Dear Volunteers and Friends of Girl Scouts:Today, 2.3 million American girls can say, “I am a Girl Scout.” In their troops, at camp, selling cookies and attending our programs, they are creating wonderful memories and gaining important leadership skills just as millions of women did before them.

It speaks volumes about the impact of our work that Girl Scout alumnae comprise 53 percent of all women business owners. Among women in the United States Senate, 59 percent are former Girl Scouts, and in the House of Representatives, it’s 60 percent. Approximately one in every two adult women in the U.S. has at some point been a member of Girl Scouts.

Now in our second century, Girl Scouting remains as vital a part of girls’ lives as ever. This is a time of great opportunity, but also significant challenge. Those of us leading the council or serving as volunteers with girls are mindful of the responsibility resting on our shoulders to sustain the organization’s core values and protect

its mission. At the same time, we must ensure that today’s girls receive a meaningful leadership experience as Girl Scouts. We take our inspiration from Juliette Gordon Low, from the women who led our troops when we were girl members, and from each other.

During the last fiscal year, we implemented a new membership recruitment campaign based on research conducted by GSUSA. The “I can’t wait to” campaign updated our look, helping us reach more girls with a fresh message of empowerment and fun. We also participated in the first-ever National Girl Scout Cookie Day, which garnered significant national media attention showcasing the importance of the cookie sale as a leadership program for girls. It was a great year for our council, and we are pleased to share some highlights in this Annual Report.

Girls want to lead, to discover who they are, to connect with others and to take action to improve the world. Because of your support of our work, more girls are leaders. Because of you, nearly 40,000 girls in eastern Massachusetts can say “I am a Girl Scout.” Thank you for making a difference!

Yours in Girl Scouting,

Pamela Salkovitz Elizabeth Stevenson Interim Chief Executive Officer Council President/Board Chair

Thank You to Our Supporters!Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts is grateful to the individuals, corporations, foundations and community partners recognized in this honor roll of donors. This listing reflects all cash gifts, pledge payments and in-kind donations of $500 and above recorded during fiscal year 2012 (October 1, 2012- September 30, 2013). Together we raised more than $1.6 million to support Girl Scout programs, camps, troops and other activities throughout 178 communities.

In 2012, as part of the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts, we created annual and cumulative giving societies to recognize individuals who have made Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts a philanthropic priority. The 1912 Giving Circle was created to honor those who made gifts of $1,912 or more during the fiscal year. Members are highlighted in bold.

Donors whose cumulative gifts have surpassed $10,000 during a five-year period are members of the Trefoil Society. The Pearl Society recognizes individuals who consistently renew their commitment to our council by making gifts of any amount in the last three consecutive fiscal years.

Our Cadette troop has been together since the girls were Brownies. It has been a rewarding experience to guide and mentor the girls and help them develop the skills and confidence to accomplish their goals. It has also been a lot of fun to share in their excitement as they experience new things!

Last year, at a Bronze Award planning meeting, the troop explored different areas of the community that needed help. They listed various ways they could make a positive contribution and brainstormed how to accomplish their goals. All the girls are big animal lovers, so helping the Quincy Animal Shelter was at the top of everyone’s list. The girls felt that by taking action, they could really make a difference. They worked together to make posters and flyers to spread the word on what the animal shelter needed and collected donations of supplies. Some learned how to crochet and made blankets for the animals.

As part of their aMuse Journey, and in keeping with their animal theme, the troop illustrated and authored a book, Animals in Ostrishishishier, which focused on stereotypes. They shared this book with a Daisy troop, along with a scrapbook they had made, and discussed their Journey and Bronze Award work.

I was very impressed with the troop members’ passion to help the animal shelter and with their dedication to fulfill their goals. They worked equally hard on their project and cooperated well with each other. As one girl said, “I learned that by teaming together with my troop members, we could come up with a good plan on how to help the animal shelter. By working together we could accomplish more than by working alone.”

Mary Ann Mannion, Troop Leader Fiona McGarry, Assistant Leader Troop 74125

I am a championWhen asked why I support Girl Scouts, these questions immediately came to mind: What are my favorite things? Adventures, campfires and cookies.

Who are my favorite people? Juliette Gordon Low, Helen Storrow and all Girl Scouts.

I strongly believe in our Girl Scout Promise and Law, but more importantly, I advocate for the many benefits of Girl Scouts. For me, it’s the chance to meet and work with “sisters” from around the world, the fun of learning a new activity and the opportunity to provide service.

I have been fortunate to be involved in the Girl Scout Museum at Cedar Hill for over 30 years. I have learned to appreciate our history and those fabulous Girl Scout leaders who came before us and laid the groundwork to carry on the important mission of Girl Scouts.

Helen Storrow, our own Boston Girl Scout leader, was able to acquire the wonderful 76 acres of property now known as Camp Cedar Hill in Waltham from the Warren Estate. How lucky we are she had the insight to leave a legacy for today’s Girl Scouts!

I am so glad Girl Scouts is here for my granddaughters, providing leadership opportunities along with the fun!

My Gold Award-earning granddaughter Loren credits Girl Scouts for her college scholarship. Lindsey just earned her Silver Award and loves to travel, and Abby is working on her camping and cookie-selling skills. I support Girl Scouts for my girls, your girls and for all the girls and young women of our world.

E ight-year-old Alice, who had recently joined a Brownie troop in her town, begged her parents to let her attend Girl Scout summer camp. Her mother, however, had concerns. Alice has a condition that prevents her from regulating her body temperature, making participation in outdoor activities risky. Her mother finally agreed—if she could accompany her.

On the first day, Alice got on the camp bus and moved to the back where her wheelchair could be secured. The other girls instinctively got up and joined her. Each day they sat together and, after arriving at camp, all waited for Alice at the back door so they could go to flag as a group.

Her mother watched Alice join her new friends in swimming, crafts, field games, outdoor cooking and other camp activities. One day at the pond, the camp director noticed Alice’s mother crying as Alice canoed with two girls. When asked what was wrong, she explained it was the first time her daughter had ever participated in an activity without a parent by her side. For once Alice had the opportunity “to be a regular kid,” she said, overcome with emotion. Thanks to Girl Scouting and the girls and staff at camp, her daughter was having “the experience of a lifetime!”

Alice had a great time at camp and made many friends. She can’t wait to return this summer and is hoping to convince her parents to let her go for seven weeks!

More than 200 Girl Scouts in our council sold at least 500 packages of cookies last year, earning a spot in the “500 Club.” Our top seller, Samantha Dorgan, sold a remarkable 3,100 packages, and Quincy had the most 500 Club members, with 18. Congratulations, girls. Great work!
