Principal’s Introduction

The details contained in the following Report covers information required by the Victorian Registration & Qualifications Authority (VRQA) to be submitted annually and the key reporting areas relating to school performance required by the Australian Government to be made publicly available to the School and wider communities in the prescribed formats. At Chairo Christian School, we always have a strong desire to ensure that our School community is kept fully informed about our School programs and performance. This is in line with our School Mission Statement which reads – “To provide excellence in Christ-centred education in partnership with families within a caring Christian community”. As ‘partners’ in the educational process, our parents are greatly valued and we wish to maintain effective communication with them at all times. We do this through a variety of methods including our School Newsletter (The Chronicle); via the School website; through SMS and email messages; through telephone conversations, personal interviews, surveys and direct mail outs. Similarly we see this report as providing a further vehicle to highlight useful contextual information about the type of education that occurs at a Christian Education National School (previously known as Christian Parent Controlled Schools) such as Chairo Christian School. Relevant aims, programs and distinctive educational features will be referred to later in this report. This report provides key performance and statistical data as well as highlighting some of the major events of 2011 at Chairo Christian School. As you read through these pages, I trust that you will be greatly encouraged by the continual growth and development that has occurred at our School. 2011 marked another busy year in the life of our School. It was a year where enrolments remained steady and where there was a continuation of our building program. These aspects should foster a sense of great confidence within our Chairo community about the on-going health of our School. Please carefully read through the pages of this report. I am confident that they will provide you with a clear and accurate overview of the major events and programs that occurred at Chairo Christian School in 2011. This informative report will specifically cover the areas of staffing and student performance in National and State Testing Programs, with a close focus on Senior School student performance and post-secondary destinations. The data provided indicates that Chairo Christian School is providing ‘Christ-centred’ education that meets the needs of our students. It also prepares them to confidently head out into the wider community with the required skills and abilities to make a productive contribution to their society.

1. Contextual Information As previously stated, Chairo Christian School is a Christian Education National (CEN) School and membership of this national organisation of like-minded Christian schools forms an essential part of our identity. Chairo Christian School is located on three geographically separate sites. In 2011, we had campuses at Pakenham (Pre-Kinder -Year 10); Drouin (Middle School: Years 5-8 and Senior School: Years 9-12) and Drouin East (Junior School: Pre-Kinder –Year 4). Note: Our Pakenham Campus has now received VRQA registration to commence Year 11 VCE in 2013. Chairo’s two Early Learning Centres cater for the special developmental needs of young children through the provision of 3 and 4 Year Old Kindergarten programs. Our Junior Schools provide intimate learning centres for children from Prep to Year 4. Chairo operates two Middle Schools which cater for the special learning needs of the ‘emerging adolescent’ from Year 5 to Year 8. Senior School encompasses the vital period from Year 9 to Year 12. Senior School provides a broad choice of VCE subjects with some VET offerings. As of the 2011 August Census, Chairo Christian School had 1027 students enrolled from Prep – Year 12 across our three campuses. The student population is drawn from a widely spread geographic region. Chairo students come from as far away as Traralgon and surrounding regions in the East through to Narre Warren in the West. Due to the rural locations of the three campuses, students predominately arrive at school via buses or private vehicles. Chairo Christian School caters for students from a diverse range of backgrounds. The families of many students are involved in rural occupations such as dairying and horticulture, with many also living in rural townships. However, the Pakenham growth corridor sees many of our students coming from urban backgrounds. Many of these families have themselves only recently relocated to the Pakenham area as the population rapidly expands. Whilst the majority of students come from Christian families, enrolments are also accepted from families with no church affiliations who are supportive of the ethos of the School. Chairo serves the needs of families from a wide variety of socio-economic backgrounds. The 2011 My School website indicated that Chairo draws its student intake fairly evenly from across the four Index of Community Socio-Educational Advantage quartiles. All activities and programs at Chairo Christian School are delivered from a Christian Worldview perspective. This means that Christian perspectives are integrated throughout the whole curriculum rather than being added as a separate subject. Staff participate in professional development programs which equip them to teach Christianly. Chairo Christian School continues to provide a vibrant K-12 curriculum with academic outcomes comparing very favourably with statistically similar schools across the nation and VCE results also comparing favourably with the Victorian state average.

Teaching and Learning priorities and achievements (2011):

Mr Peter Wells, our Deputy Principal (Teaching and Learning), has provided the following information in relation to how our Teaching and Learning Programs operated throughout 2011: Chairo Christian School exists to provide excellence in Christ-centred education. The following

information should provide an overview of significant developments that occurred throughout 2011:

2011 was a conference year for the Victorian Christian Education National Schools. This meant all our

teaching staff attended seminars with their colleagues in Christian Education from all over the state.

Several used the conference as a component of ongoing Master of Education studies; enhancing their depth

of insight regarding biblically-based education. It was a year of significant investment in Christian

Worldview professional development with selected teachers, leaders and board members attending an

Page 5: Annual Report 2011 Chairo Christian School Victoria

5

international Christian Education academic symposium and conference held in Darwin. There is no doubt

that connecting with other people who share a passion for Christ-centred education inspires us and refines

the way we manage Chairo Christian School.

Chairo has the opportunity to benefit from the input of education consultants through the National

Partnerships program run by Independent Schools Victoria. One of the significant developments here has

been Evidence Based Observation. This is rigorous method of observing teacher behaviours and focusing

on specific improvements that can be made to classroom practice. Some teachers have been trained in the

observation techniques and many staff have received the coaching feedback that will improve our teaching

effectiveness.

Steady progress has been made in the world of Information Technology. Significant infrastructure

upgrades occurred including expanding our wireless capability and better managing our servers. These are

the sorts of background developments that build capacity for IT developments that benefit students. One of

the significant developments was a trial of iPads for learning in Middle School classroom resulting in

widespread enthusiasm for the move to personal learning devices. Further progress has been made with

moving all campuses towards providing academic reports through the TASS software. This process should

be completed during 2012.

Chairo’s academic results in 2011 were, once again, very pleasing. The median study score for our VCE

students held at the same level as in 2010, and once again exceeded the Victorian State average (Chairo

median score = 31 vs. Victorian median score = 30). This enabled many of our students to enter their

preferred courses in the first round of offers, including two students who received scholarships to

Swinburne University for their outstanding achievements. There were similarly pleasing outcomes from our

NAPLAN testing, with our students’ results across all the assessment areas at Years 3,5, 7 and 9 matching

or exceeding national benchmarks in 17 out of 20 categories.

2011 saw the development of the CLAY Biblical Character program that was launched at the Association’s

General Meeting. This is a whole-school topical approach to teaching Biblical principles of living a life of

Godly character. The General Meeting also featured the launch of the publication “Psalms of Chairo”; a

compilation of God-honouring poetry and photography from the School community.

Our music program continued to expand at Pakenham Campus with the development of the School band

and extra-curricular performing arts opportunities were available in the School productions. In 2011 these

were “Barnum” at Pakenham, and “Out There!” and “His Story, His glory” at Drouin. Chairo was

announced as the outright winner of the Gippsland Independent Schools Cultural Festival in 2011. Our PE

and sports teachers continue to provide a diverse program that promotes skill development and

participation as well as opportunities for representative teams and individuals to compete at a very high

level. Chairo has enjoyed considerable success in the Gippsland Independent Schools competition, the

Christian Schools Sporting Network, as well as other sporting associations. Successful camping

experiences were conducted from Year 3-Year 12 and students’ learning is enriched by a range of

excursions and special events.

If you flick through the ‘Outlook’ School magazine, you see the incredible diversity of educational

experiences at Chairo. In any given week, it is possible to see something special happening in the life of the

School; perhaps a medieval feast, or a Year 10 formal. It may be an energy-efficient vehicle race, or a

Book Week. It could be showing sheep at the Melbourne Show, or a swimming carnival. We are really

blessed to have our children surrounded by so many wonderful and stimulating ways to learn.

Mission and Community Service Programs:

These areas continue to be distinctive features of the programs offered at Chairo. Students of all ages are encouraged to develop a mission and service focus whereby they actively seek opportunities to serve other groups within our local and wider communities. This aspect represents a logical outworking of our Christian Worldview approach to teaching and learning. The words of Jesus Christ state that ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ (Acts 20:35(b)) and through numerous programs, such as our Service Week, Chairo students are encouraged to actively assist those in the community who are less fortunate than themselves.

Page 6: Annual Report 2011 Chairo Christian School Victoria

6

Our Student Senates and Student Representative Council (SRC) are also actively involved in fundraising events for worthy community organisations. In 2011 they participated in a wide range of community service activities including:

• The Pakenham Senate organised a 40 Hour Famine group – they held a sleep-over at School to support each other as they went through the 40 Hour Famine to raise money for World Vision. The Senate also helped organise, collect and count money for the ‘Turn on the Tap’ project run by Samaritan’s Purse. Students also volunteered their time to help in the Junior School on a regular basis and some time was spent at the 4C’s Food Bank to assist with the needs in the local community. A Casual Clothes ‘Tropical Shirt’ Day was held in order to raise funds for a school in the Philippines to buy educational supplies.

• The SRC at Middle School, Drouin used the funds raised from their Casual Clothes Days to support the following organisations:

o the work of the Patchett family in Ethiopia; o the provision of funds for the purchase of school equipment for the Hohidiai school in

Indonesia; o donations of food stuffs that were delivered to the West Gippsland Food Bank for

distribution amongst families in need within the Baw Baw Shire.

• The Drouin Senior School Senate raises funds through holding a Casual Clothes Day each term. In 2011 funds were raised to support Hohidiai School in Indonesia and Hebron School in India. Funds were also raised to pay for the transport of Samaritan’s Purse shoeboxes to needy children overseas.

Once again, Chairo staff and students were involved in the Darwin Mission Trip. This is the fourth consecutive year that we have sent a team to participate in this seventeen day program. Students and staff received three intensive days of training provided by Youth With a Mission (YWAM) before heading to Beswick, a remote aboriginal community located near Katherine in the Northern Territory. This program provides excellent opportunities for our students to form strong friendships with the community and to learn more about the land and the aboriginal culture.

Camps and Excursions:

Students at Chairo Christian School are privileged to be involved in a wide variety of stimulating experiences that take them well beyond the classroom. Many of these events have a focus on healthy outdoor educational activities. The programs are designed to be age-appropriate with the duration and challenges of the activities increasing as children move to higher year levels.

Pastoral Care:

Chairo places a high priority on its welfare and pastoral care programs. All teachers at Chairo play an active role in attending to the pastoral care needs of our students. To assist in this task, Chairo is fortunate to have had the services of two chaplains. Chairo chaplains have been actively involved in a variety of programs and service provision across all three Chairo campuses. They assist in areas such as staff and student devotions, chapel and special services and assemblies and attend camps and excursions as appropriate. They are also regularly involved in personal interviews with students, parents and staff as required. In late 2011 the decision was made to expand Chairo’s Chaplaincy program to include the services of three part-time chaplains. We believe that this will better serve the pastoral needs of the Chairo School community. Sporting Activities:

Chairo students are regularly engaged in a wide variety of sporting activities. Once again in 2011, students have been involved in sports at House, Inter-School and Interstate levels. Chairo is affiliated with numerous sporting bodies and, as a strongly growing school, our sporting achievements are flourishing. We are involved in a range of sporting organisations including the Gippsland Independent Schools Sports Association (GIS); Christian Schools Sporting Network (CSSN); Tarago Sports; West Gippsland Division Sporting Association; Pakenham Schools District and Zone Competitions; Inter-School Equestrian

Competitions; Victorian Schools Futsal Tournament (‘Futsal’ is like indoor soccer, except the court is larger, the goals are larger and there is no rebounding off the walls/sides); and the International Netball Competition at Jells Park. Timetabled Sport and Physical Education sessions on a weekly basis continue to be an integral part of our curriculum.

Cultural and Community Events: Students throughout the School are strongly encouraged to participate in a variety of cultural events that occur at both House and Inter-School levels. These include areas such as Chess, Theatre Sports, Public Speaking and Debating, Music and Dance. Many students and staff choose to be involved in the various School Productions that occur at each of our campuses, usually on an annual basis. Many hours of dedication and commitment are put into the rehearsals to ensure the successful presentation of these events. In 2011 Drouin Senior School students for the first time presented a Variety Concert entitled ‘Out There!’. ‘Barnum, the Musical’ was the title of the School Production presented by Middle and Senior School students from our Pakenham Campus. The Drouin East Junior School students presented ‘His Story…..His Glory’ and each Junior School grade at the Pakenham Campus provided a colourful musical item at their Presentation Evening. On behalf of the wider Chairo community, I would wish to congratulate staff and students for their willingness to use their gifts and talents in such a creative manner. Our ‘Artsmartz’ Exhibition was, once again, held at the Old Drouin Butter Factory. This was an evening where VCE students from the Arts and Technology areas displayed and showcased their work. There were performances by the Unit 2 Theatre Studies students and fine food was provided by the Unit 4 Food Technology Class. Visitors were able to look through student folios and admire a variety of art and technology products. Chairo students continue to participate enthusiastically in a range of community events. These include activities such as the Drouin Ficifolia Parade, which is held in February of each year and which sees our School entering a float, colorfully decorated according to each year’s theme. In 2011 the theme was ‘The Stars Come to Drouin’. Many students, especially from our Drouin East Junior School, are actively involved in this parade. Another community event where Chairo students represent our School is the annual ANZAC Day ceremonies. Chairo students lay wreaths in memory of fallen soldiers at a number of these ceremonies. Chairo staff and students continue to be represented at the four day Farm World event held each year at Lardner Park.

Student Leadership Programs: At Chairo Christian School we place great emphasis on training our students to become effective leaders. We believe that every student has leadership abilities. We deliberately aim to seek out leadership training programs that are designed specifically with Christian students in mind. These leadership skills are invaluable assets to our School community and one day will be of great benefit to the wider society as Chairo students graduate from our School. 2011 was another year that saw many key student leadership training initiatives taking place. In 2011 CEN and CSA, the two major Christian Schools organisations in Australia, announced a major new initiative for the training of Christian student leaders. This three day leadership program was held at the Phillip Island Adventure Resort in February. Some 69 young Christian student leaders from approximately eighteen Christian schools throughout Victoria were in attendance. Chairo Christian School had four students who participated, drawn from our Drouin and Pakenham campuses. There was a great variety of activities presented across the three days including devotion sessions, music and singing, walks on the beach and a range of electives including topics such as ‘Planning a successful activity’, ‘Leading devotions and leading others’ and ‘Balancing priorities as a leader.’ In January of 2011, Chairo again sent its two Year 12 Senior School Captains from 2010 to participate in the ‘Compass’ Christian Student Leadership Training Program. This training program is a national initiative organised by the Australian Christian Lobby and is held annually in Brisbane. (This is the fourth year that Chairo students have participated.) It aims to equip young people to be effective Christian leaders as they prepare to leave Secondary School to enter the wider world of work and tertiary training.

Page 8: Annual Report 2011 Chairo Christian School Victoria

8

This year Chairo again partnered with ‘Cornerstone Community Inc’, a Christian organisation that is active in training Christian student leaders. The one week program occurs in Swan Hill and is aimed at Years 9/10 students. The intention is to equip these students with the leadership skills required to make them effective student leaders in their own school communities for the final 2-3 years of their Secondary School education. In 2011 Chairo sent four students, two each from our Drouin and Pakenham campuses. Our students also participated in a number of leadership programs that are not necessarily aimed directly at Christian student leaders. One of these is the National Young Leaders Day held at the Melbourne Convention Centre. In 2011 twenty-two students from Drouin Middle School joined with over 3,000 students from around Victoria in this one-day program. Students listened to a range of carefully selected guest speakers. Their stories and examples were inspiring and our students were challenged about how they could operate as positive role models within the Chairo School community. Our Drouin Senior School Captains and Vice-Captains again participated in two ‘Synergy’ Student Leaders Breakfasts, hosted by the Baw Baw Shire. These events saw our student leaders joining with those from the six other regional secondary schools to discuss leadership vision and strategies. They are also challenged by guest speakers who share aspects of their leadership journeys with our students. Each year senior student leaders from both our Pakenham and Drouin campuses join together with student leaders from Christian schools throughout Victoria to participate in the Victorian Youth Prayer Breakfast. They join together to pray for the needs of our schools, for our state and national leaders and for our wider world. In 2011 our students were addressed by Dan Lian from CityLife Church in Melbourne. One of Chairo’s regular forums for student leadership are our Student Senates and SRC. These groups are run by students, with the help of a staff liaison member, and provide opportunities for students to demonstrate initiatives in many areas. I have specifically referred to some of the achievements of our Senates and SRC in the ‘Mission and Community Service Programs’ section of this report.

2. Teacher Standards & Qualifications Of the 97 teachers employed in 2011: 81 had a Bachelor of Education or a Bachelor Degree, of which 16 held at least 2 separate bachelor degrees 53 had a Diploma of Education/Teaching 32 had additional Graduate Diplomas or Certificates 7 had additional Masters Degrees All our teachers are accredited with the VIT and have provided satisfactory police checks.

3. Workforce Composition

In 2011 Chairo had 1027 student enrolments from Prep to Year 12 across our 3 campuses. In addition to this we had 146 enrolled in 3 and 4 Year Old Kinder. As at the Australian Government Census in August 2011, numbers of staff employed within the School to appropriately cater for the needs of these children and their families were: Teaching Staff 77.1 Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) teaching staff were employed, involving 97 individual staff members. Of these, 46 were full-time, 68% were female and none were from declared Indigenous backgrounds. Non-Teaching Staff Non-teaching staff include classroom aides and assistants, administration and finance staff, specialist support staff such as chaplains, grounds and maintenance staff and library staff. In 2011 the numbers of non- teaching staff employed as of Census Day were:

40.2 Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) non-teaching staff, involving 67 individual staff members. Of these 16 were full-time, 75% were female and none were from declared Indigenous backgrounds.

4. Student Attendance On average the percentage of students absent from school all day in 2011 was 4.8% (being 95.2% attendance). This is broken down by year level below. Management of Student Non-attendance At Chairo Christian School we place a high priority on communicating effectively and promptly with all of our School families. This is in line with our School Mission Statement which refers directly to the term ‘in partnership with families’. Our 2010 and 2011 Focus Statement was ‘Productive partnership through effective communication’. Once again, this highlights the priority that we place on effective communication with our School community. The way in which we respond to our School families in relation to the area of student attendance also reflects the above priorities. Student attendance rolls are marked twice daily; at the start of the School day and immediately after lunch. Notification of student absences where no explanation has been received is forwarded promptly to parents via an SMS message. If not provided earlier, an explanatory note from parents outlining the reason for a student absence is also required on the return of students to school. These notes are appropriately filed. Homegroup, Core or Grade Teachers are expected to personally contact the home of a student in their class who has been absent for a number of days. This provides both pastoral care support and a further accountability process in relation to the absence. The number of student absences is also recorded in Student Semester Reports.

6. Student outcomes in standardised national literacy and numeracy testing: Staff at Chairo are involved in the continual monitoring of the academic performances of our students against National Benchmarks. Such monitoring is able to occur in a variety of ways, including the conducting of the NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) Tests held at the Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 levels and through the use of formal and informal assessment procedures.

Figure 1 - NAPLAN RESULTS using the NAPLAN Scale

This report uses the NAPLAN scale. Chairo Christian School scores are shown in the upper row for each Year level, compared to Statistically Similar Schools and All Schools in the lower row.

7. Parent, student and teacher satisfaction with the School Chairo Christian School highly values the opinions of our students, parents and staff. Their responses help us to better provide for the social, emotional and spiritual welfare of our students. As a CEN school, we recognise the educational ‘partnership’ that exists between Home and School. Consequently, we invite regular responses from our School community. These responses are gathered in a variety of ways. These include a formal range of surveys, the holding of Parent-Teacher-Student Interviews, the use of the Student Diary as a communication vehicle and the opportunity for parents to request informal interviews with specific staff or to write letters regarding significant matters. Information derived from the sources specified above is carefully analysed. Such information is frequently discussed at appropriate School meetings and feedback of this nature is considered to be vital as the School creates its Strategic Plan and a Master Plan for further development.

Independent Schools Victoria (ISV) – LEAD (Listen, Evaluate, Act, Deliver) Report

In 2011 Chairo Christian School participated in the full suite of the LEAD Report program. This involved extensive external surveying (on-line process) of Parents, Students, Year 12 Exit Students, Teachers and School Leaders. Independent Schools Victoria then provided the School with an extensive report that analysed all data received through this survey mechanism. The School Leadership and Management Team have spent considerable time analysing the feedback contained in these reports as we continue the process of School strategic planning.

Languages other than English (LOTE) Review Parent Survey In 2011 the School Board authorised the Board Education Committee (a sub-committee of the Board) to undertake a full review of LOTE at Chairo Christian School. As one component of this review process, every school parent received a Cover Letter inviting them to complete an attached LOTE Survey. The results of this survey provided one important source of information that assisted the Board Education Committee to frame their final recommendations. (Once again, the administration of such a survey is in line with Chairo Christian School’s desire to ‘partner’ with our parent community.)

Parent Exit Surveys 2011 Whenever a family leaves the School they are given the opportunity to complete an exit survey to provide feedback about their experiences at Chairo, both positive and negative. These surveys reinforce the high level of satisfaction that exists amongst our parent body, while parents who express concerns provide valuable information to help us to improve.

In 2011 89% of departing parents who returned forms expressed satisfaction with the School in areas including academic standards, pastoral care, extra-curricular opportunities, communication and facilities. Three families expressed some disappointment in relation to various areas of School performance. We follow up these concerns with the families involved wherever possible.

9. Income Broken Down by Funding Source Chairo Christian School operates 3 campuses in relatively low socio-economic areas (SES funding level of 94) in rural Victoria and on the Melbourne metropolitan fringe. In 2011 21.2% of students came from families able to claim the Education Maintenance Allowance, indicating they held a Health Care/Pension Card and were on low incomes. In line with this background and the School’s ethos, fee policies allow for parents across all socio-economic quartiles who desire a Christian education for their children to access our School, while ensuring income is maintained at a level which, with good management of resources, ensures excellent educational outcomes. In 2011, as reported in the Australian Government’s Financial Questionnaire, our total operating income was $14,168,130. Of this 48% came from Australian Government Recurrent Grants, 19% from State Government Recurrent Grants (including bus conveyance allowances), 30% from receipts from parents including tuition fees, and 3% from other sources. In 2011, 1027 students were enrolled across 3 campuses from Prep to Year 12. Our Operating Margin (excluding depreciation) was 8.1% (1.5% including depreciation). Chairo is a not-for-profit entity and any cash operating surpluses are entirely used to further develop and maintain the School. Our Pakenham Campus is in a growth corridor of Melbourne and capital development needs are consistent there as numbers grow each year and as the campus expands to become a Kinder-Year 12 site in 2013-2014. Our Times Interest Earned ratio was 11.3, our Debt to Equity ratio was 8.5% and our Debt per Student in 2011 was $1512.
