Annual Report 2017
The Alannah & Madeline Foundation is the leading national not-for-profit organisation focusing on protecting children from violence and creating behaviour change in the community to reduce bullying and cyber bullying.
In 2017 the Foundation marked its 20th anniversary and we are proud to have reached more than 2 million children through our care, prevention and advocacy work.
OUR HISTORY
On 28 April 1996 at the historical Port Arthur site in Tasmania, 35 people were tragically killed.
Alannah and Madeline Mikac, aged six and three, along with their mother, died that day.
Because of this terrible act of violence, Alannah and Madeline’s father, Walter, and a small group of volunteers, worked hard to set up the Foundation with the belief that all children should have a safe and happy childhood without being subjected to any form of violence.
It was launched on 30 April 1997 by the then Prime Minister of Australia, the Hon John Howard OM AC.
OUR VISION
Our vision is that every child will live in a safe and supportive environment.
The simplicity of a six year old girl caring for her younger sister is what the Foundation is dedicated to – helping children live without fear, bullying or violence. This strikes a chord with the entire population, making our message and aim so powerful.
Walter Mikac AM, Founding Patron and father of Alannah and Madeline

Chair messageAt the Alannah & Madeline Foundation, we are creating a safer world – both online and offline - for children by delivering world-leading programs and products.
Through identifying issues that adversely affect the wellbeing of children; we help them recover, and we protect them from bullying and violence.
Working with the best minds, we identify and reduce significant threats to children’s safety through innovation and partnerships – and we speak out on the need for systemic change to build a supportive and safe society for children.
By keeping children safe from violence, they can thrive. Investing in children provides the best return for long term positive impact in our communities.
In 2016 the Foundation released a 5 Year Strategic Plan and in this year’s Annual Report we outline the extensive progress made.
It’s a challenge in this current climate to meet the growing demand for our services to protect and rebuild young lives, yet our progress is significant.
We have adopted a business planning methodology and prioritisation framework and created many opportunities; 2018 will see these come to fruition.
The year has also seen new Members of both the Foundation Board and the National Centre Against Bullying. My heartfelt thanks go to all outgoing Members of both boards for your contribution to a Foundation that significantly – and so positively – impacts so many children by preventing violence in their lives.
We also went back to our roots this year, respecting the milestone of 20 years of the Alannah & Madeline Foundation – in Tasmania. We warmly welcome Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Kate Warner AC to the Foundation family as Patron and are pleased to report the Tasmanian Government has funded eSmart in all schools in the state.
Thanks also to all supporters of the Alannah & Madeline Foundation, the Board, staff and volunteers, as we simply would not achieve what we do without you.
We look forward to your continued support in building a safer world for all our children.
Greg Sutherland Chair

CEO message Violence – in all its forms – against children is not acceptable.
We all want our children to become confident, secure, resilient and inspired young people – they are our hope for the future, the reason we sacrifice our health, sanity and sleep.
Sadly, not every child grows up with that confidence or level of care.
At the Foundation, we work with children who have witnessed or suffered extraordinary trauma – many have lived with significant family violence all their tiny lives and many are now removed from their parents, living in out-of-home care.
The physical, psychological and emotional impact of violence on children is pervasive and can be lifelong and intergenerational. It affects not only the child, but everyone around them and has negative social and financial impacts, both now and into the future.
This is also the case with bullying and cyber bullying.
We love the freedom and opportunities the internet brings but we are also very aware of its pitfalls, from children being exposed to inappropriate content, to fraud, scams and to being bullied – which can and does contribute to anxiety and distress.
As a nation, we should all be working to raise a generation of smart, safe and responsible children, who are confident, capable and compassionate – both on and offline.
Our preventative eSmart suite of programs is a way to achieve this. This Annual Report outlines how eSmart is evolving and reaching more communities.
However, our work is just not possible without you.
Through your support – from communities, corporates, donors, Government and volunteers – we can continue to run our world-leading programs, support services and products, as well as advocate for a safer world for our children.
Thank you.
Lesley Podesta Chief Executive Officer

Walter’s message As you may know - on 28 April 1996 my life changed forever. It’s hard to believe that 21 years have since passed.
On that day I was hosting a local golf tournament in southern Tasmania when the sounds of shots were heard from across the bay. At the time we thought they were the sounds of a re-enactment at the historic site at Port Arthur.
Tragically they weren’t. Not long after I learned that my two young daughters Alannah and Madeline, along with my wife and 32 others had been killed.
Early on when my grief was still strong and I couldn’t easily find sleep I made a decision that my anger would not turn to hate.
I vowed to use the catastrophe as a springboard to honour them, and so I focused on every good thing I could remember or I could find. I read all the letters that Alannah wrote to me, the pictures she drew and remembered the way that Maddie would follow her everywhere.
I chose to celebrate positive memories more passionately than commiserate any negative events. I looked for good in the world, not the bad.
A year after that fateful day, the Alannah & Madeline Foundation was established, created to help protect children from violence. It was also founded to create hope for those who have little or none at all.
In 2017 we acknowledged 20 years of the Alannah & Madeline Foundation and helping keep children safe from violence. It was poignant to be back in Tasmania to mark the anniversary.
Over those 20 years the Foundation has gone on to reach more than 2 million children through its care, prevention and advocacy programs, as well as working to ensure our gun laws remain strong and in line with the National Firearms Agreement 1996.
Sadly violence will always be prevalent in our society, but we can all do whatever we possibly can to help keep our children safe. Supporting the Alannah & Madeline Foundation is just one way of doing this.
I sincerely thank you for your support over the past 20 years.

International Patron“The vision of the Alannah & Madeline Foundation is that every child will live in a safe and supportive environment and that is a vision I share. That vision is also the right of a child, and the Alannah & Madeline Foundation works tirelessly to help make this a reality.
With violence and bullying so apparent in society today, both in Australia and around the world, it’s wonderful to see an organisation not only take a stand against it, but to implement world-leading programs in communities and schools to help combat it.
The Foundation also plays a strong advocacy role in the community – speaking up for those who cannot speak for themselves – regarding violence and bullying.
Keeping children safe from violence and bullying is one of the most important responsibilities that we as a society undertake.
I am incredibly proud to be the International Patron of the Alannah & Madeline Foundation.”
Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mary of Denmark
National Patron“There is nothing more important than the safety and wellbeing of our children. As parents, teachers, coaches, mentors – we all strive to protect those in our care, and to instil in them the values of respect, responsibility and resilience that will serve them throughout their lives.
Despite our best endeavours, there will be times, and there will be children, for whom things will fall apart. As a community, we need to be there to catch them, to listen and act when help is required, and assert the right of all children to live free from violence and abuse.
For more than 20 years, this is what the Alannah & Madeline Foundation has done. In refuges and emergency accommodation, in schools, homes and communities, it has sought to bring comfort to those in need, and worked hard to prevent abuse from occurring.
This is a cause that could not be closer to our collective hearts, and I am proud to serve as its National Patron.”
The Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP Prime Minister of Australia
