogram
Club as a partner and as a way to
continue that lifetime commitment
that we have to you when you
chose to come to Notre Dame.” –Monogram Club President Terri Vitale (’94, ’95, tennis)speaking at Fourth Quarter Farewell
The Athletics Department continued on the
tradition of issuing commencement stoles to
student-athletes and student support staff as
a way to highlight the athletics community,
and all they have accomplished, during their
time at Notre Dame.

Nothing brings the
Notre Dame community
together like home
football weekends, and the
Monogram Club provided
many opportunities for
its members to gather on
campus throughout the
2017 season.
Schivarelli Football Players’ Lounge ReceptionsFootball and senior football manager Monogram
Club members had unique access to the
renovated Schivarelli Football Players’ Lounge
during the traditional Friday night receptions.
The new-look lounge features a permanent
bar, over a dozen TVs, comfortable seating and
men’s and women’s restrooms. Attendees also
had the opportunity to visit the renovated home
locker room, take a photo with the Play Like A
Champion Today sign, walk down the tunnel and
see the field.
Pre-Game ReceptionsEvery home football Saturday, Monogram Club
members filled the Monogram Room during the
Club’s pre-game reception.
The family-friendly
environment featured
food, drinks and a chance
to meet up with fellow
Club members and watch
games from around the
country. The highlight of
every reception was a visit
from the cheerleaders and
Leprechaun along with a
featured guest speaker,
which in 2017 included
former Fighting Irish
gridiron standouts Steve
Orsini ’78, Bob Crable ’82,
Tim Brown ’88, David
Bruton Jr. ’09 and
Matthias Farley ’15.
Post-Game MassesA special tradition for Monogram winners
is the post-game Mass inside the Monogram
Room following every home football game.
Rev. Mark Thesing, C.S.C. (’81, ’85, ’92, honorary),
chaplain for the Monogram Club and football
team, presided over every Mass during the 2017
season. The Mass provided a great way for Club
members, their families and guests to conclude
a wonderful weekend back on campus.
Pre-Game TunnelsFootball and senior football manager Monogram
Club members formed the pre-game tunnel
prior to the season opener against Temple. It
was a great opportunity for those members who
helped build the storied Fighting Irish program
to be on the field prior to the first game inside
the renovated Notre Dame Stadium.
All Monogram Club members were invited to
form the tunnel prior to the NC State game,
which took place during the Club’s Annual Mass,
Meeting and Reception Weekend.
HOME FOOTBALL WEEKENDS
7
ANNUAL MASS & RECEPTION WEEKENDThe Monogram Club held its Annual Mass,
Meeting and Reception during the weekend
of the Notre Dame-NC State football game
(Oct. 27-28). The festivities began with the
presentation of the Edward “Moose” Krause
Distinguished Service Award to U.S. Army Lt.
Gen. Bryan Fenton (’87, manager). More than
500 Monogram Club members and guests
attended the Annual Reception at Notre
Dame Stadium. The attendees enjoyed a great
atmosphere inside the renovated Schivarelli
Football Players’ Lounge and North Tunnel
concourse area.
The Club hosted its pre-game reception
inside the Monogram Room, and then Club
members formed the tunnel the Fighting
Irish ran through prior to the victory over
the Wolfpack. Following the game, the Club
held its Annual Mass and Meeting where
Terri Vitale (’94, ’95, tennis) began her term
as Monogram Club president. The Club also
welcomed three new directors: Ryan Harris
(’07, football), Ruth Riley (’01, ’16, basketball)
and Takashi Yoshii (’10, tennis).
FOOTBALL FANTASY CAMPThe Monogram Club and the football
program welcomed back nearly 20 football
Monogram winners in early June for the
Notre Dame Football Fantasy Camp. The
alums, who represented five different
decades of Fighting Irish football, served as
honorary coaches at practice throughout
the weeklong camp that culminated with
a game inside Notre Dame Stadium. The
camp provided a chance for the Monogram
winners to interact not only with the
campers, but also with fellow football
alumni and members of the current team.
Outgoing Monogram Club president
Kevin O’Connor (’89, lacrosse) and
incoming president Terri Vitale (’94,
’95, tennis) presented the American
flag prior to the NC State game.

“I could never repay this University.
It’s showed me so many things. It
certainly allowed me a chance to grow
and allowed me a chance to meet people
that are incredible role models, and
people that you’d want to emulate. I’ve
been fortunate to have an opportunity
to be part of this University, and I’ll
continue to do what I can to serve it.”

MOOSE KRAUSE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARDLt. Gen. Bryan Fenton (’87, manager) was the
2017 recipient of the Monogram Club’s Edward

(Afghanistan/Africa), Operation Iraqi Freedom
(Iraq) and Operation Odyssey Dawn (Libya).

who have demonstrated an unparalleled
commitment to the Notre Dame Athletics
Department and University.

administration at Notre Dame, including a
22-year stint as sports information director,
before retiring in 1995. As sports information

1977, 1988) and other monumental moments
for Fighting Irish athletics.

sidelines for 17 seasons before announcing
his retirement in December. During that time,
he amassed 216 victories, seven conference

MONOGRAM CAREER NETWORKThe Monogram Career Network (MCN) continued
to impact members during various stages of their
professional lives. The MCN held numerous events,
both on campus and regionally, in 2017-18 that
brought together many different eras of Monogram
winners for the common goal of delivering on
the lifetime promise bestowed upon Notre Dame
student-athletes.
• The MCN and Student Welfare & Development
hosted prep sessions prior to Notre Dame’s fall
and winter career fairs. Monogram alumni met with
student-athletes to cover important topics related
to networking and what to expect at the career fair.
Following the career fairs, student-athletes were
able to network with Monogram alumni who were
in town representing their respective companies at
exclusive events hosted by the MCN and Student
Welfare & Development.
• The MCN partnered with Student Welfare &
Development for “Life After Notre Dame” lunches
during select home football weekends. Monogram
alumni from various industries were matched up
with student-athletes and student support staff
pursuing opportunities in those same fields.
• The Monogram
Club’s board of
directors connected
with current student-
athletes and student
support staff during
its annual winter
board meeting.
• The MCN
partnered with
the football
program for “4
For 40” events
where members of the current team received
professional guidance from former players.
• The MCN held an event for the cheerleading squad
that allowed team members to gain professional
advice and insight from Monogram alumni.
• The MCN held summer events in Chicago
(pictured), New York and Detroit/Auburn Hills. The
receptions brought together Monogram alumni and
current student-athletes interning, training and/or
living in and around those cities.
• The MCN had a presence during the “Irish on
Wall Street” events in Chicago and New York.
• Numerous one-on-one interactions between
mentors and mentees were held throughout the
year. The talks covered topics such as internships,
