Annual Report • Year End 2010

A Blueprint for Our Second Century of Caring

O N E H U N D R E D Y E A R S A G O ,

in 1910, many Jewish elderly faced an uncertain future.

These recent immigrants could not rely on Medicare,

Medicaid or Social Security. Fortunately, a small

group of concerned Jewish leaders took notice,

and worked to provide shelter for senior citizens in need,

in an environment founded on the Jewish values

of care, compassion, justice and learning.

As the number of those who needed long-term care grew,

so did the Hebrew Home. The year 2010 represented

a milestone in our organization’s history,

a time to celebrate our vibrant past and lay

the groundwork for a vital future.

Celebrating Our First Century

Thanks to Honorary Chairs for the Centennial Celebration, Clarice Smith and Arlene and Robert Kogod, and to the efforts of our Centennial Task Force, the Hebrew Home celebrated with all those who truly make us the organizationwe are today: a premier eldercare community serving 1,000 seniors daily.

As we still bask in the glow of the celebration

of our centennial, we are called to prepare for the

future – our second century of caring for the seniors

of Greater Washington.

A hallmark of our organization, from our humble

beginnings in a brick row house on M Street to the

large eldercare provider we have evolved into today,

has been our ability to grow, change and adapt with

the needs of our community, with a determination

to stay true to our Jewish values.

In the near term, our current plans touch every

level of care on our campus, and include:

• Development of a new memory support service

and residence here on our campus. The Cohen-

Rosen House, an 18-unit specialized Alzheimer’s

and dementia assisted living facility, will break

ground later this year.

• Significant renovations to our rehabilitation therapy

center. Thanks to the generosity of the Elsie and Marvin

Dekelboum Family Foundation, this initiative will

encompass state-of-the-art equipment, environment

and modalities for physical therapy, occupational therapy

and speech pathology services, as well as create an

extensive “daily activities” area to assist those returning

to their homes.

• Renovation of our post-acute nursing units and accommo-

dations for rehabilitation patients at the Hebrew Home.

• Apartment remodeling and modernization

at our Ring House community.

• Apartment and community space upgrades

at our Revitz House community.

In our goal to make life “more caring, more vital for

that one man, than one woman that one family,” we face

a myriad of challenges. For the longer term, the blueprint

for our second century will address shifting dynamics and

challenges such as:

• Changing demographics.

• Increasing influence of baby boomers.

• Governmental reimbursement challenges.

• A growing variety of senior care options.

• Emergence of new models of eldercare.

• Development of home and community-based services.

• A focus on person-centered, consumer-driven care.

• Providing wider geographic distribution for our services.

CHARLES E. SMITH

Charles E. Smith Life Communities takes its name from a visionary leader in the Washington Jewish community.

Charles E. Smith (1901-1995) was a persuasive philanthropist who generously supported the most vulnerable in our society. As president of the Hebrew Home from 1959–1962, he boldly

laid the groundwork for the Home’s 1969 move to its current Rockville campus.

Recognizing the need for continued philanthropic support and the emerging continuum of care on our campus, his son and son-in-law, Robert H. Smith and Robert P. Kogod,

and their families made an extraordinary $12 million investment in our future. Our name, adopted in May 2006, unites our entities,

sustains both the legacy and leadership of Charles E. Smith and honors the memory of a remarkable leader.

Comparing these two charts shows that nearly 70 percent of the nursing care provided at the

Hebrew Home is for residents on Medicaid, yet only about half the income received is from Medicaid

reimbursement. This gap creates the significant shortfall shown on our financial summary. It also

should be noted that Medicare payments support short-stay residents in our rehabilitation program,

where care is more costly due to the intensive therapy, medication and nursing they receive.

Aunt Minnie Goldsmith AwardMrs. Charles Goldsmith, who was born in 1871, opened her heart to all those in distress.

Lovingly known as “Aunt Minnie,” she took it upon herself to lead fundraising efforts

on behalf of the Hebrew Home and its elderly residents. Each spring, she celebrated

her birthday by inviting friends to a luncheon to raise funds for the Home. The Aunt

Minnie Luncheon, which draws hundreds of women, continues that tradition, and

the award in her name is presented annually “for idealistic service to humanity and

community welfare.”

• Unrestricted support for resident care: Annual support and other unrestricted

giving make it possible for us to serve the community’s elders.

• Support for facilities and programs: A portfolio of opportunities from $10,000+

will create a fresh new look in senior housing, enhance rehabilitation and

construct a new memory center.

• Endowment funding for a secure future: Legacy gifts provide an ongoing

stream of income and critical support for the long term.

What $30 Million in Donations Will Accomplish

Centennial Campaign

In December 2010, we publicly

announced our $30 million Centennial

Campaign. We congratulate and thank all

of the donors who have made generous

contributions to date. Last year, philanthropic

support for Charles E. Smith Life Communities

affirmed the strength and vitality of our 100

year relationship with the community we

serve. This support is needed and appreciated

more than ever, as we face the challenges

of a difficult economy, government

reimbursement shortfalls, rising costs,

facilities renovations and an increased need

for charity care.

Our Centennial Campaign lays the

foundation for our second century.

Our ambitious goal of $30 million will:

• Fund capital and programmatic initiatives

and provide for new construction and

improved facilities

• Strengthen our endowment for the future

• Provide unrestricted funds to meet the

growing need for charity care

We are pleased to announce that $22.7 million has

been raised to date, and we thank all of the donors who

have made generous contributions.

We wish in particular to acknowledge three families

whose extraordinary and transforming philanthropy sets

a shining example for our community. Thank you to:

• Judy and Richie Cohen, dedicated

supporters who made a decision to

honor their parents, long-time

Washington families, with a most

generous leadership gift to name the

planned Alzheimer’s Memory Center,

the Cohen-Rosen House.

• Audrey and Marc Solomon, who

are serving as Centennial Campaign

co-chairs and whose leadership gift,

a testament to their long-standing

devotion to the frail elderly, supports

all facets of this campaign.

• Irene and Edward Kaplan, who

individually and together have served

the Jewish community in numerous

capacities, and whose generous

leadership contribution establishes

an unrestricted endowment to meet

the needs at the Home.

Guardian Campaign

Since the founding of the Hebrew Home in 1910, we

have counted on the charitable support of the com-

munity to help us fulfill our mission to shelter and

care for the area’s elderly, regardless of their financial

status. For 52 years, the annual Guardian Campaign

has provided this critical unrestricted support.

Despite a challenging economic climate, a record

number of donors responded to the 2010 campaign

and gave $1,159,472 to help offset our deficit.

* Of Blessed Memory

Legacy Gifts – Builders of the FutureBuilders of the Future have taken steps today to guarantee their support of the Home will live beyond them.

They have created legacies that will be realized in the future through Bequests, Charitable Gift Annuities,

Remainder Trusts, Permanent Funds, or by naming the Hebrew Home as a beneficiary of a trust, IRA, or

insurance policy. Their planned gifts help us provide a continuum of care for frail elders and their families.

We welcomed new members at the Builders of the Future Society Luncheon on May 4, 2010.

We are grateful to the following individuals who have informed us that the Hebrew Home will be receiving

a gift from them or from their estates in the future.

Annual Report 2010 | 25

The Hebrew Home enters its second century of service with a permanent endowment strengthened by gifts

from generations of donors, including those who have established Permanent or Designated Funds. Named

Permanent Funds are created for many reasons: in memory of someone dear, in honor of a person or an

event, or for the comfort of providing Charles E. Smith Life Communities with needed financial support

for those with nowhere else to turn. These funds directly benefit those we serve through a wide variety

of programs or services that contribute to our “Margin of Excellence.”

The term “Permanent Fund” indicates the original gift creates an endowment from which earnings will be distributed.

A “Designated Fund” is totally expended for the specific purpose chosen by the donor. We owe all of the wonderful

donors who have created or donated to these funds a great debt of gratitude for their generosity and compassion.
