HARMONIZING HEMATOLOGY EDUCATION IN 2016

Education

“They say the best way of learning is to teach. I have been involved in EHA Hematology Tutorials for over eight years. The preparation of cases for the tutorials is an excellent way of keeping up to date. I have carried out over 200 podcasts and in doing this I have met many interesting people and hopefully the interviews provide a relaxed approach to learning.” - Shaun R McCann, Ireland

Medical education program As a knowledge platform, the association offers a comprehensive and integral curriculum which forms the basis for the Medical Education Program through which professionals acquire state-of-the-art knowledge by use of various means. Through the global connection, EHA makes peer-reviewed knowledge available, which is directly applicable in practice. This allows professionals to always be aware of latest trends, developments, publications and studies.

EHA’s Medical Education Program is based on the following principles:

• CME: Continuous Medical Education • Integrated approach:

o Comprehensive state-of-the-art curriculum (eight areas of special interest)

o Cross-media (online: ELC, publications and on-site: events) o Users are informed of the latest trends, developments, publications and research,

including results

• Connects professionals with an interest in hematology on a global level • The shared knowledge is independent and peer-reviewed • Represents hematology as a mono-specialty

EHA Learning Center (official learning platform of EHA) The EHA Learning Center is expanding. Thousands of users use the Learning Center every month to read watch and browse through the extensive online learning activities and scientific materials.

With the EHA Learning Center, a broad variety of educational tools including webcasts, interviews with key opinion leaders, accredited courses and online patient cases as well as annual congress materials are made available on one platform. 11

The focus on the development of more e-learning tools always related to one or more topics of the European Hematology Curriculum will increase in 2017.

Every month, over 2000 unique users go to the EHA Learning Center, with a clear peak around the Congress (almost 14,000 unique users).

EHA-SWG Scientific Meetings EHA facilitates 19 Scientific Working Groups (SWGs). These are active networks of scientists with an interest in particular topics. The EHA-SWG Scientific Meetings are established as scientifically-focused meetings which aim to exchange scientific knowledge and promote collaboration within the hematology community. The meetings cover both hematologic malignancies and non-malignant topics. The programs deliver experts’ perspectives on the latest findings, offer discussions with patient organizations, interactive clinical cases and round table sessions.

Furthermore, it provides an opportunity to discuss evolving therapies with leading experts in hematology as well as the opportunity to network among faculty and colleagues. The network opportunity is also always very much appreciated. The small scale meetings make it easy to talk to the faculty and other delegates.

In 2016, the focus of these meetings was on the EHA Scientific Conference on Bleeding Disorders. This meeting was organized by EHA, together with the SWG Bleeding and Thrombosis and the SWG Thrombocytopenia and Platelet Function Disorders.

The conference was attended by 130 participants from 35 countries and 6 continents, and was targeted at clinicians, basic researchers, biologists and students interested in bleeding disorders.

Furthermore, in 2016, the meeting program for 2017-2018 has been set up. An interesting program of seven EHA-SWG scientific meetings has been prepared with a wide range of topics within the hematological field.

EHA Master Class

“The Master Class has been a great experience that opened the door to another way of learning. I have met great colleagues who were really engaged with the cases as if they were from a real patient. The fact that we were having the feedback session with the case author was really motivating.” - Mariane Villegas, Sweden

The EHA Master Class is an online problem-based group learning experience for hematologists. The course, developed for junior as well as senior hematologists, is aimed to contribute to enhancing the harmonization and quality of hematology practice across Europe and beyond.

In 2016, 25 mentees successfully finished the EHA Classical Master Class of 2015-2016.

12

In that year, one bite-size course was held in February on the topics of thrombosis, thrombophilia and anticoagulation and on thalassemia. Nineteen mentees benefitted from this course.

In October, another bite-size course was held on the topics of thrombosis, thrombophilia and anticoagulation, thalassemia and clinical trials. In this course, 22 mentees have received their certificates of participation.

Outreach For many years, EHA has had an Outreach Program which is aimed at providing hematology medical education to countries outside Europe that expressed an interest in co-organizing such education and training in their county. One of the core principles in this program is that these are always organized based on the needs indicated by these countries.

EHA’s Outreach Program consists of hematology tutorials, joint symposia and Highlights of Past EHA which is based on the program of EHA’s annual congress.

Hematology Tutorials are courses aiming to provide laboratory and clinical hematologists with an integrated diagnostic and clinical work-up of hematological disorders.

• A new program was launched: CRTH (Clinical Research Training in Hematology) o High demand: more than 50 applications! o Learning needs were assessed beforehand, resulting in market research like

knowledge of what early career clinical researchers want o We want to use this information to develop a Master Class o Evaluations after 1st workshop were positive

• Translational Research Training in Hematology (TRTH)

TRTH The TRTH 2016 program began with a week-long course from March 11-18, 2016 in Milan, Italy during which most of the work was done. A mix of didactic sessions and breakout sessions allowed for a highly interactive learning experience.

The trainees presented their project at the start of the Spring Course, and by the end of the week, they presented an updated project that had undergone many changes and tweaks.

As preparation for the meeting at the 21st Congress of EHA, the participants were asked to read At the Helm, a book about leading your laboratory. Each small working group was asked to summarize a few chapters and present it to the others and discussed what they could apply. This session was followed by a talk by Ami Bhatt, a former TRTH participant, who described the perils and pearls of starting a lab and shared lessons on effective strategies relevant to leading a lab. The participants

14

indicated that the session was of value since it forced them to think about relevant skills and whether these skills needed training/development.

The final meeting, which took place at the 58th Annual Congress of ASH, enabled trainees to get advice from faculty regarding challenges they met while implementing strategies learnt at the course thus far. The trainees presented their learnings at the end of this session.

Achievements of past trainees Below a preliminary report can be found on the accomplishments of the trainees who participated in the first six classes of TRTH. The results reported here are based on data submitted through an online survey using Survey Monkey. A total of 115 trainees, of the 118 who participated in TRTH between 2010 and 2015, responded to the survey: response rate = 97.45%

The course has so far included slightly more men than women. Most trainees (>75%) have a medical degree.

Most trainees have changed position (72%) and 34% of past trainees now run their own lab. This entails managing staff, the budget, the research strategy and purchases.

LOBBYING FOR HEMATOLOGY IN 2016

Hematology Awareness Campaign EHA launched its Hematology Awareness Campaign in 2016 which aims to:

• increase awareness of hematology as a medical discipline with its own distinct clinical and research needs, and

• enhance the position and visibility of EHA as the prime representative of hematologists in Europe.

In the first half of the year, the EHA Roadmap for European Hematology Research ( also known as Research Roadmap) and the EHA-commissioned Cost of Blood Disorders study (in The Lancet Haematology) were published. A stakeholder mapping and regulatory audit were produced, communication materials were developed and position papers were drafted.

The five position papers, approved by the Board, formulate EHA’s key lobbying priorities:

• support for hematology research in Horizon 2020 (and future EU research funding programs);

• access to treatment for patients with blood disorders; • EU collaboration to reduce the prices of innovative medicines; • the Europe-wide definition of professional qualifications in hematology; and

• improved implementation of legislation protecting the safety and quality of blood and blood components.

By the end of the summer, the campaign reached its action phase. By conducting stakeholder meetings and engaging in relevant issue-based platforms and stakeholder fora, EHA pursues the following objectives:

• Advocating key EHA positions vis-à-vis policymakers, politicians, and interest groups (patients, medical societies, pharmaceutical industry)

• Contributing to policy debates to influence future legislation/regulation

• Building relationships and alliances to be more effective at making hematology’s voice heard

EU-funded projects EHA plays a prominent role in two major EU-funded projects which were initiated in 2016:

• HARMONY is a project under the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI), a partnership between the European Commission and the pharmaceutical industry that aims to foster better access and care for patients with various hematologic malignancies (HM) with the use of big data.

• EuroBloodNet is the European Reference Network (ERN) for rare hematological diseases. It aims to gather expertise and data from across Europe on blood disorders, both malignant and non-malignant, which require scarce and highly-specialized knowledge and resources.

17

MAINTAINING RELATIONSHIPS AND PHILANTROPHY IN 2016

Sponsoring In 2016, EHA maintained relations with current partners and amplified collaboration, partnership and innovation by introducing new projects and activities (CRTH and SWGs). EHA’s Medical Education Program (MEP) was expanded in 2016, offering mentoring opportunities, research grants and events with updates on issues impacting the medicines and patient care. EHA is increasingly a forum for the exchange of information between the pharmaceutical industry, healthcare providers, pharmacies and other partners. In 2016, it had 28 corporate partners:

Page 19: Annual Report 2016 · Annual Report 2016 European Hematology Association . Koninginnegracht 12b 2514 AA The Hague The Netherlands . RSIN/fiscal number: NL8090.86.864

18

The interest of industry to partner with EHA is steadily growing. The EHA Annual Congress continues to be a unique networking opportunity attracting partners while programs introducing new digital technologies like the EHA Learning Center are of growing interest as well. EHA focuses on collaborative partnerships. The evolving links between the pharmaceutical industry and EHA are increasingly shifting away from a transactional relationship to a strategic partnership.

In line with EHA’s mission to promote education, research and patient care, EHA explored in the current debates on pricing models, registrars and clinical trials with industry to assess new models for innovative products in order to remain balanced and provide for access to all medicines.

In light of this, we would like to thank all partners for the excellent cooperation until now and we look forward to continuing the future innovative partnerships, patient-centered integrated care programs, corporate responsibility that makes good business sense and strong collaboration within the industry and to shape the future of healthcare provision together.

Scientific Working Groups (SWGs) The 19 Scientific Working Groups that EHA has are essential working parties for pharmaceuticals. They provide a vital link between manufacturers, pharmacies, doctors, hospitals and ultimately, the patients. They serve as a forum for collaboration and partnership between scientists in order to create win-win scenarios that ultimately benefit the well-being of patients. SWGs provide a space for learning, dialogue and exchange among everyone involved in hematology research.

The new SWG structure was created in 2016 to paint a comprehensive and up-to-date picture of research areas relevant to the field and outlines the importance from both an economic and a hematology care point of view. Focusing on the EHA Research Road Map, the new structure shows that continuous research development in Europe involves various stakeholders and need for funding.

Due to their effective function, they work on guidelines, build relationships with patient organizations and pharma and identify new innovative areas for research. They organize the EHA SWG Scientific Meetings, sessions at the EHA congress and provide scientific input for the EHA Medical Education. They help define a policy agenda for hematology and contribute to the development of EHA position papers and lobbying in Brussels.

By encouraging all SWG members to work together, EHA reflects not only on the importance of cooperation with scientists which has gained for EHA, but it also reaffirms and substantiates the association's reputation.

EHA Friends’ Fund In 2016, EHA took a major step forward with the launch of EHA Friends’ Fund. To respond to all challenges in hematology care in Europe and beyond, EHA created a fund to raise funds for research and education in hematology. The model increases the engagement with the community, demonstrates the important role of our sector and its’ benefit to patients.

Profit is only included when realized on the balance sheet date. Losses originating before the end of the financial year are taken into account if they have become known before preparation of the financial statements. Revenues from services are recognized in proportion to the services rendered. The cost price of these services is allocated to the same period.

Notes on the balance sheet:

The Equity of EHA is reserved for the continuity of the organization in general. The financial aspects of these long term risks are covered by the Equity of EHA.
