The mission of the Urban Land Institute is to provide leadership in the

responsible use of land and in creating and sustaining thriving communities

worldwide.

ULI Triangle is approximately 510 members strong. Our District Council

offers abundant opportunities to get involved, get educated, and meet other

professionals in the real estate industry. We host monthly programs on

relevant land use topics, and provide our members opportunities to better

their community through outreach and education.

MESSAGE FROM THE ULI TRIANGLE CHAIRULI Triangle had a successful year in FY2015 creating many opportunities for our members to connect, learn and impact our community through their leadership.

This past year, I’ve had the privilege to serve as the Triangle District Council Chair and have marveled at the dedication and energy of our volunteer members. Our members commit a substantial amount of their time and are passionate about the ULI mission of making our region a thriving community. The Triangle is a growing and dynamic area, and ULI Triangle continues to bring together the vision and leadership of its members to address the most important topics facing our region.

I am pleased to share some highlights from their efforts this past year:

• Increased Community Impact > In May 2014, ULI Triangle brought transit consultant Jarrett Walker to Wake County to discuss a new transit paradigm. ULI’s leadership in facilitating the transit discussion had a direct impact on Wake County reevaluating its Transit Plan. Through our forum, Walker was introduced to our community and ultimately became the lead consultant engaged by Wake County to refresh the Wake County Transit Plan. In June, we hosted a second transit and land use program with experts from around the country to share their experiences and research with the Triangle, further fostering informed conversations around transit.

• Increased Engagement > ULI Triangle launched the J.W. Willie York Awards in September 2014 to celebrate individuals and companies who have made outstanding contributions to the creation and continued vitality of thriving communities in the Triangle Region. We named the awards after J.W. Willie York to honor his legacy as a community leader, Raleigh developer, early ULI member and ULI Chair. It was a very successful inaugural event which will become part of our regular offerings going forward.

• Increased Content & Collaboration > In addition to a Spring Forum and our signature Emerging Trends program, ULI Triangle hosted eight members-only roundtable events, representing more than 104,000 hours of member engagement and participation!

• Increased Regional Collaboration > We continued to partner with our neighboring district councils, ULI Charlotte and South Carolina, to host our second annual Carolinas Meeting in Charleston. In addition, Regional Initiative Councils comprised of mid to senior-level executives met twice to share best practices from their areas and projects.

• Increased Membership & Sponsorship > The ULI brand in our market has been significantly enhanced through the growth in engagement by our members. Thus, it should come as no surprise that our membership has increased 18% surpassing the 500 member mark! This success has led to a 39% growth in sponsorship support, allowing us to increase the district council’s capacity and bring in outside experts who have shared lessons learned from their regions on how to create more urban, walkable and unique places.

Those are just some highlights from the last fiscal year and I couldn’t be more excited about what’s coming up in FY16! We’ll be hosting the third annual Carolinas Meeting and expect to raise the bar above the very successful Charleston meeting held this past year. The second J.W. Willie York Awards are already shaping up to be a wonderful celebration of cutting edge projects and impactful people. We will also be giving back to our community by tackling specific land use challenges in our region through our Technical Assistance Panel program. At this stage, FY16 looks to be our most impactful and robust year ever as a District Council.

WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP INITIATIVE (WLI)WLI kicked off its second year with a full program of work including women-only receptions, leadership talks, and WLI-hosted events for the broader membership.

Outcomes: • Increased the visibility and participation of women in ULI

Triangle. • Women members increased by 26 percent over one year

compared to 18 percent growth in all membership. • The number of women speakers for all programs increased

from nine in FY14 to 15 in FY15.

REGIONAL INITIATIVE COUNCILSModeled after national product councils, ULI Carolinas’ regional initiative councils, Rethinking Southern Cities and Market Impact, are small groups of mid to senior-level ULI members from Charlotte, South Carolina and the Triangle which convene two times annually to promote learning, build District Council leadership, share knowledge and expertise and encourage regional collaboration.
