Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

~World Health Organization, 1948

Dear Community Partner: As state and federal funding for behavioral health services has decreased over the years our local funding to support basic needs like housing, utility bills, transportation, medication, vocational and employment services has increased. Many of our consumers benefit more from case management services than traditional counseling, so there has been a cost shift in those areas also. We partner with the medical and business communities as well as other social services to aid our consumers, eliminate duplication and ensure greater stability. Thank you, your continued support enables us to be the safety net for so many! April J. Caraway Executive Director

Washington House Opens

The need for housing and services to

meet the unique needs of youth and

young adults in transition is a growing

problem in Trumbull County. In response

to this problem, Coleman Professional

Services completely rehabilitated a

vacant, foreclosed home into an eight

bedroom facility for young adults

ages 18 – 26. This agency has employed

house monitors and provides

supportive services.

Anti-Stigma Initiative Crosses County Lines The Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana County Boards partnered to create a two-year campaign to raise awareness about mental health issues and reduce stigma. The tri-county initiative includes commercials,

billboards and interviews on WKBN.

Amish Outreach

Amish residents of Trumbull County’s northwestern town -ships face transportation and behavioral health access issues, which have contributed to their historically limited use of mental health and addiction services. The Amish Outreach project serves members of the Amish community in northern Trumbull County. Participants receive routine mental health services and group interventions in their community. This partnership is one of only a few in the state and it has existed for more than a decade.

In FY 2012, the ASAP Opiate Task Force, a project of the Trumbull County Mental Health and Recovery Board, collaborated with the TAG Law Enforcement group to complete two prescription drug take back programs. The two events prevented over 100,000 pills from being diverted and misused. Trumbull County’s ranking as 8th in the state for unintentional drug overdoses makes the proper disposal of medications an important activity. The Task Force continues to meet monthly to strategize ongoing prevention efforts and all are welcome to participate.

The Voices of Youth Committee meets monthly to address barriers that stand in the way of youth and young adults with behavioral health and other disabilities successfully transi-tioning to adulthood. The committee has created the Voices of Youth Closet as a means for youth experiencing a life challenge to obtain personal hygiene items, household cleaning products and access to transportation. The Closet is maintained solely through fund-raising events and volunteerism.

~ Project Highlights ~

In April 2012, the Trumbull County Mental Health and Recovery Board, Valley Counseling Services, COMPASS Family & Community Services and the Best Practices in Schizophrenia Treatment (BeST) Center in the Department of Psychiatry at Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) partnered to establish FIRST Trumbull County, a comprehensive, team-based, early identification and treatment program for individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

ONE Health Ohio

Collaboration

Statistically, consumers diagnosed with a mental illness have a lifespan of 25 years less than the general population. In order to help combat this problem, the Trumbull County Mental Health and Recovery Board works collaboratively with ONE Health Ohio, a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) to provide medical vouchers to clients most in need. The reimbursement for the cost of the voucher/cost per visit to either Warren West or the Lloyd McCoy Center is paid by the TCMHRB to ONE Health Ohio. The impact is over 1,000 medical visits per year for behavioral health clients at no cost.

Mental illness affects 1 in 5 Americans.

It’s as real as cancer and as treatable as a broken arm.

Treatment Works... People Recover.

Recovering People Work and Working People Pay Taxes

~ Mike Hogan (former Director, Ohio Department of Mental Health)
