ANNUAL REPORT 20151

In addition to facing challenges head on, 2015 was also a year of change. In September, Greater Delaware Valley Chapter President Tami Caesar was named the Chief Financial Officer of the National MS Society. After an extensive search, it was announced on January 15, 2016 that I would be the next president of our chapter. I am thrilled to take on this new role and look forward to working with all of you in this capacity. When I began my tenure with the National MS Society in 2005, there were only five disease-modifying therapies for MS. Now, there are thirteen. We’ve come so far, and it is important that we continue to accelerate the pace of MS research while providing the support necessary for local people affected by MS to live their best lives.

As president, I am committed to our shared vision of a world free of MS, and helping people living with MS move their lives forward. The Society has an incredibly strong history in our area, and I’m honored to be in a position to build on that foundation.

I want to sincerely thank everyone who took time during the year to participate in an event, fundraise, advocate for change, volunteer and donate. We are united in our collective power to do something about MS now and end this disease forever.

A YEAR IN REVIEW“Together we are stronger” is the theme for the 2015 Annual Report. This idea, that together, we can overcome the challenges of MS, is something that we strive to achieve every day. Thanks to the strength and dedication of our community, 2015 was a year to remember.

Through our comprehensive nationwide network of services, the Society devoted $122.2 million to connect more than one million individuals to the people, information and resources they need. To move closer to a world free of MS, the Society also invested $54 million to support more than 380 new and ongoing research projects around the world. These investments are critical in bringing us all closer to a world free of MS.

There were also some challenges in 2015. Our biggest fundraiser, Bike MS: City to Shore Ride, was cancelled due to a State of Emergency in New Jersey and the effects of Hurricane Joaquin. It was during this difficult time that I saw just how strong we can be when facing adversity. Despite the cancellation, we still raised $5.7 million, a truly remarkable feat. Staff, leadership and volunteers acted quickly and effectively, and the outpouring of support from our cyclists was incredible.

TOGETHER WE’RE STRONGER KEVIN MOFFITT, PRESIDENT

Sincerely,

Kevin Moffitt

ANNUAL REPORT 20155

RESEARCH

Here is a brief summary of significant 2015 research progress and initiatives:

STOPPING MS ▶ Positive results were reported from three phase 3

trials of an experimental therapy called ocrelizumab (Genentech, a member of the Roche Group), showing positive impacts in relapsing MS and, for the first time in a large-scale trial, a modest impact in primary progressive MS.

▶ The first generic version of daily Copaxone® (glatiramer acetate), branded “Glatopa” (by Sandoz, a Novartis company, developed in collaboration with Momenta Pharmaceuticals), was approved by the FDA and distribution began by Sandoz in June. Additional generics of this therapy are expected soon.

In 2015 the Society invested over $53 million in 380 new and ongoing research projects and initiatives. Locally, we contributed more than $4 million dollars of that total. We are making a difference – we are accelerating research breakthroughs that will change lives and, one day, end MS forever.

RESTORE AND REPAIR ▶ Promising results were reported from a phase 2 clinical

trial of the leading myelin repair strategy called anti-LINGO (Biogen). The agent was given by monthly IV infusion for 20 weeks to 82 people who had a first episode of optic neuritis (which often precedes a confirmed diagnosis of MS). Those given anti-LINGO had faster nerve signals – thought to be an indicator of myelin repair – along the optic nerve compared to those on placebo.

▶ The Society convened experts in October to help establish priorities in wellness research related to diet, physical activity and emotional health, as part of the larger Wellness Initiative.

ENDING MS FOREVER ▶ Researchers at McGill University reported that people

with gene variations linked to low vitamin D had double the chance of getting MS, confirming previous links between vitamin D and the risk of MS. Trials are underway to determine whether taking vitamin D supplements can help treat MS in people who already have the disease.

▶ Australian researchers reported that previous infection with Helicobacter pylori (which has been linked to stomach ulcers) was associated with a lower risk of developing MS in women, and less severe disability among those women who developed the disease. More research is needed to determine if this association means that H. pylori itself can trigger MS.

Please visit our website for even more research updates from last year.

ANNUAL REPORT 20159

ADVOCACY ▶ Staff and volunteer activists held meetings with 17

members of Congress and their staff on Capitol Hill in March. Activists discussed our federal priorities including: increasing MS research funding, Ensuring Access to Complex Rehab Technology Act (H.R 1516/ S. 1013) and the Advancing Research for Neurological Diseases Act (H.R. 292/S.849).

▶ In August, activists held 7 meetings with members of Congress in their district offices to further discuss our federal priorities.

▶ The 21st Century Cures Act (H.R. 6) passed in the House of Representatives in July. This bill includes three MS priorities: establishing a data collection system to identify risk factors for MS, increasing resources for the National Institutes of Health and U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and better incorporating patient perspectives into drug development and review.

▶ In July, we hosted our first annual “New Jersey Activist Week”. During this week activists from across the state met or contacted their state legislators to advocate for increased health care transparency, expanded access to accessible doctor’s offices and medication synchronization programs.

▶ We successfully advocated for the passage of Medication Synchronization legislation in New Jersey which will allow multiple prescriptions to be refilled on the same date, thus eliminating or reducing the stress of unnecessary trips to the pharmacy.

▶ Supported increased transparency of health care coverage and cost and advocated to make doctor’s offices more accessible in New Jersey

▶ We worked continuously to develop relationships and educate our state legislators. The MS Caucus in the Pennsylvania House has nearly 30 members and is a bi-partisan caucus that is focused on providing education and resources to legislators and developing strategies to address the issues facing Pennsylvania residents impacted by MS.

▶ Worked with several committees and councils on the language for accessible parking legislation (HB 200) which was introduced to the Delaware Legislature in June, 2015.

VOLUNTEERS ▶ Our volunteer program grew as 3,800 individuals

assisted in our fundraising events and 380 volunteered on committees, as self-help group leaders, as activists, at our office, warehouse and on special projects

▶ The chapter’s intern program had 52 undergraduate and graduate-level college students working alongside our staff in every department, gaining valuable work experience and supporting chapter initiatives

▶ Members of the MS Leaders Circle along with over 75 family and friends volunteered as part of MS Service Day, helping 10 in Lehigh and Northampton counties living with MS with a variety of household and yard tasks

Youth groups like the National Honor Society, Key Club, Jr. ROTC, fraternities, sororities and other service clubs helped set up and clean up at events, assembled mailings and rider numbers for Bike MS and brought youthful energy and enthusiasm to their assignments
