PRESIDENT'S REPORT It was a great way to start the new season in September with the Club being recognised as the Queensland Surf Life Saving Club of the Year for our performance in the 2013/14 season. This is a fantastic accolade and one we should all be very proud to have achieved. Since our last annual report we were also recognised with nine awards at South Coast Branch annual awards for our performance in 2013/14. Again a great way to start the 2014-15 season. I am very happy to again report that this has been another successful season for the Club with continued overall improvement and movement towards our vision. The highlights of this improvement are summarized below (and in detail in the attached Strategic Plan Scorecard summary):

Increased overall membership by 6% to a Club record of 886 members. Increased number of patrolling members by 7.6% to 213 (again a new record). Increased number of Nippers by 7.1% to 300. Increased number of awards completed by members by 6% to 247. Providing excess patrol member capacity to assist other Gold Coast clubs and SLSQ Duty

Officer. Improved Masters and Youth results at State and Australian Championships. Improved Nippers results at State Championships (11th) Increased revenue for Surf Club by 18% Debt reduced by $213,000

These statistics again highlight overall growth and improvement across all areas of the Club. We have nominated for 17 awards this season which gives an indication of the depth of our performance as a Club and the efforts of our members. A highlight this season for me was to see new activities being started through the initiative of members such as R&R, pool rescue and our Club Camp (which is being attended by members with interests in all areas of the Club). It is very pleasing also to get feedback from many new members to our Club about how much they enjoy being here and how they notice the friendly atmosphere and positive relationships between our members. Some of our biggest challenges remain maintaining this culture and values as we get bigger and better; enhancing revenue streams to keep up with our growth; and managing activity and effort across the whole Club (rather than by sections). We also still need to continue to provide opportunities for all to develop to meet their potential and we need more members to step forward into management roles to help with the ever increasing workload of running the Queensland Club of the Year. Early in the new season I propose we review our strengths, weaknesses and our strategic plan objectives to ensure we remain focused on these challenges. I thank the Management Committee for their outstanding efforts in managing the Club again this season and in making (and following through on) the hard decisions made in the best interests of the Club. I am very proud and privileged to work with such a fine group of senior members whose focus is always on what is best for the Club. I should also acknowledge the great work done by our Judiciary Committee this season in fairly and effectively dealing with a difficult and sensitive matter. Thanks also to all other officers and members who have volunteered to help in the various committees that run the Club. Without your efforts the Club simply would not function. Thanks also to our special office staff (Jo and Lee) and Scott and the Supporters Club staff for your significant contribution once again. I look forward to continuing our growth and improvement next season on our way to achieving our strategic plan vision of becoming one of the premier surf life saving clubs in Australia. SECRETARY’S REPORT What a great Season it has been! As a Club we have achieved so much, as the contents of this Annual Report demonstrate. There are many initiatives within Surf Life Saving that can be introduced / improved to our Club. What it takes to get new initiatives off the ground is for our Members that are passionate about a particular area to commit to the time and energy that each initiative requires to make it successful. Without the commitment and energy of our members, there would be little to report at the end of the Season. Mermaid Beach AEME SLSC has the benefit of a number of such committed members and we are appreciative of them all. If you would like to see something improved or commenced at the Club and you have the time and energy to commit, please let one of the Management Committee members know so we can support you to achieve your goals. My thanks to the Administration Team: Our Office Staff, Jo and Lee, continue to work alongside our members and provide a great service to all. Whenever you have a query, they are a fantastic resource to go to. If they don’t have the answer for you, they will know who to refer you to. (Generally, Jo manages all things Life Saving and Nippers and Lee manages all things financial.) Jo and Lee continue to give above and beyond what their paid positions require. Thank you Ladies, so much! Our long standing Caretaker and Life Member, Mr Steve Jones, has left the building! Jonesy, as he was affectionately known, has moved out and is actually soon to be moving to NSW with his adoring partner (and our Chief Training Officer), Marty. We recognised Jonesy’s amazing contributions over the past 17 years at the Annual Dinner. When the list of what he has been involved in was read out at the Annual Dinner, it was fantastic to hear all of the significant contributions he has achieved over the years. THANK YOU for everything Mr Jones! In light of Jonesy leaving, we have welcomed a new Caretaker, Hamish Chapman, to the Club. Hamish hails from Devonport, Tasmania. He is a qualified Teacher and a dedicated surf sports competitor who wanted to move to the Gold Coast to live the dream. Hamish commenced in April 2015 and has shown in the short time that he has been with us that he is a reliable and capable young man. Hamish has a lot to learn about our Club and the way it operates and he is looking forward to learning all the tasks that Jonesy did so well. Please welcome Hamish if you haven’t done so already. Tess Briody has fulfilled the role of Registrar this Season. Tess assists with membership applications at the beginning of the Season, including being present at sign on days. Tess has also assisted with many other events throughout the Season, including being available for multiple fundraising opportunities. I am sure Tess would agree that she has been on a steep learning curve. Thank you Tess! Our Grievance Officer this Season has been Michelle Lederhose. This role is one that, if done right, works unnoticed in the background assisting our Members to find resolution to issues they have identified as requiring assistance with. Michelle has fulfilled this pivotal role with quiet resolution and determination to help our Members whenever they have requested it. Thank you Michelle Finally, my thanks to our Management Committee. Phil, Mark, Stevo, Matt, Capn Pete, Tom, Marty and Wayne; your commitment and experience are highly valued. With each of you in your role, our Club Family have some role models that they can look up to and be proud of. I know that each of you have spent many hours on the planning and coordination of activities in all areas of the Club. I know that you do it for the love of our Club and not for recognition. You are the quiet achievers who are the foundation of our Club. I applaud you all in that we uphold our Club values at our Management Committee meetings and base some difficult discussions and decisions based on those same values:

Thank you to each member of our wonderful Club. May we continue to work together and celebrate together as a family at our home away from home, the Mermaid Beach AEME Surf Life Saving Club. CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT Excitement in Surf Sports and IRB racing, the promise of fun youth activities and positive leadership from our Patrol Captains all ably supported by an enthusiastic education team has resulted in increased quantity and higher quality life savers. This increase has meant we’ve been able to improve our services to Surf Lifesaving. We now have 195 Active Patrol members. On several occasions this season we’ve assisted Nobby Beach and Miami with patrol members when requested. Also Team Moore volunteered for a patrol at Rainbow Bay in April. I’m assured all members enjoyed the experience. Our usual summer holidays early morning roving service was extended through to the season end. We also extended the roving service to cover approximately 6 km from Miami to Broadbeach.

24 rescues – 9 board rescues, 8 tube rescues, 3 IRB rescues, 4 rescues unspecified. 90 first aid actions. 1088 preventative actions 35,857 beach attendances 43 hours beach closures

Prevention is always better than the cure. Our high number of preventative actions help to keep recues to a minimum. One of the great strengths we have as a club is the positive role models we have leading our patrol teams. Thanks to Patrol Captains Pete Reckin, Lloyd Cox, Dale Penman, Tony Hoppitt, Rusty Brown, Jorg Schumacher, Jeremy Sturges, Emma Eichhorn, Tom Sealy, Jemma Gillam, Michelle Lederhose, Chris Sealy, Greg Moreton, Cameron Yabsley, Leon Leis and Will Nash. Keeping our life saving gear and equipment maintained is an ongoing task which can be expensive. The tractor, now four years old, is in good shape mechanically with only some minor rust. After some teething problems, the one season old ATV is in great shape. The six year old 4WD ute succumbed to rust and has been put out to pasture. Although not absolutely essential to our services, a new dual cab ute would greatly assist us across a wide range of activities. A wishful grant has been lodged for this purpose. Thanks to Gear Steward Jeremy Sturges for your help throughout the season and particularly addressing the initial problems with the ATV. Jeremy also took on the role as Radio Officer looking after the problem plagued new digital radios. Thanks once again to Pete and Dave Reckin of Auto Leaders Southport for their mechanical help and rust prevention expertise. Our IRB Captain Chris Sealy has been tireless in training new IRB drivers and crewies, coaching the IRB racing team and keeping our IRB hulls and motors up to date and finely tuned. A grant from the Queensland Government Gambling Community Benefit Fund has enabled us to replace two of the oldest hulls for the start of next season. Thanks to Southport Rotary Club for a grant which will buy us a new motor. Brenda Samosa has once again proven very dependable as First Aid Officer and Dale Penman has done well in the never complete job as Craft Captain. Our Young Life Saver of the Year Will Nash has provided great support this season as Club Vice Captain. When Marty Avent took on the role as Chief Training Officer four seasons ago she was practically on her own. Sadly Marty is moving interstate but she leaves behind a vibrant team of trainers. Thanks Marty!! Being part of such a tireless, devoted Management Committee I can only feel positive about the season ahead. Go Team Mermaid!! Pete Degnian Club Captain

    SURF SPORTS DIRECTOR’S REPORT

What another exciting season it has been. We are continuing to expand our numbers of participants and the events we are competing in and are also retaining and building in our junior age categories. This season, with great dedication from a few of our members, Mermaid Beach AEME SLSC has added R & R competition to the list of disciplines we compete in, which in turn provided us with the necessary equipment to compete in belt swim racing. We also currently have members competing in Pool Rescue. A big thanks to Mel Gerry, Kevin Blair, Lisa Clout and Jacqui Carpenter for your efforts in getting these disciplines started. Graeme Huegill has had another outstanding season in the Boats which would not be possible without his passion, commitment and the sacrifices he has made to keep the ball rolling and to continue to build the Boat section this season. JUNIOR ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR’S REPORT Bam! Mermaid continues to grow and show that we are a club on the improve. This year we reached over 300 junior members and I believe we will grow continually for the next few years. We had some excellent results this year: a 3rd place at Gold Coast City Titles and I believe that is the best result yet. Again 3rd in the Branch and climbed one more spot at States to 11th. I was also pleased to see the number of parents putting their hands up and become involved in the club. This is always the hardest part of the Junior Committee to get into action. I would like to thank our new Officials [some of who weren’t that keen but put their hands up (thanks Vanessa)]. This season see's the end of an era for some of the people I have had the pleasure to have got to know. Firstly Kym and Greg our under 14's age managers these guys loved their group and it showed by the way they looked after them. A big shout out to my BBQ man Peter Hutchings I cannot thank him enough on his time spent on the BBQ for the last 4 years. Pete will be around as he has moved onto officiating at carnivals. Most of all the parents who have lent their time to help my job as JAC easier. Finally Michael Dalton he has been the backbone to the information being sent out and making sure everyone in the club knows what is going on, without Michael's help and assistance the club would be worse off. As I am stepping down this year as JAC I cannot be any happier in the growth and enjoyment I see around the beach on a Sunday. I would like to formally thank the Management Committee for their guidance and help in helping me immensely. As I am still going to be an Age Manger to my mighty under 11's next year and no doubt involved in something else around the club, I will see you all on the beach next year. CHIEF TRAINING OFFICER’S REPORT

This season our training team settled in and showed what can be achieved together. Our IRB training thrives under the leadership of Chris Sealy and his team of dedicated helpers. The skill of the drivers and crewies continue to improve with all of their racing training, which is a great off shoot and demonstrates how Surf Sports and Education can compliment each other so well. The dynamic team of Melinda Gerry, Emma Eichhorn and Jeremy Sturgess continue to demonstrate their knowledge by training multiple courses this season to ensure our Club continues to thrive on the beach and in the water. We pride ourselves on the reputation that Mermaid’s training is to a high standard, we have worked hard to achieve this and I congratulate and thank every one of our training members for upholding this standard. The sort of success that Mermaid is achieving does not happen easily. Thank you to all of our members who willingly attend courses to up skill, keep proficient or learn a new skill. This season was my last as Mermaid’s Chief Training Officer, I have loved my time in the position and as well as the above mentioned trainers I cannot leave without mentioning my wing-man Russell Brown who was always where I needed him to be, thank you for your support and friendship over the years. Tony Wilson, Pete Degnian, Dale and Sandy Penman and Wayne Marshall, who were my “go to” experienced surf gurus and water safety time after time, thank you for making yourself available to us. Training always involves more members than just the trainers, for all those patrol members that sat in IRBs for us, who swam and paddled and supported our squads and me over the years, thank you from the bottom of my heart. I am confident that Steve and I are leaving the training of our members in very safe hands, we wish everyone further success next season and promise to pop in every now and again to say hello. FIRST AID OFFICER’S REPORT

As you are all aware last season was a great time for our club. We had lot of new members join which was great because that meant there were a lot more people on patrol. I would like to thank everyone who informed me regarding any first aid equipment that needed replacing or repairing. The first aid room was always kept clean and tidy by each patrol and we all know how difficult this can be when there is sand about. I would also like to say a big thank you to Ann for all the help she has given me over the past few weeks, trying to get all of the out of date stuff out of the bags and replacing it with the new. We did try to get a system going by putting the out of date stuff on a table and going through each bag one at a time. As you can imagine this got very confusing and what should have taken us a few hours turned into a few hours over 3 or 4 days ha! But all is good now with every bag ready to go for the start of the new season. Also most of you will know by now that we will be losing two of our greatest members from the club this

season (Jonesy and Marty) I can honestly say that the club will never be the same without these guys

being around. Not only have they put a lot of time into the club over the years but they are also two of

the greatest friends anyone could have and we will all miss them especially me. But on a better note

Marty recons that the flights are really cheap and we can all go and see them any time, so I will be

putting a note on the notice board for anyone who wants to come with me. I think they might be very

surprised when we all turn up.

    Brenda Samosa. First Aid Officer

GEAR STEWARD’S REPORT The season began with the usual update and repair of all gear and equipment relating to patrols etc. It's been a long season that seems to not have even finished yet as equipment is still being used as though it is still peak season, with of course ongoing repairs carried out on all boards, signs and equipment. With new changes and new people around the club it is important that we all continue to appreciate our equipment and stay in touch with new changes and processes. New Patrol Flags will of course be purchased in the hope that they will last out for the season. The new ATV has been great through the season with the third key barrel installed at the start of the season and a re-induction that followed proved to be valuable. The usual pre-season rustproofing of the ATV and the tractor as well as servicing will be done shortly. Overall I am happy how the ATV and tractor have been looked after; the rustproofing and servicing is just a ritual not to be ditched. We now have six new radios in full force. We seemed to have some trouble with them during the season and will strive at finding out why we had these problems so we can rectify them. Thank You very much to the Patrol Captain’s and their teams for another dedicated season and respecting the patrol gear and mostly always washing the gear properly. Jeremy Sturges Gear Steward

BOAT CAPTAIN’S REPORT 2014/15 was the year of consolidation, after the previous season of successful resurrection. And, for successive seasons, in contrast to a trend experienced by rival Boat Sections across the state, we introduced new rowers to the sport and increased numbers. A feat that has been noticed by, and applauded by the Queensland Surf Rowers League (QSRL), and, the Australian Surf Rowers League (ASRL). THE CREWS Of the three crews from last season, The Mayhem and The Bambi's kicked on, and, the Reserve Grade (The Mad Huegys) rebuilt with fresh men. In addition, we also debuted an U19 Men's crew (The Red Kelly's) and a 160y Masters Women's crew (The Boilers). Last season's Crew of the Year - The Mayhem, went around the cans again with varying degrees of success. They were the only crew that remained unchanged and their experience together resulted in being the club's most competitive crew. They consistently made finals in all conditions from big and nasty, to the Mooloolaba millpond. Along the way, they collected the Qld Navy Series Masters Premiership, made the State Final, and, made the Semi-Final at Aussies. Well done guys. Bow - Nigel Bull 2nd Bow - Lloyd Cox 2nd Stroke - Cameron Pither Stroke - Phil Chipman Sweep - Graeme Huegill This season's Crew of the Year - The Bambi's had a great year. Building upon last years experience, with grit and determination, they peaked at this years Aussies by progressing past the cuts and racing in elimination. Along the way, they won the Maroochydore Murphy Builders Carnival which attracted a handsome pay cheque - certainly made Singo smile! These girls set the example for all crews through their training ethic, fundraising effort and race day determination. Well done ladies! Bow - Johanna Boonstoppel 2nd Bow - Lauren Skelsey 2nd Stroke - Kylie Nash Stroke - Deb Jones Sweep - Phil Chipman The Reserve Graders - The Mad Huegys was essentially a new crew built predominately from first year rowers. During the season this crew showed glimpses of what they were (are) capable of. Unfortunately, they had a very interrupted season due to injuries and were forced to 'shuffle the cards' on a couple of occasions. Looking forward, I'm proud that within crew, the club has unearthed two young goers that, with time, I'm sure will develop into championship rowers. Well done lads! Bow - Aaron Halliday 2nd Bow - Matthew Palmer 2nd Stroke - Matthew Honeyman Stroke - Stephen Lucas Sweep - Graeme Huegill The Red Kelly's - After much (much, much, much, soooo much) effort, we debuted an U19 Men's crew. This is very, very significant not only for the club, but for the sport.

  • Mermaid Beach AEME SLSC Inc - Annual Report 2014/2015 Page 21

This crew was built around two rowers who were actively part of the section since August. Despite 'shuffling the cards' on a number of occasions, and, with exhausting a lifetime of favours, I'm proud to have been able to give Elliott Creagh and David Moreton a crew to race with. This crew debuted at States and rowed 5 rounds against crews who have rowed all year, only to just miss out on the Final. They went on to compete at Aussies and now have the taste for bigger things. They will be a crew to look out for! Bow - Zach Thompson-Smith 2nd Bow - Oliver Macklin 2nd Stroke - David Moreton Stroke - Elliott Creagh Sweep - Graeme Huegill The Boilers (160y Masters Women's Crew) - Without doubt, our most expensive crew. But also, to their credit, the won Mermaids first ever Surfboat medal at an Aussies! Bow - Louise Ferguson 2nd Bow - Penny Rossiter 2nd Stroke - Kylie Nash Stroke - Deb Jones Sweep - Phil Chipman THE SPIRIT OF MERMAID Without doubt, one of the highlights during the season was the delivery of a new boat, The Spirit of Mermaid. I am (we are) grateful that the club showed its support and commitment to the section by providing such a valuable and much needed resource. Thank you once again! SPONSORS AND FUNDRAISING: Despite popular belief, it's not just spend, spend, spend with the boat section. In fact, I'm proud to report that the crews actively contributed to the cause by raising funds and going the extra yard. A big thanks to those who attended raffles, fundraising ventures such as the Golf Day and Carols Carparking, assisting our Surf Girl (Boatie - Johanna Boonstoppel), and, to the Bambi's who saved approx $5k by cleaning club toilets. Well done girls! Well done team! The section also brought home the bacon, firstly by winning 2 divisions at the Mermaid Wave Catching Carnival ($500), and the Open Women's (some say it was all Huegs...) took out the Opens Women's at the Maroochydore Murphys Builders Carnival with a $2,500 cheque. We certainly mastered the sea that day! Further to this, I would like to thank the sponsors that came on board this season:- Mermaid Mates - Eye of Horus, Satchells (Peter Nash), Plaster-on (Lloyd Cox), DHL/Geoff Huegill Pty Ltd (Oar Sponsorship) Kennards Hire - Major Boat Sponsor Thank you very much for your support. I look forward to building on these relationships in the coming season. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS In closing, I'd like to acknowledge and thank the following:- The Club and Committee - Thank you for support and opportunities. I know that at times some of you have dealt with 'cranky' and 'demanding' Huegs. For that, I'm sorry... But please know and

understand that this is born through passion. Passion for surf boats is what this sport (and SLSA in general) needs and my goal is to not only grow it in Mermaid for Mermaid but, to grow it (through Mermaid) nationally so that one day my sons can row in surf, against healthy competition. And hopefully their sons can row in surf, against healthy competition. Marty, Mel, Jo and Lee - Thank you for helping me get the juniors on the water (finally!!!!) This IS a major achievement. Your efforts not only allowed us to field an U19 crew, but, we also (for the first time ever) competed in the Surfboat Relay at States and Aussies. This was noticed and acknowledged by everyone in the Surfboat Fraternity. Mermaid is strong because of your efforts! My Rowers – For putting in, for the blood, sweat and tears, and for building character. And for putting up with my speeches, text messages and spruiks! MOVING FORWARD Moving forward, we will continue to build the section. We will be fitter. We will be stronger. We will uphold our culture. We will make finals. We will win races. Mermaid will consolidate existing crews, and aim to bring on new crews. It is imperative that we keep focusing on developing juniors (U19 men’s and U23 women’s) and develop a new sweep Season 2015/16 will see crews with a full preparation under their belt, valuable racing experience, a tight bond, and established goals. Yours In Oars Graeme Huegill Boat Captain

IRB CAPTAIN’S REPORT What a great season! Thanks To all my helpers who have given up their valuable time to help out with the training of IRB drivers and crew, water safety and nipper carnivals and special events. THANK YOU Patrols We are still just covering patrol obligations with drivers and crew and are always looking at new ways to motivate members to obtain these awards. With some new up and coming trainers I am hoping we can run more driver and crew courses next season. Equipment As our IRB hulls age and are very expensive to replace, this year we were very lucky to obtain a grant from the Gambling Foundation to purchase 2 new IRB hulls. The hulls have been ordered and hopefully will be ready for next season. A big thank you to Lee Murphy for submitting the grant. Great Work IRB Racing This year five young enthusiastic committed Nobbys Beach members joined our Mermaid Beach IRB Racing Team: Emily Sprake • Emma Williams • Lilli Robinsen • Michael Mills • Brenden Scoffell I am sure Nobbys are very proud of them. It has been great to have some new faces join the team and hope this will encourage others to join next year. Having competed in three carnivals to date with points on the board our team is showing a very competitive streak. With States and Aussie to come in the next few weeks, a strong focus on technique will prepare us for these carnivals. I hope these valuable Nobbys members will join us next year and bring their mates. IRB Carnival Mermaid On the 6 -7th June Mermaid held Round 4 of the IRB Ocean Roar Championships. A great carnival with over $4000 raised for the club. A big thank you to all who helped on the day to make it so successful. Thanks for Nobbys for lending their tractor and driver for the weekend. Well done. End of Season Celebrations This year’s end of season annual IRB Rollover Party will be held soon. All members welcome. See the Mermaid Memo for information. See you next season Chris Sealy - IRB Captain

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT REPORT Here’s to the season that was! Mermaid has made many improvements to the way we engage with each other and deliver opportunities to our membership this season. This year the Youth Development Committee identified issues and opportunities around the club for increased youth involvement. This season our Youth Development Committee has committed to:

    • Focusing on club unity and inclusion; a ground up approach • Connecting with 13-15 year old members to discuss where their interests lie and what activities they would like to participate in • Providing more options in areas such as R + R competition, IRB racing competition, pool rescue competition, water safety opportunities • Focus on core purpose; lifesaving skills, training and personal development • Encouraging ‘up-skilling’ of young members to obtain awards whilst showing these members how these awards can be of benefit to them personally and for the organisation • Working together and appreciating the fact that everyone is here for a common purpose and we are all an important piece of the puzzle • Working in conjunction with Nipper Age Managers and parents of U12-U14 members to promote youth activities and pathways after Nippers • Collaborating with Surf Sports coaches to promote and involve youth competitors to be actively involved in other activities other than pure competition • Communication with Patrol Captains to encourage young members to be involved in other activities

Mermaid’s membership statistics have been on the steady incline for the past 5 years. This year the club facilitated opportunities for a total of 134 members between the ages of 13 to 25 years old. There were a total of 89 new Surf Life Saving awards attained by these members alone. Many of these members have been heavily involved with water safety, first aid and training and education programs facilitated by the club throughout the season. Congratulations to these members!

The Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter made its yearly visit at the nippers Christmas party again this year with Santa and a number of nippers trending on our social media page for the following few days. Mermaid sent members to the SLSQ ‘Breaka Youth Excellence Program’, which was held over the long weekend in January. The program structure, which was constructed by a team of lifesavers handpicked from around the state, highlighted the importance and value of being a young person in Surf Life Saving. Monica Wilkie is noted for her efforts as part of the coordination team for this program as she was part of a team who developed a program to challenge the young participants mentally and socially, create opportunities to venture out of their comfort zones, gain new experiences and develop skills they could apply to other facets of their everyday lives. Sophie Gerry was a proud representative from our club and she came away from the program with loads of enthusiasm, eager eyes and a thirst to continue learning and carving a path in her new found interests within the organisation. Along with a team of likeminded young surf lifesavers, Tom Sealy was able to share his knowledge and experiences of development programs as part of the coordination team for the State Leadership Excellence Program held in Brisbane in March. After recent attendance at a number of development programs, this year the State program’s structure was turned on its head and rebuilt from the ground up. With the aid of a small experienced group of young members, Tom was able to reconstruct a program using previous programs, feedback, experiences and learning’s as the basis for his argument. The program was based upon the notion of ‘Why?’. Joel Tomasoni and

Sarah Roberts were proud ambassadors for our club as they met delegates from SLSQ, guest speakers including those from the Queensland Police Service and State Parliament as well as the ultimate challenge of ‘boot camp’ at the Enoggera Barracks. The participants graduated from the program with an increased understanding of the connections and opportunities within Surf Life Saving and abroad. We congratulate Sean Fitzgerald for his role as club ambassador at the 100th year ANZAC Day celebrations held in Gallipoli Turkey. Sean travelled to Turkey in April 2015 and joined a surfboat crew from the Burning Palms SLSC NSW to participate in a 53km surf boat race along with 34 boats crewed by other Australian and New Zealand surf lifesavers and their Turkish counterparts in the two days leading up to Anzac Day 2015 to commemorate all that had fought a 100 years before. ‘It was a most humbling and sombre experience to participate in the ANZAC Centenary Commemorations as a representative member of Mermaid AEME Surf Club. A club founded by servicemen returning from the Second World War.’ Well done Sean! The South Coast and Point Danger Branch Youth Excellence Ball was held at Bond University and was attended by twenty 15-17 year old members and four chaperons (aged 20-24years). The girls had a great time on the dance floor and the boys over stayed their welcome in the selfie booth. Sophie Gerry walked away with a Youth Excellence Award and the club was awarded runner-up Youth Development Club of the Year for South Coast Branch. The Mermaid Beach IRB Racing Team have begun competition again this season with a few new keen members. This year the club has taken the opportunity to invite a number of members from one of our sister clubs ‘Nobbys’ to train and compete with us for the IRB racing season. The goal is to assist them in developing the necessary requirements and equipment as a self-sufficient team, including training a member to be an IRB coach. This cross-pollination of club members has allowed our own members to appreciate the opportunities they have at Mermaid and given them a platform to stand up to the plate and lead the team to develop the necessary techniques and skills to become safe, confident and diligent IRB drivers and crew. This opportunity has taught our young members how to interact and build relationships through a common activity whilst maintaining respect for each other. This season we have planned, developed and implemented a ‘whole club camp’ which is a development program aimed at members from the age of 10 years and above and aims to target and develop member morale, unity, teamwork and inclusion. Our goal of the camp is to develop member’s understanding and appreciation for each other’s strengths and weaknesses and to facilitate an opportunity to motivate members to take risks – and succeed! The camp will be held externally at Murphy’s Creek Adventure Camp in late June this year. We look forward to taking 40 members away on the camp. The club has a number of awards that recognise the commitment, sacrifice and involvement of our youth members who have dedicated or performed in a particular area of the clubs operation. These awards were announced at the club annual dinner:

The Most Conscientious Youth Member of the Year – Zane Fraser U18 Young Surf Lifesaver of the Year – Hayden Slee 18 – 25 Young Surf Lifesaver of the Year – Will Nash

The Youth Development Committee works with the Club Captain each season to elect junior vice patrol captains in each patrol group. These members are selected in recognition for their continual engagement in their respective patrolling teams and are individuals who are seen to have the skills and leadership potential to step up to the role of a patrol captain in following seasons. A number of our members have had a strong, continued involvement with the investigation, research and testing of a program called 'Nipper Safe' which has been implemented by Surf Life Saving South Australia in collaboration with the South Australia Police. The program is an innovation that is about educating members to recognise certain behaviours, which are a safety

risk to children and the community in general. Education is the key to reducing the risks presented to children in our community and within our organisation and Mermaid believe that this is an initiative to which our club would like to align and be involved. As part of this program is the introduction of the role 'Chief Reporting Officer' who is a member within a surf club who has been trained to educate members of the risks that some people within our society present to children and ensuring our organisation is a safe place for kids to be. Mermaid Beach AEME SLSC continues to display interest to be part of any pilot programs instigated by Surf Life Saving Queensland in the area of member protection. As an initiative of the Youth Development Committee, the club continues to administer, through the Club Secretary, a Blue Card Administration Policy (attached) as part of our dedication and committed to the safety of our members. The policy aims to improve administration of blue cards to reduce the risk of exposure of our junior activities children and our youth members to members not holding a current blue card. Mermaid Beach AEME SLSC continues to develop towards its goal of becoming Australia’s premier Surf Life Saving club. Our members are motivated and driven towards this goal particularly in the area of development. We aim to be united with this vision, and this season has seen an increasing group of young members striving towards this goal. Mermaid’s youth programs and member engagement initiatives develop a strong, united group of members who are motivated to give every opportunity their best effort. Where there is not a pathway, we begin to etch one. Mermaid has a long-term vision of creating a club environment that unites members from across all age-categories, interests and involvement. The youth have been a large part of facilitating and fostering a close-knit family orientation club atmosphere whilst providing opportunities for each other to strive with independent development and success. We look forward to continuing to develop as a Surf Life Saving club that is nationally recognised for its development of exemplary youth members and well-equipped young Australians. A big thank-you to all club members who have been part of the lifesaving journey this season whether as active lifesavers, competitors, trainers and assessors or regular volunteers. Thanks to Greg Moreton for being a mentor this season and for offering assistance where ever required. A special thank you to Mel Gerry who has worked tirelessly towards planning the first inaugural club development program. Mel has also been a vital role in planning new initiatives that focus on the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and development of members in sport, lifesaving and development. We are proud of our successful this season and look forward to another fruitful season to come. Thanks again for the opportunity to make a difference in the area of youth development. Yours in lifesaving, Tom Sealy Youth Development Director
