In 1971 a group of determined parents and community leaders in south-east Melbourne joined forces to start a school for children with a disability.

Working dynamically with people throughout the community, The Bridge has grown to provide social connectedness and meaningful work placements for people with a range of diverse needs.

Ever evolving, The Bridge continues to give hope, take action and successfully transform the lives of the people they support.

For over 40 years, we have been transforming livesOver 40 years, The Bridge has developed innovative ways to support people with a disability.

A school for children with a disability was established in 1974 and eight years later, Urimbirra Adult Day Training Centre was opened and soon afterward respite facilities were established.

In the 1990s, Urimbirra expanded its services, increasing the opportunities for people with a disability by including open and supported employment services and additional adult services in the south-east.

In 1995, Urimbirra joined forces with Westernport Adult Service Providers, and Options Victoria was realised. This created the opportunity to combine our open employment services, strengthening our reach of support, under the name of Paramount Personnel. This innovative venture resulted in a professional workforce focused on support for people seeking open employment opportunities.

In 2014 Options Victoria realigned all of its service names under one umbrella to become what you see today; The Bridge Incorporated, with key service streams; The Bridge Connects, The Bridge Employment and The Bridge Works.

Gaining momentum with each milestone, The Bridge continues to deliver high quality support to people with a disability, achieving whole of life independence and success.

On December 15, 2014, we had the pleasure of Senator the Hon Mitch Fifield, Assistant Minister for Social Services, officially launch our new services names and branding at a special event held at our supported employment service, The Bridge Works.

Transforming The Bridge Works warehouse into an auditorium catering for over 200 guests, with stage, 100 inch flat screen TV and 40 foot black velvet drapes was no small feat; however it all came together perfectly on the day.

The event was officiated by Jim Hall, The Bridge Board President and Phillip Toovey, CEO, with an audience of over 200 people, made up of people with disabilities, families, carers, staff, and support workers, State and Federal government department personnel, business representatives and members of the local community.

Dignitaries and VIPs in attendance included Cr Sean O’Reilly Mayor of the City of Greater Dandenong, Cr Roz Blades and John Bennie CEO City of Greater Dandenong, Cr Mick Morland Mayor of City of Casey, Cr Amanda Stapledon Deputy Mayor of Casey and Cr Geoff Gledhill Mayor of City of Kingston, as well as James O’Brien Victorian State Manager NDS.

Our generous and amazing guest speakers elevated our services with Kristian Harris from McCormick Foods and Rachel Taylor from Living Fundraisers speaking highly about our professionalism, commitment and down to earth friendly staff. Helen Mery, parent of Cassie, a supported employee at The Bridge Works, gave genuine and heartfelt thanks in her speech about Cassie’s journey and achievements as a supported employee with The Bridge Works.

Premiering Jono’s Story, a great short film about Jono, a supported employee and also a Getaways and Your Supports service user, left everyone feeling exhilarated. His positive nature; can do attitude and cheeky chuckle, told a great story of success and independence through collaborative efforts.

The celebration concluded with Senator the Hon Mitch Fifield joined on stage by The Bridge Works support employee, Giuseppe di Benedetto, unveiling The Bridge Works, The Bridge Connects and The Bridge Employment newly branded plaques, which are now proudly mounted on the walls of our Dandenong head office and at the key locations of our three core services.

The employment landscape continued to be challenging with increased competition, and changes to contractual requirements. This year saw the partial tender for the DMS contract with the Commonwealth Rehabilitation Services ceasing business, and a mid-term business relocation point for the ESS contract. We were successful in maintaining all of our ESS business, which was extremely positive. While we were unsuccessful with our DMS tender submission we still saw a significant increase in overall participant numbers.

The need to improve our performance, against the backdrop of tightening funding has been the main focus of our operations this year. We have seen an overall increase in the number of people finding work or education, with the strong emphasis on ensuring sustainable placements. While our contract performance still requires further improvements, the signs have been positive.

Within the 2014-15 FY there have been a number of staffing changes: including the appointment of Helen McKenzie as Operations Manager, Marie Hale as Employment and Partnerships Manager and we also welcomed 3 new Team Leaders – Haley Robinson, Bryn Roberts and Dave Fayolle.

This year saw some significant changes to the future direction of the DES program – with a National Taskforce set up to review the current program, and aid in the development of the program post 2018. The upcoming year will see further details emerge of how DES will interface with the rollout of the NDIS, and other employment programs. The relaxing of some of the rules surrounding joint program delivery offer new opportunities for The Bridge Employment to work in a holistic approach with our other services.

Throughout the upcoming year, our focus will be twofold: to remain committed to improving our performance within the current program and funding framework whilst being proactive to future developments of a potentially more integrated DES model.

This year saw 17 new customers contracting work with The Bridge Works, resulting in a 26% revenue increase with five of these customers providing ongoing assignments. Highlights of the past year have been the production and public launch of 2 short films with the involvement of The Bridge Works staff, supported employees and our valued customers. Both “Jono’s Story” and the “McCormick Relationship Campaign” showcase the valuable support, training and individual choice we provide universally as an organisation, integrating our services for our supported employees, as well as our professional quality of services for customers, adhering to quality assurance frameworks, production deadlines and overall customer experience.

Evidence reflecting our commitment to the continuous improvement in the quality of employment conditions for our supported employees, is highlighted in the 2015 external audit review conducted by Global Mark. The increased rate of supported employee participation, empowering inclusion, choice and skill development has continued, as in previous years; with the ongoing development of specialised jigs by our long-time volunteer jig maker Peter Smith, holistic support for supported employees, individually planning and on site supported employee led team meeting forums.

The implementation of transition to work program Next Step by The Bridge Connects, hosted at The Bridge Works, has experienced 100% growth, successful cross referral and realisation of work goals for existing participants. This growth confirms the need for supported pre-vocational training to overcome barriers to employment for people with a disability. The future already sees several Next Step participants registering with The Bridge Employment to realise their work plan goals, as well as our partnership with a Registered Training Organisation in the coming year, to deliver nationally recognised certification.

The past year has been an exciting one with ongoing preparation for NDIS and the opening of a new Cranbourne site, Stawell Street. Stawell Street, established in July 2014, provides a centrally located service, offering access to the newly developed Cranbourne shopping complex and local community.

With continued focus on individualised goals and independence, Connects has delivered quality outcomes in core living skills such as decision making, cooking, literacy, budgeting and the use of public transport. The results are evident with some participants now traveling independently to and from community houses to participate in study and other activities of their choice. We are seeing a direct impact on participant’s fine motor skills and mental and physical well-being through ongoing physiotherapy and physical activities in the community, with swimming, hydrotherapy, basketball and circuit classes at local gyms.

Our Volunteer Program continues to enhance the opportunities available to all participants within The Bridge Connects. New volunteer’s from a variety of backgrounds bringing with them a broad range of experience, talent and skills, has enabled Connects to broaden our activity offerings and foster new relationships in the community.

The year ahead is a year of challenge for Connects. In further preparation for the NDIS rollout in Victoria, all aspects of our operations and services are under review. The review will highlight the areas that need to become more efficient and cost effective so Connects can to continue to provide services within the NDIS pricing structure. Our challenge will be achieve this transformational change within the time limit set by the NDIS rollout as well as delivering high quality services for our participants. Our staff are committed to meet the challenge and are excited about the opportunities the NDIS will provide.

Every day is “Coffee, Cake and Horse” day

Anyone that knows Lynette, knows that each day she gets off the taxi at The Hub she will ask, “Coffee, cake, horse? “ with the anticipated response of staff saying ‘Yes, it’s horse riding day.’

Lynette joined The Bridge in 1992, after the closure of Caloola Institution, Sunbury.

Caloola commenced in 1864 as an Industrial School and later in 1962, was reformed as a training centre for the intellectually disabled, housing and supporting people with a disability. After its closure in 1992, Lynette and 2 participants moved to a purpose built DHHS house in Noble Park, where she still lives today.

When Lynette commenced with The Bridge, her behaviour was reflective of someone who had spent the majority of their life in an institution. Fiona Curran, Connects Area Manager remembers, “Lynette was in my original core group and I vividly remember the baby steps I had to take to even introduce her to making basic life choices. Choosing between tea and coffee was a difficult task for Lynette and she became overwhelmed.” “Lynette has a can do attitude, she is exceptionally considerate and compassionate, which is evident in the way she cares for others around her.” Fiona says.

At home Lynette is described by her housemates as the ‘mother hen’ and is always keen to help out.

Living each day to the fullest

Dani, an independent aspiring artist, with a generous heart and contagious smile

In January of 2009, Dani finished school and joined The Bridge Connects, Callander Road, with her chirpy and bubbly personality and willingness to give anything a go, Dani quickly formed many friendships with both participants and support staff.

In her time at Connects, Dani has blossomed into an enthusiastic actress, thoroughly enjoying the Fusion Theatre Drama group, which she attends with other Connects participants and her boyfriend Chris. Dani and Chris met at the drama group and both have a flair for the dramatic arts, performing in many productions together. “Drama has been the perfect outlet for Dani, as she loves being able to express herself in a creative manner.” Kim, Community Facilitator at Connects.

Last year Dani relocated to the newly refurbished Connects Douglas Street site and her level of independence has grown in the new surroundings. Now learning to travel on public transport with support from Connects staff, Dani uses her own Myki card and confidently negotiates her wheelchair with ease in the community.

Dani’s creativity shows in everything she does, with scrap booking and jewellery making, where she creates beautiful gifts for friends and family. One of Dani’s greatest joys is to sing. She has an incredible memory for lyrics and her favourite singers are Doris Day, Petula Clark, Mairead Nesbitt and The Seekers. One of Dani’s life goals is to perform karaoke to a live audience, sharing her creativity, acting prowess and fun loving character with others.

For over 16 years Lyn has dedicated her time and support

With the dedication of over sixteen years volunteering with The Bridge, Lyn Bates can definitely call herself part of the furniture!

Nowadays Lyn can be found at Douglas Street, holding the jewellery making activities, where participants can be creative, make gifts for friends and family, as well as refine their fine motor skills. Jewellery making along with the many other activities Lyn has run over the last 16 years have brought her a great sense of fulfilment and enjoyment.

“I started volunteering at The Bridge, when they were Options Victoria down at Callander Road” Lyn says “I had just retired from my office job after 20 years and wanted something useful to do, something that would get me out of the house and meeting new people.”

Living in the local area, Lyn applied for a volunteer opportunity with The Bridge and 16 and a half years later the rest is history. “I love it here, the staff and especially the guys are great.” Lyn says with a smile about the participants, “I’ve seen The Bridge go through so many changes and watched the clients grow up, it’s been really lovely.”

“I just love the people here.”

Since commencing with The Bridge Employment in 2013, Maria has succeeded in leaps and boundsWhen Maria registered with The Bridge Employment, she had already commenced her role at Spotlight, Sandown. To better enhance Maria’s work life, The Bridge Employment Consultants assisted Maria with on-the-job training and support with her problem solving abilities and overall confidence. This newfound confidence has secured Maria’s employment with Spotlight, with notable improvement in her work performance, particularly her speed in completing work tasks.

“Previously, I struggled with completing paperwork”, Maria says, however this is no longer a barrier, as Maria has built the confidence and knowledge to know her capabilities and navigate previously quite difficult tasks on her own.

Spotlight Store Manager, Simone Dix, is very supportive of Maria’s needs in the workplace. Spotlight are actively engaged with The Bridge Employment to implement flexible working arrangements to assist Maria in completing her tasks more efficiently and again build self-confidence. “I have a beautiful and caring employer” Maria says.

Simone, Maria’s manager, says “Maria is a valued member of her team who promotes cheerful customer service.” The Bridge Employment Consultants agree, “Maria has a bubbly personality, is a quick learner and a fun girl, which are great qualities in the workplace.”

Most recently, Maria has linked with the Your Supports service of The Bridge Connects, with the aim of increasing community involvement and providing opportunities to engage in leisure activities, like hip hop. “I like Hip-Hop music and maybe one day I might do Hip-Hop dancing”

Maria is steadily learning new tasks and feels her overall work performance, skills, self-confidence and work life has been made better with assistance from The Bridge.

Finding a pathway in which he could grow

Over the years Javed found himself in and out of jobs, unable to settle. He himself admits he had some growing up to do and never found a job that he truly felt he could stick with.

Commencing with The Bridge Employment in 2004, Javed alongside employment consultants worked tirelessly looking for the right fit. Although Javed was unsure of his future, he kept on trying, attending interviews, however never progressing into a role with a future.

The Bridge Employment didn’t give up on Javed either; they could see his potential and knew Javed had some maturing to do.

When an opportunity became available at Breadwinner, an employer with whom The Bridge Employment has successfully placed many jobseekers in the past, consultants had no hesitation in recommending Javed to them.

“It was 2010 and Javed had showed persistence and drive, but he just wasn’t finding the right job” consultants remember. On our recommendation Javed met with Ben, Manager at Breadwinner, for an interview and was offered a position in the stores department.

Now 5 years on, Javed is a qualified forklift driver and as his manager, Ben reports regularly that Javed is a key member of his team and he too commented on the change in Javed over the years, from a young man with little direction to one of the Breadwinner family.

Now married, Javed is looking forward to one day becoming a parent and continuing his future at Breadwinner. Choose a pathway

With a laugh and a smile, Kevin has found his ideal career

To say that Kevin loves his job is an understatement, “I get to work with the best team, clean carts, be outdoors… what more could I ask for?” he says with a beaming smile. Spending the afternoon with Kevin, asking him what he likes about his job and taking photographs for our Annual Report, was a great day out. Kevin is jovial, a bit of a character and loves a laugh; he is also focused, passionate and serious about his work.

Kevin started his job at the Settlers Run Golf Course in April 2015. As a Golf Attendant, he is responsible for the upkeep and cleanliness of all the carts, collection of golf balls from the greens and assists in the golf pro shop.

His colleagues and manager Steve, are extremely happy with Kevin’s work ethic and overall attitude. “Kevin does a great job and he really has a passion for his work” Steve says.

With the upcoming warmer months Kevin’s hours will increase as the golf range gets busier. This is a great achievement, as Kevin previously struggled settling in workplaces, “I’ve never worked somewhere with so much support. The boss helps me out with the carts if I get too busy.”

While Kevin has cerebral palsy and a mild intellectual disability, you would never know. His manners, communication, physical abilities and work ethic are impeccable. “Come on, don’t be scared…” he chuckles with our photographer, motioning towards the golf cart… “Let’s get in and take a ride.” His playful nature is very endearing, as he carries out his work with a grin and pride.

Kevin feels at home in his workplace, he feels valued and part of a supportive team. It just goes to show, if you can find a vocation that you enjoy and a team of co-workers who pitch in together, have a laugh and work hard together, you can thrive, no matter what.

Find a career that you love

In early September 2014 The Bridge Works received our first order to pack Aeroplane Jellies for McCormick Foods.

The McCormick and Works relationship was formed through innovative networking, with The Bridge Works Business and Development Manager, Wayne Broomhall, using his connections with previous colleagues to seek new business opportunities for The Bridge Works. “I was meeting with an old colleague to see if he had any need for our business, unfortunately, he didn’t but he had a good lead for me and gave me his wife, Karen’s, contact details, who works in marketing at McCormick Foods.”

“I emailed Karen with details about The Bridge Works and what we offer. Karen in-turn sent my details to Kristian Harris, the Co-Packer Planner at McCormick.”

Kristian was quick to visit The Bridge Works and gain insight into our capabilities. Impressed with our commitment and enthusiasm, McCormick presented Works with the opportunity to pack Aeroplane Jellies. “This was a fantastic opportunity, and I vividly recall staff and supported employees singing the Aeroplane Jelly song.” Wayne says.

The Bridge Works initiated all the requirements immediately, and were in a position to do our first McCormick Foods Aeroplane Jelly job in late September 2014.

We have subsequently received 20 orders to pack the jellies, an average of 2 orders a month.

Becoming a regular face and a staunch advocate for The Bridge Works, our service quality, our professionalism and our people, Kristian gladly accepted an invitation to speak at the launch event in mid-December for our new service names and branding, officiated by Senator the Hon Mitch Fifield.

Recently McCormick Foods supported The Bridge Works in our video campaign, promoting our services and our people. Kristian was pleased to accept the invitation and spoke very highly of our work and business relationship.

Nicole, achieving the right balance in work and leisure

When Nicole started at The Bridge Connects in 2009, she expressed the desire to make new friends, get involved in fun activities and also gain the skills to get a job.

Always busy and ever determined, Nicole has sourced ongoing volunteer work with Casey Aged Care Centre and in 2011 completed Certificate 3 in Aged Care. Nicole has been an active participant in the VALID Self Advocacy group during 2010 and in the same year completed work experience at Safeway in Fountain Gate.

Living at home with her parents, who support and encourage Nicole’s goals and independence every step of the way, not only has Nicole achieved the above, but she also also competed a basic food handlers course, Cert 1 First Aid and is a pivotal member of the National Disability Bowling Team, and she competed this year at the 27th National Disability Championship in Queensland and has her eye on the big prize, the Victorian Cup, in the 2016 Nationals being held in Melbourne.

Back in 2009, Nicole lacked the confidence to speak up, travel independently and make decisions without support, however 7 years on, she is travelling independently to Connects in Clyde Road Berwick 3 days per week and with the some support from dad, Christian, Nicole is now travelling independently to Dandenong and attending The Bridge Works Next Step.

Next Step has further developed Nicole’s practical work skills, helping her to quickly realise her goals for attaining employment. Additional support to build her confidence to speak up in a work environment, comprehend workplace policies and procedures, prepare her resume, attend to front of house reception and transfer calls and now, learn to drive.

Gaining the right skills to achieve independence

Cassandra, a natural born leader in her own right

For some, spring is about getting back outdoors, taking weekends away and planning for summer trips, for Cassandra, it signifies the start of product testing for one of our valued customers, Living Fundraisers.

Cassandra diligently plants and cares for the plant products provided by Living Fundraisers, she tests their durability with diligence and then records her observations providing data to Living Fundraisers informing on the quality of their products.

The information gathered by Cassandra, assists Living Fundraiser’s liaison with their suppliers, to ensure production of the highest quality products.

Diagnosed with Autism, Cassandra attended Springvale Park Special Developmental School and in 2012 completed work experience at The Bridge Works, where she discovered her flair in quality assurance systems. In 2013, after completing her schooling, Cassandra started her career by joining the supported employment team at The Bridge Works.

Cassandra has always excelled with numbers, fixating on routine and at times her diagnosis can affect her social and communication skills, but to meet Cassandra, you would never know this. Cassandra, may not be all that talkative, but she will always greet you with a smile and will definitely not shy away from a challenge.

The staff at The Bridge Works promote and support Cassandra to practice her social interactions as part of her everyday work routine, assisting her to develop new work skills, adjust and cope with changes in routine, decision making and overall confidence.

Cassandra’s inherent skills and others she has further developed over the years, have not only given her the ability to meet deadlines, create reports, and be a hard-working team member, but also contributed to the development of her social life, interactions with others, even as far as public speaking and increasing her flexibility in routine to take advantage of further learning opportunities.

President and CEO report

Each year is an opportunity to evolve, adapt and improve the way we meet the needs of the people we serve.

This year we took even more steps to strengthen our identity, our services and our future.

Last year heralded the launch of the organisation’s new name, The Bridge. The Board has been delighted with the extremely positive impact of the rebrand and the same can be said for this year’s rollout of the associated service names and brands, with all new websites, communication material, including videos, and signage at all sites.

The aim to create a more coherent presentation of who we are and what we do to the outside world, has certainly been accomplished. Additionally, the new names and brands have instilled a greater sense of unity within the organisation, which is a very pleasing.

These positive changes were all capped off with a wonderful launch event in December, involving Assistant Minister for Social Services, Senator the Hon. Mitch Fifield. It was a great success, with well over 200 people attending the event, held at The Bridge Works, our supported employment service.

In regard to finances, the year has again been very challenging, with tight operational funding and this condition will no doubt persist in the lead up to the implementation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

However, changes made during the year have improved our situation and plans in place for the coming year will improve our ability to manage these financial difficulties. The Board has also resourced a fundraising role to enhance our service activities and increase revenue.

Our changing landscape: The NDIS has been operating in a trial sites for several years now, with reportedly many good outcomes for scheme participants. However, the experience of service providers is still mixed, with a key concern being that funding rates are not sufficient to sustain certain support service streams.

The national transition for full rollout to the NDIS has now been announced, with the area we principally operate in, Southern Melbourne, set to transition to the new scheme from September 2018.

In other industry matters, the Federal Government announced a root and branch review of the Disability Employment Services (DES) program. We congratulate Minister Fifield for this bold initiative, as the current DES program has inherent flaws which are not conducive to optimising the participation of people with a disability in work. Reform is needed to better align employment assistance with the NDIS.

In contrast, continuing machinations relating to wage assessment measures for supported employees have caused the supported employment sector to remain in a state of insecurity, with again no clear sign of this matter reaching a point of conclusion.

Service highlights: To name a few highlights from the year, The Bridge Connects opened its new modern facility in Cranbourne for day services, and the redeveloped transition to work program, Next Step, which operates from The Bridge Works, has had a very positive start.

The business arm of our supported employment, The Bridge Works, had a stronger year, with new customers and higher levels of work.

Pleasingly a government contract business reallocation process resulted in The Bridge Employment successfully retaining its existing business levels, and changes to the staffing structure resulted in positive outcomes, rounded off with a solid financial performance for the year.

On key staffing matters, we welcome Eveline Beaumont who has been appointed to the position of General Manager with The Bridge Connects.

Working to standard: The annual independent review of our employment services, The Bridge Employment and The Bridge Works, resulted in them maintaining accreditation under the National Standards for Disability Services. Yet again the auditors noted that elements of The Bridge Works services were of exceptional quality.

Our Board: Following last year’s annual general meeting, an election of Office Bearers took place and Jim Hall was elected President, Helena Higginbottom elected Vice President and Sue Banks elected Treasurer.

We must note with great sadness the passing of Board member Vicki Smith. Vicki was a terrific contributor with a positive ‘can do’ approach in her role with The Bridge as well as life. She is deeply missed by all of us.

Page 29: Annual Report - The Bridge Inc.€¦ · Welcome to The Bridge 2015 Annual Report. This document is a snapshot of our services and activities during the 2014-15 financial year. This

29

We also acknowledge the recent passing of Brian Ahearne, our past long serving Treasurer. Tributes to both people are featured on other pages of this report.

Much work has been undertaken at a Committee level, being the Audit & Risk and Finance Committees. Our thanks go to all Directors for their contributions.

The Board is acutely aware of the need for the organisation to be fit and ready to operate in the new world of the NDIS and will continue to support the changes required to achieve this.

Looking ahead: In the coming year the focus will continue on strengthening and promoting our services. To be competitive we need to be highly efficient, maximising the level of resources for delivery of quality services. Key to this is being efficient and effective in all aspects of operations and administration, thereby improving the financial viability of our services. Work will also continue on the best use of our Noble Park property.

We will continue to foster internal integration and collaboration, so our services can respond in a more holistic manner. Overall, we must aim to offer people not just what they need, but also what they want, to lead a fulfilling life.

Our achievements to date are due to the efforts of many people and the valuable relationships we have with community groups; local, state and federal governments; businesses and employers; and so many others who support our cause; including the people who use our services, their families and carers.

Jim Hall President

Phillip Toovey Chief Executive Officer

To the management group, staff and volunteers – your good work is very much appreciated.

We draw on our past to inspire us and are guided by our mission, vision and values in all that we do.

Tribute to Vicki Smith

Vicki Smith joined the Board of The Bridge in 2013.

Vicki was a strong, bright and spirited woman, with a great sense of humour and humanity, coupled with a range of valuable skills and experience that made her a terrific contributor to the Board, including as a member of the Finance Committee.

Her son, Matt, who has a mild intellectual disability, has been involved in our recreation and respite services and is a supported employee with Wallara.

Last year, during all the complicated issues regarding wage setting, affecting supported employment nation-wide, Vicki approached

The Bridge CEO, Phillip Toovey, asking where parents could have a voice to help increase awareness of the importance that work plays in the lives of people like her son and their families.

With assistance from peak body, National Disability Services (NDS), Vicki’s initiative lead to the start of the ‘ADE Works for Me’ campaign, with its own website and many supporters.

Despite becoming seriously unwell, Vicki was closely involved in helping NDS drive the campaign, doing media interviews and meetings with Government, including Federal Assistant Minister for Social Services, Senator the Hon Mitch Fifield.

Vicki also continued her work on the Board of The Bridge, until the latter part of 2014, when her health significantly deteriorated.

Vicki passed away in February 2015 from the cancer she had been battling for over a year. She was 57 years old.

Vicki was a terrific person, who made a big impression on anyone that knew her and she is sadly missed.

Tribute to Brian Ahearne

Brian Ahearne’s involvement with The Bridge commenced when his son Malcolm was involved in our original school, then with our adult services.

Brian’s voluntary work involvement spanned three decades, starting in the early 1990’s when the organisation initiated an open employment program. For several years, Brian was a member of the Sub-Committee that oversaw this pilot program, including the period in May 1993 when we successfully obtained recurrent Government funding for what is today, The Bridge Employment.

In 1994 Brian nominated for a position on our Committee of Management, where he soon took up the role of honourary Treasurer.

Around year 2000, Brian, his wife Meralyn and son Malcolm, moved from Melbourne to the country town of Mirboo North, in West Gippsland. Brian remained committed to his connection with The Bridge and continued his role on the Board.

Brian consistently demonstrated a willingness to be involved, never shirking demands and always concerned to put the organisation first. As Treasurer, he applied himself to the fiduciary responsibilities with a high level of commitment and diligence.

He performed the role of Treasurer for 20 years and his substantial service was acknowledged upon his retirement at our 2013 AGM.

Brian’s integrity and dedication was undeniable and he always took his work seriously, but with an underlying genial manner.

The Bridge benefited greatly from Brian’s dedicated and substantial service.

Brian passed away in August 2015. He was 82 years old.

He was a very good man, who lead a good life and will be remembered with fondness and respect by the many people who got to know him.

• Employment income increased by 7% or $432,000mostly due to the large number of job seekers referred toThe Bridge Employment offices as a result of the closure ofthe Commonwealth Rehabilitation Service and increasein employment outcomes, coupled with strong and costeffective management strategies put in place to dealwith inflow.

• Connects had a growth of 7% or $305,000 in DHHS fundingof which approximately 2% or $80,000 was attributed tothe annual indexation. Connects continued to experienceinadequacy in funding and struggled to fund the increasein running costs including support staff salaries of 18%or $699,000 necessary to maintain the level of expenditurerequired to deliver effective services.

Financial Overview

Investment properties – The Bridge investment properties located at Callander Road, Noble Park and Thomas Street, Dandenong, were revalued by an independent valuer as at 30 June 2015, in accordance with the Australian Accounting Standards, at $3,680,000; an increase of $425,000 in value over the previous financial year’s valuation.
