Salam Global Peace! As the chairman of the Global Peace Festival (GPF) Malaysia, I would like to extend my

utmost gratitude and appreciation to our partners, sponsors, supporters and staff in

expanding our peace-building initiatives throughout the year 2013. I would to highlight

the remarkable effort of hosting the Global Peace Convention in Kuala Lumpur, this

would not have happened without the undue support from the Global Peace Foundation

International, Department of National Unity and Integration (Prime Minister’s Department),

as well as generous support from the private sector and civil society.

Guided by the universal values and aspirations of “One Family Under God”, GPF Malaysia

has been at the forefront in promoting interfaith understanding, cultivating family values,

and fostering the culture of service among youths. Looking forward towards year 2014,

we hope that GPF Malaysia will continue advancing the spirit of peace and unity among

MIDNIGHT FOOTBALL

2013The Midnight Football is a youth development program for at-risk youth through character-building activities, futsal trainings and community engagement. It aims to motivate youth to aspire for better career and life.

I have never had such an experience before. This activities of Midnight Football has taught me the importance of teamwork. Without teamwork, I wouldn’t have made it. I want to thank my facilitator for helping me so much during my journey. Many times when I feel like giving up, I took on the challenge. I feel more confident now than ever! I’m so grateful because I’m a lot more responsible for others than I used to be.

I am very happy to finally see my son laughing and talking to others, it feels so good to see him change in a positive way.

But now, whenever I feel sad, I will de-stress myself by playing futsal and immersing myself with the feeling of winning, having the support from my teammates who would cheer me up! I mean something to my friends and teammates, so then why should I give up inlife that easily?

STORY OF TRANSFORMATION

Ever since my husband passed away, Naagiran wouldn’t talk much and he would often hide behind the camera when there is a photo taking.

Coming from a low-income family, I had low self-esteem and was a loner. I struggled a lot in school and in life. “I used to complain a lot on why things go wrong on me, and when I don’t find the right answer I tend to feel sad.”

Youths should be more alert and mindful instead

of falling blindly into the ‘dog eat dog world’.

They too should pause and ask themselves what

kind of contributions they have given back to

humanity.

The spirit of volunteerism and community outreach

is also a type of success and progress not merely

of having conditioned perceptions of success and

progress.

BACKGROUND

K E Y D I S C U S S I O N

The GPF Dialogue is an initiative to promote greater discussion pertaining issues that are important to Malaysians. The Dialogue encourages positive, dynamic discussion on critical national issues, providing long term solutions and impactful ideas. It is also a neutral platform for multi-pronged engagement with the government, private sectors, and civil societies. Key ideas and issues highlighted in the GPF Dialogue series are documented in an Outcome Report.

In moving forward, one should first re-look at the past and understand the nation’s complex history, especially at re-looking the country’s constituency on freedom and democracy.

The rise of political interest and awareness among the younger generation indicates that the youths have moved beyond communal and racial politics as they seek for higher aspirations for the nation such as integrity, justice, freedom, etc.

The government should place priority on improving the quality of Education for future’s betterment. Education should be about building the nation’s solidarity rather than merely being part of the global rat race.

Youths today are eager and ready for freedom, many young people are questioning the very system and leadership of the current political, economic and societal values. They are also challenging the repressive legal system put in place by those in power.

The internet has become a powerful channel for youths to express their freedom, hence an emerging ‘culture of thinking’ among youths is pushing society forward, moving beyond the clutches of race and religion.

Reforming the Education system is vital in nurturing a more vibrant and forward thinking youths. The current education system has been based on an obsolete 19th Century model that focuses heavily on examination, passive-learning and bureaucracy.

Parents, educators, scholars as well as the business community are seeking for a 21st Century holistic education that can fulfill the market and social needs of the future generation.

With the launch of the National Education Blueprint (NEB), one of its outcomes identifies the need for schools empowerment and transformation through teaching methods and systems that emphasis on collective-impact and cross-sectorial collaboration.

Schools should promote non-academic, experiential learning such as environmental sustainability and preservation, as well as nurturing core values such as compassion.

The Global Peace Convention (GPC) is a signature event organized by the Global Peace Foundation, which promotes an innovative, values-based approach to peace-building, guided by the vision that all human beings are members of One Family under God.

The GPC is an annual convening engaging leaders from the government, faith-based organizations and civil society to advance efforts for peace and development. It serves as a platform for the sharing of best practices and expertise, as well as developing innovative peace-building models.

The convening brings together many outstanding projects rooted in universal principles and values developed by committed individuals and organisations from all around the world. Significant grassroots and global partnerships are developed at the GPC to establish the foundations for lasting peace.

Global Peace Awards “Promoting the Culture of Peace”Malaysia is proud to have Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Najib Razak to receive the Global Peace Award for his administration’s effort at “Promoting the Culture of Peace”. The Award was a small token of acknowledgement by the Global Peace Foundation to Malaysia for its contribution as a peace mediator on the Mindanao Conflict between the Philippines Government and the people of Moro.
