Dear Friends,

The economy in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is still on track for solid growth. We are on the right path and will stay the course. The investment climate remains excellent, demonstrating the strong interest in our funding programs. As the Minister of Economics, I am particularly pleased with the number of SMEs in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern who are expanding their operations. Our companies are becoming increasingly well established in domestic and foreign markets. Invest in MV, as our state economic development agency, plays an important role in this area. Economic missions to Switzerland, Austria, and our neighbor Poland have demon- strated that there is significant interest in our state as an investment location. It is important that this work is continued and the existing contacts are strengthened.

We will be seeing several changes associated with the new EU funding period 2014 to 2020. However, I should also point out that we will still be able to offer companies a high level of support with a wide range of programs.

In the coming years, the field of technology will be a particularly significant fund- ing priority. The promotion of innovative projects involving cooperation between industry and science is a matter of great importance in our state. We are seeing a particularly strong demand for joint research projects between companies and universities, suggesting that current efforts in this area should be intensified. The aim is not only to develop innovative products but also to create sustainable jobs here in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff of Invest in MV for their great work in 2013.

And to extend an invitation to you as an investor: come and discover our state with its outstanding opportunities.

Harry GlaweMinister of Economics,Construction, andTourism Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

Fruits of Our WorkNew Businesses and Expansions

“The development of business contacts through trade fair attendance and direct outreach is necessary in order to continue creating permanent jobs for our state in the manufacturing sector. Measured in terms of the number of permanent jobs created, new investment projects are becom- ing smaller – both in Germany and in Mecklenburg- Vorpommern. This is why we want to – and will – signifi-cantly increase the number of potential investors we contact with the aim of attracting more new investment projects.“ Waldemar Hoppe, Deputy Managing Director of Invest in MV GmbH

Nestlé Deutschland AG, Schwerin Factory Foundation for Successful Production

In May 2013, the foundation stone was laid for Nestlé Deutschland’s largest invest-ment project since German Reunification. Around 200 guests, including German Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel, attended the ceremony in Schwerin to celebrate the construction of the new Nestlé factory in the Industriepark Schwerin. In the sum-mer of 2014, the factory will begin producing Nescafé Dolce Gusto capsules for Germany, Scandinavia, and Eastern Europe. The Schwerin factory will be the third European production site for Nescafé Dolce Gusto capsules.

The agency Invest in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern provided project support through- out the planning process. A total of up to 450 new jobs will be created. Once the final stage of expansion is complete, the factory will have the largest production capacity for Nescafé Dolce Gusto capsules in Europe and produce up to two billion capsules per year.

Paul Bulcke, CEO of Nestlé

“Europe is the birthplace of Nestlé. This is why we’re standing firm in our commitment to Europe in spite of the financial crisis. Our investment in the construction of a Nescafé Dolce Gusto factory in Schwerin, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, is a shining example of this commitment.“

IDT Biologika GmbH is an innovative medium-sized company in the life sciences sector. The Dessau-based company was founded in 1921. Since then, it has special- ized in the fields of human vaccines, animal health, and pharmaceuticals. In Novem-ber 2013, IDT Biologika acquired the Animal Health division of RIEMSER Pharma GmbH, which is located on the island of Riems near the Hanseatic city of Greifs- wald. The company also took over the production facility there. This facility now mainly produces vaccines for veterinary medicine. Short-term plans include site ex-

pansion and investment in the establishment of a research and development center. In the long term, the company intends to create further high-value jobs at the Vorpommern site. With this new investment, the Greifswald region has strength- ened its already impressive reputation in the life sciences sector. Invest in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern provided support and guidance to IDT throughout the entire planning process.

Prolupin GmbHSuccessful Alternatives

IDT Biologika GmbHStrengthening the Greifswald Region

Prolupin GmbH was founded as a spin-off of the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging IVV in Freising and has since become a major success story for Fraunhofer Venture. In 2011, the company launched its non-dairy ice cream “Lupinesse” on the market. It is now being success- fully distributed by several sales partners. The product is also gaining importance on the national market: up to 20 percent of Germans suffer from lactose intolerance, the inability to digest the sugar found in dairy products. However, milk contains many nutrients that are important for the human body. The nutrients found in blue lupine seeds can serve as a nutritional substitute. Prolupin GmbH is a pioneer in the processing of this high-protein legume. In August 2013, following a period of trial production at a pilot site in Neubrandenburg, the company opened a production facility in Grimmen. A total of 13 jobs were created. The state-of-the-art facility is able to process 2,500 metric tons of lupines per year.

PROCAP Schwerin GmbHA Good Strategy

PROCAP is a leading European player in the production of plastic closures and caps for containers of solid and liquid foodstuffs, chemicals, cosmetics, and phar-maceutical products. The company is planning a new production facility at the Industriepark Schwerin. In April of 2013, PROCAP acquired the Schwerin-based company Schoeller Cap Systems. Its production lines will now be moved to the Industriepark Schwerin. Other companies with facilities at this industrial park include the aerospace supplier FlammAerotec, the automotive supplier PTS Preci-sion, and Nestlé, with a coffee-capsule plant. Invest in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern provided support and guidance throughout the planning process.

Harry Briese, Managing Director of PROCAP Schwerin GmbH

“The new site in Schwerin fits perfectly into PROCAP’s business strategy. In the future, we’d like to supply our products to customers in Northern Germany, Scandi- navia, and the other Baltic Rim countries.“

Deutsche Ölwerke Lubmin GmbHA Promising Manufacturing Facility

Deutsche Ölwerke Lubmin GmbH manufactures engine oils and lubricants – primarily for the automotive and mechanical engineering industries. In September 2013, the company celebrated the opening of its new production facility in Lubmin. The 33,500 m² (360,600 sq. ft.) plant was successfully commissioned after a five-year planning and construction phase. A total of 26 direct jobs were created. Invest in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern worked closely with Deutsche Ölwerke Lubmin GmbH, providing support and assistance for the investment project. One important factor in the company’s decision for Lubmin was the optimal logistics situation: the port access and rail connection allow for the transport of large loads.

Sweet Tec GmbHSteady Growth

Founded in 2004, the Boizenburg-based Sweet Tec GmbH produces compressed and deposited hard candies, lolli-pops, chewy candies, and toffee products – primarily as a full-service manufacturer for commercial and indus-trial customers. Sweet Tec is now planning to expand its facility, which will allow it to enter the market for jelly confectionary and fruit gum candies. This expansion will not only secure the existing jobs but also create 100 new direct jobs. Invest in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is pro-viding the company with support and guidance for this investment project. Sweet Tec operates a highly innovative facility with a combined heat and power unit that meets all of the company’s heating requirements and part of its electricity requirements. Its managing director, Oliver Schindler, also serves as an official economic ambassador for the state, helping pro-mote the business and investment location Mecklenburg- Vorpommern.

Location Marketing TargetsPriority Countries and Industries

“In the context of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), Invest in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern received funding from the Ministry of Economics, Construction, and Tourism Mecklenburg-Vorpommern for the period 2012 to 2015. These additional financial resources are being used for expanding our location-marketing efforts. Numerous measures in the areas of location advertising, event marketing, and direct marketing have already been implemented. Many others are currently underway or in planning. For its targeted investor outreach activities, Invest in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern focuses on certain countries and industries. Priority sectors include the food industry and life sciences. Poland, Russia, Turkey, Austria, and Switzerland are being prioritized as particularly promising countries.“

Promoting Growth, Maximizing OpportunitiesThe ERDF Funding Program

Raising Our Profile Throughout EuropeCampaigns for Our State

ERDF funding for the period 2012 to 2015 has enabled Invest in MV to carry out many location marketing activities that would otherwise not have been possible. Experience from the first half of the project period has shown that the additional pro-jects can further enhance value added. The number of jobs that have been created also illustrates the positive effect of the funding program on new investment in our state. The success is measurable: since 2012, the total number of projects generated has in-creased by 29 percent through the work of the three new project managers and the implementation of additional campaigns and activities. Eight projects have already been successfully completed. The strategy of focusing on priority sectors and coun-

tries has paid off. Our ERDF program is also aimed at promoting economic devel- opment in the Eastern parts of the state. In 2012, Invest in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern opened a new office in Greifswald. Now, 40 percent of the site and company visits originate in the state’s Eastern regions.

The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)

The first objective of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) concerns the improvement of conditions for growth and development. Under this objective, the ERDF focuses its assistance on supporting future-oriented investments in the fields of research, technological development, innovation, trade, industry, and public infrastructure.

Dr. Stefan Rudolph, Vice Minister of the Ministry

of Economics, Construction, and Tourism Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

“I have had the pleasure of traveling to Istanbul on two occasions and speaking with Turkish businessmen and -women, as well as people from Istanbul and Izmir. My impressions of the people and the country were very moving. In the meetings, I learned that Turkish investors have a very high opinion of Germany as a business loca- tion. I also discovered that Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is still viewed as a ‘diamond in the rough’. We can build on this positive reputation and do further outreach for the location MV.“

Marc Landau, Managing Director of AHK Türkei

“Since the founding of the German-Turkish Chamber of Commerce and Industry twenty years ago, the Turkish economy has steadily improved, as have the economic relations between Germany and Turkey. The basic premises for continued economic growth are still very good. The innovative potential of the Turkish economy is growing by leaps and bounds. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is located near several markets that are important for Turkish companies, which makes the state attractive for Turkish investors. Invest in MV offers the necessary local expertise in this area. We are working closely with Invest in MV to provide investors with optimal conditions for a successful entry into the market.“

Events and MeetingsIn 2013, investor outreach in Turkey was a special area of focus for Invest in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The experience in this area proved very positive. In the context of the ERDF country focus on Turkey, Invest in Mecklenburg- Vorpommern visited both of the WIN – World of Industry fairs in Istanbul, which are among the leading industrial trade fairs in the Eur- asian economic area. At these events, the state economic development agency had several interesting meetings and discussions. The highlight of the Turkey activities was a four-day business mission in June 2013 accompanied by the Minister President of the State of Mecklenburg- Vorpommern, Erwin Sellering, and the Vice Minister of the Ministry of Economics, Construction, and Tourism of the State of Mecklenburg- Vorpommern, Dr. Stefan Rudolph. Two additional missions were organ- ized on the basis of successful trade-fair meetings and led by Vice Minister Dr. Stefan Rudolph. Both resulted in new projects with great potential.

Turkey as Key Economic PartnerProjects with Potential

In 2014, the activities in Turkey will be further expanded. These will include visits to trade fairs with targeted meetings, as well as two roadshows. The aim is to conduct direct outreach to companies interested in expansion. Invest in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will also be taking part in special events for investors. For the scheduling of valuable meetings, the agency is working closely with the German-Turkish Chamber of Commerce and Industry (AHK Türkei). For example, the AHK magazine ODA published a letter and a report from Vice Minister Dr. Stefan Rudolph on the invest-ment location Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Strong Interest in Germany as Investment LocationExperience from trade fairs and business missions has shown that many Turkish com-panies are interested in Germany as an investment location. When it comes to convin-cing Turkish companies of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s locational advantages, direct outreach in Turkey is an essential element. Invest in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is cur-rently working with several Turkish investors who have expressed interest in expanding to the business location Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. These potential investors include large Turkish companies from the plastics, food, medical technology, and mechanical engineering industries.

Promising ContactsThe year 2013 brought many interesting, new experiences for Invest in Mecklenburg- Vorpommern with its neighbor Poland. On October 3, a delegation from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern visited Warsaw to attend festivities commemorating the Day of German Unity. The delegation was led by Minister President Erwin Sellering and the Minister of Economics, Construction, and Tourism of the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Harry Glawe. Together with representatives from Invest in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Minister Glawe also met potential Polish investors.

Building upon these positive contacts, another delegation will be visiting the ITM Polska in Poznań in 2014. The ITM is one of the largest engineering trade fairs in Eastern Europe. In addition, two roadshows will focus on direct outreach to inves- tors. This outreach strategy is necessary because there are relatively few trade fairs in Poland. Invest in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern also plans to actively participate in investor events in Poland.

Focus on PolandDirect Outreach to Potential Investors

Great PotentialThe results of the Warsaw visit have shown that, among Polish companies, there is a great interest in Germany as an investment location. The prospect of expan-sion to Germany is attractive to Polish investors for a number of reasons, e. g. the proximity to German customers and the positive image of the label “Made in Germany.” The fact that Mecklenburg-Vorpommern shares a border with Poland is only one of its many locational advantages.

Polish investors are also attracted by the abundance of undeveloped areas in the state that are both inexpensive and readily available. Currently, Invest in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is providing project support for several Polish inves- tors with concrete interests in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

A Successful Follow-UpIn August 2013, a delegation from Lower Austria visited Mecklenburg- Vorpommern as a follow-up to the activities undertaken in 2012. The trip was led by Dr. Petra Bohuslav, Regional Minister for Economic Affairs, Tourism, and Sport, Lower Austria, with the aim of strength- ening cooperation between the two states. Invest in Mecklenburg- Vorpommern presented its business location in northeastern Germany to the Austrian industry representatives. Several cooperation agree-ments were signed. For example, the tourism associations and health-care sectors are planning to cooperate more closely in the future. Harry Glawe, Minister of Economics, Construction, and Tourism of the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, hosted a business lunch in February 2013 in the context of a visit to the EWEA 2013 (European Wind Energy Association) conference and trade show in Vienna. During the lunch, Minister Glawe gave a presentation to potential inves- tors, highlighting the locational advantages offered by Mecklenburg- Vorpommern. At the EWEA event, Invest in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern organized a joint stand, together with the Wind Energy Network and several companies from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. In April 2013, the agency Germany Trade & Invest (GTAI) also hosted a

AustriaStrengthening Cooperation

reception in Vienna entitled “Austria and Germany: Strong Partnerships for Strong Business Success – Opportunities for Austrian Companies in Eastern Germany.” At this event, the loca- tional advantages of the eastern federal states were presented jointly. Following the presentation, Invest in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern spoke with all of the companies who attended.

Interesting Priority CountryAustria is still very interesting as a priority country for Invest in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Owing to an economic structure similar to that of Germany, it has been largely unaffected by the economic crisis. As a result, many companies have an interest in establishing locations in other countries, as well as the necessary capital. Close contacts already exist with the state of Lower Austria. These contacts will be strengthened in the future. One challenge is the investment backlog that has developed over the past few years.

“Germany and Austria have a unique relationship. We are connected by our language, culture, history, and a common border. For its size, no other country has a higher level of bilateral economic exchange with Germany. The individual states also cooperate closely. Mecklenburg- Vorpommern maintains an outstanding and exemplary partnership with Lower Austria and other states. Through these ties, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has succeeded in marketing itself as Germany’s gateway to Northern Europe and, accordingly, as an especially interesting business loca- tion, also for Austrian investors.“

Detlev Rünger, German Ambassador to Vienna

Ralf J. Bopp, Director of AHK Schweiz

“The economic relations between Germany and Switzerland are close and important. Not only for the small neighbor, but also for the large one. Over the past decades, the relatively similar econo-mic structures and economic policy orientations of the two highly industrialized countries, as well as their geographical proximity, have led to the development of robust trade relations, bilateral direct investment, and a flourishing tourism industry on both sides. Swiss and German companies are securing their market positions in the relevant sectors of the neighboring country, with a total of around 2,000 subsidiaries, production facilities, and sales subsidiaries on each side of the border. There are also Swiss companies operating in Mecklenburg- Vorpommern. Nestlé is certainly the largest of these but by no means the only one. Thanks to the work of the regional economic development agencies, the economic cooperation between Switzerland and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will continue to increase.“

Strong PresenceSwitzerland ranks among the most competitive economies in the world. In response to current political developments, an increas- ing number of Swiss companies are considering expansion into other countries. Swiss-based Nestlé, one of the world’s largest companies, chose Mecklenburg-Vorpommern as the location for a new production facility. In order to leverage the Nestlé project to attract additional investment, regional economic development agencies maintained a strong presence at trade fairs in Switzerland. A total of three trade fairs were attended: Igeho, Mefa, and Lefatec. These are among the leading Swiss trade fairs for gastronomy, catering, and food production.

An ad was printed in the newspaper Schweiz am Sonntag in order to promote Mecklenburg-Vorpommern as an investment loca-tion. The Schweiz am Sonntag is one of the highest-circulation German-language Sunday newspapers in Switzerland. The ad was placed right beside a report on Swiss companies investing in Eastern Germany. This provided an optimal context for the creation of synergies. Intensive marketing for the business location Mecklenburg- Vorpommern was carried out in cooperation with the German- Swiss Chamber of Commerce (AHK Schweiz). In the AHK

SwitzerlandLeveraging Positive Outcomes

Schweiz magazine, CH-D Wirtschaft, a total of 16 pages have been dedi-cated to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. In the November 2012 edition, which was published just before the investor event Apéro – articles from political representatives and business leaders covered several topics, such as the food industry, wind energy, logistics, and Swiss companies in Mecklenburg- Vorpommern. Subsequently, Invest in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern was fea- tured on the cover of the March 2013 edition of the Chamber’s magazine. An accompanying article addressed the food industry and life sciences in northeastern Germany.

Strong Financial PositionMany Swiss companies have the financial resources for undertaking expansion projects in other countries. The aim is to make contact with companies interested in expanding and to convince them of the benefits of investing in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Swiss companies, like their German counterparts, place a high value on quality. The subject of the new Nestlé facility has become a successful door-opener and is attracting strong interest from potential investors, strengthening the effectiveness of location marketing for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Economically Attractive RussiaDemand for German Know-How

Prof. Andrey Zverev, Head of the Trade and

Economy Bureau of the Russian Federation Embassy

“The German business community is a traditional and reliable partner for Russia. Trade and econo-mic relations between Germany and Russia have existed for more than ninety years. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is already one of Russia’s most important partners for export and investment. Our cooperation has a solid founda-tion that can nevertheless be further strength- ened – for the benefit of both sides. In the future, we will continue to expand the existing trade and economic relations and look forward to a successful cooperation.“

The maritime exhibition NEVA 2013 was held in St. Petersburg in September 2013. Invest in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Rostock Business coordinated the exhibi-tors from our state for the German Pavilion of the trade exhibition. The 37-member delegation was accompanied by the Minister of Economics, Construction, and Tour- ism of the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Harry Glawe. There were several events with Russian participants. These included a workshop on the maritime indus-try, round-table talks on health tourism, and a workshop on the healthcare industry. Parallel to these events, several articles were published in the magazine Ost-West-Contact in Russian to promote Mecklenburg-Vorpommern as an investment loca-tion. Minister Glawe invited the official representatives of the Leningrad Oblast, as well as representatives from Russian companies, to attend the 2014 National Health Management Industry Conference in Warnemünde from May 21 to 22. The delegation members who took part in the NEVA trade fair as exhibitors were very positive about the results. In Russia, there is a great demand for German know-how. The state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will be presenting itself again at the next NEVA trade fair in 2015.

35

“The agency still uses national and international trade fairs and conventions, and increasingly also trade-only and specialized fairs, as ideal opportunities for making direct contact with corporate decision-makers. When all goes well, these contacts can lead to successful investment projects. For years now, Germany has been the world’s number-one location for trade fairs and conventions.“

“In my opinion, the trade fair was very profession- al, goal-oriented, and down to earth. The issue of sustainability is very important in this context, not only with respect to production methods but also in terms of the establishment of long-term contacts. All of the meetings are constructive, and the people we meet with are very open-minded and interested in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The companies here are familiar with the importance of our state as a location for outstanding organic quality.“

Talking Business in a Relaxed Atmosphere

Fifth Summer Reception of Invest in MV GmbHSchwerin, May 16, 2013 In May of 2013, Invest in Mecklenburg Vorpommern GmbH invited economic ambassadors, business leaders, municipal representatives, regional business developers, and guests to its traditional Summer Reception under the patronage of the Minister of Economics, Construction, and Tourism of the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Harry Glawe. The “Beach Chair Talk” sparked intense discussions on the subject of “More Loca-tion Marketing for Value-Creating Investment Projects by New,

Relocating, and Expanding Companies” – especially with re-spect to the funding that is expiring in 2013.There were three rounds of talks covering the special target markets of Russia and Switzerland, as well as the issue of leading- edge technology in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Another high-light of the event was the award ceremony honoring Wismar as “Germany’s Most Investor-Friendly City.” This award was presented to Thomas Beyer, Mayor of the Hanseatic City of Wismar, by the Head of the Trade and Economy Bureau of the Russian Federation Embassy in Berlin, Prof. Zverev, and the Minister of Economics, Construction, and Tourism of the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Harry Glawe. In addition, three business representatives were awarded the title of “economic ambassador” by Minister Glawe. Their “mission” will be to promote Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in Germany and abroad. Subsequently, many topics were discussed with other guests at a barbecue. Roughly 200 guests attended the event.

Hanse Sail 2013, Rostock-WarnemündeOn the weekend of Hanse Sail in August 2013, 400 guests met for the Sail Brunch in the context of the business promotion and networking event “Business meets Hanse Sail.” The well-known event, which was held for the 10th time in 2013, brought together decision-makers, entrepreneurs, respected members of industry and politics, and other high-caliber guests. The high-light was a panel discussion moderated by Erwin Sellering, Minister President of the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, with representatives of leading German companies. The topic was “A Discussion with the Minister President: The Challenge of Finding Qualified Employees – Companies and Regions Compete for the Brightest Minds.” The panel included Dr. Huber-tine Underberg-Ruder, President of the Supervisory Board of Underberg AG (Dietlikon/Zurich), Carsten Doehring, Managing Director of Ilim Timber Europe GmbH (Landsberg am Lech, Germany), which also has a facility in Wismar, Michael Ungerer, President of AIDA Cruises (Rostock), and Steffen Himstedt, Managing Director of Trebing & Himstedt Prozessautomation GmbH & Co. KG (Schwerin). “Business meets Hanse Sail” is made possible through support from strong partners. “Cooperation with our regional partners is very important to us. When it comes to attracting and supporting new investment projects, local expertise and regional networking often play a decisive role. Regular meetings ensure that all agencies are familiar with current investment-promotion pa-rameters and allow for the exchange of information between regions. Invest in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern attends select trade fairs together with regional economic development agencies. Our partners are also involved in the meetings with potential investors that take place at the trade fairs on a daily basis.“

Meetings of the RegionalDevelopment Agencies of MVStrengthening Cooperation

Regular meetings between the economic development agencies of the state are the basis for effective cooperation. Joint projects, such as the “Invest Guide,” strengthen the advisory services for the offered sites and help ensure that the development agencies are able to offer the relevant expertise. In 2013, Invest in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, together with regional and net-work partners, once again attended jointly organized trade fairs and events in Germany and abroad. Invest in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern also hosted various events, including meetings focused on ERDF funding or the organi- zation of planned activities. At two informational events organized under the patronage of Minister of Economics, Construction, and Tourism Mecklenburg-

Vorpommern Harry Glawe in the Hanseatic cities of Stralsund and Rostock, region- al partners were briefed on several issues, including current changes in the funding parameters of the Joint Task “Improvement of Regional Economic Structure” (GRW).State Councilor Andreas Rieckhof gave a presentation on the Hamburg Metropolitan Region. The meetings of economic development agencies have demonstrated that close cooper- ation with the development agencies of the districts and independent cities is very important and should therefore be maintained.

Press and Public RelationsUsing a Variety of Media

Press Reports: Keeping Communication Channels OpenIn 2013, Invest in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern continued to share information on current events and activities through regular press releases. In addition, so-called “Advertorials” were used for presenting certain industries in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in profession- al journals. For example, an article on the new facilities of the companies biosanica and Prolupin appeared in the publication AMV Report – on the occasion of the Anuga trade fair – in cooperation with the Economic Development Corporation Vorpommern. In 2012, a comprehensive report on Mecklenburg-Vorpommern was published in CH-D Wirtschaft, the magazine of the German-Swiss Chamber of Commerce (AHK Schweiz). This magazine was used as a marketing platform for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in 2013 as well. In the magazine Ost-West-Contact, articles were published on the healthcare and shipbuilding industries in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in the context of the ERDF priority region Baltic.

Ads: Targeted MarketingThe most recent successes of Invest in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with regard to attracting new investment to the region have further strengthened the industrial sector of our state. It is important that the positive outcomes of this new investment be leveraged in the near future for communicating the locational advantages of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern to target groups for all parts of the state. Ads are used for increasing awareness of the business location. In the context of the ERDF project, a series of ads were placed in national and international trade journals as part of an intensive advertising campaign. An ad was also placed near an article on Swiss companies in Eastern Germany that appeared in a special edition of the newspaper Schweiz am Sonntag focused on the federal elections in Germany.

Promotional Movies: Showcasing Industries In 2013, promotional movies were made for the manufacturing, food, and life sciences industries. These movies highlight the strengths of each industry and are used for informational, mar-keting, and promotional purposes, e.g. investor outreach. Film is an excellent medium for providing a general and entertaining overview of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern as a business location. The movies’ protagonists are often better able to present the loca-tional advantages than a live speaker giving a presentation. And moving images add great credibility. Invest in Mecklenburg- Vorpommern uses these promotional movies on a daily basis for various purposes.

The agency will concentrate primarily on the food, healthcare, environmental technology, mechanical engineering, manu-facturing, and plastics industries.“

Project terminology: The term contact refers to an initial exploratory talk with an in-terested company representative in the context of planning for a trade-fair visit or event. During the contact phase, the company is not expected to make any commitment regarding a possible invest-ment project in MV.

A lead goes beyond this initial contact. An initial meeting has al-ready taken place at a trade fair or event. The potential investor is considering Mecklenburg-Vorpommern as a possible business location. General and/or industry-specific site information has been provided in person or sent to the company following the visit. The potential investor still cannot – or prefers not to – describe the possible investment project in greater detail.

In the case of a project, a project description, business requirement specification, or business plan is submitted by the potential investor. On the basis of these documents, a list of appropriate sites is prepared in accordance with the site criteria specified by the company. Site visits and meetings are organized individually (site, employment agency, ministries, government agencies). Applications for funding through the Joint Task “Improvement of Regional Economic Structure” (GRW) are prepared by the potential investor or have already been submitted to the Federal State Institute for Public Funding (LFI).
