Salik Development Foundation (SDF) has initiated
welfare activities since its establishment in 1989. With the passage of time SDF has started various
developmental activities. During the period of 21 years SDF workers faced many problems, accidents
and troubles. We learned a lot from experiences and circumstances during interacting with
community. During those hard days SDF members, staff,
partners and all well wishers cooperated according to their capacity. Due to which lacs of people are being benefited by
SDF services today. SDF partner PPAF has cooperated and guided a lot. With the guidance
of Mr. Kamal Hyat, Chief Executive of PPAF all staff of PPAF and
especially CPI unit has guided and facilitated all partner organization in Pakistan for the alleviation of poverty, which is exemplary. Affiliation
with PPAF is considered an honor. SDF has completed the CPI schemes in the backward communities of District, Mardan, Sawabi and
Peshawar and Kohistan successfully while several schemes are in progress. This will help poverty alleviation in the backward areas of
KPK and AJK. After the historical migration of IDPs from SWAT, DIR, BUNER districts
due to military operations, Salik Foundation started its IDPs support program with collaboration of PPAF in Jalala, Shekh Shehzad, Shekh
Yaseen, Benazir and Jalozia IDPs camps. Which supported the IDPs towards rehabilitation and rebuilding of their areas.
Beside PPAF collaboration, SDF has completed several developmental
projects with collaboration of UNICEF, FATA, Pompier de Urgence and
Secure Populair from France successfully. Due to which not only the area developed but mutual cooperation and trust has also been raised.
I resolve and conclude that we would like to collaborate with those
organization and individuals who work for development and peace in the world in order to establish a peaceful, developed and prosperous
society.
Thanks!
Jehan Zeb President SDF.

1. Community Physical Infrastructure (CPI) Program
Introduction. CPI program launched in District Mardan, Swabi and Peshawar in 2002. Salik Development (SDF) signed an agreement for CPI Phase I with PPAF. The CPI schemes begun properly in November, 2002. Five phases of CPI have been completed successfully.. While the 6th phase agreement has been signed this year. The main schemes and activities of CPI are construction of link roads, street pavement, construction of main drains and street drains, Installation of communal afridio hand pumps, irrigation water stoppers (nakkas), and construction of culverts, small bridges and capacity building of COs. SDF has implemented total 25 schemes in 24 backward communities of district Kohistan and Tehsil Dassu and Pattan. The details are as follow.
Methodology The project staff consists of one CPI coordinator, one social organizer, one engineer and an accountant. The CPI Coordinator is responsible for all project implementation activities, planning and management with the assistance of social organizer. Social organizer attends community meetings and gatherings. He is especially responsible for social mobilization and in fact he is the person of the community. The job description of engineer is to analyze CO’s proposals, project area survey and preparation of estimated budget for schemes. Accountant maintain all project accounts and he also facilitate COs for accounts maintenance. Social organizer is the match stick and burn the fire of sensitization. He goes to the community and meets with project stake holders’ i.e. community leader, teachers, social workers, religious leaders, Imam Masjid, youth and farmers for choosing an activist. He meets individually and collectively with community members of project area for social mobilization and organization purposes. Social organizer and CPI coordinator prepare community for 20 % shares against 80 % grant from SDF. This process usually takes 3 months. After the period of 3 months the CO becomes well equipped for project implementation. The COs passes a resolution in a Broad Based Community Meeting (BBCM) for a prioritized scheme. They send the resolution to SDF head office and the CPI project staff analyzes the proposal and finally project approval Committee (PAC) approves the proposal. The project work begins under supervision of CPI project staff and concerned CO.

divides it into two parts - Hazara Kohistan
and Swat Kohistan. These two parts were
merged in 1976 to form Kohistan District.
The district is warm in summer except some
areas of high altitude and very cold in winter.

7: Teachers Trainings and Exposure Visit To improve education, the importance of teacher training cannot be underestimated. The
better a teacher is trained, the better he or she can educate coming generation of
Pakistanis. In addition, teacher training doesn't just positively impact teachers and
students' knowledge of a subject matter. The teaching method used to share
information by teachers helps children not only stay in school, but also engages young
students and encourages them to keep learning.
Salik Foundation conducted 10 Teachers trainings in District Kohistan for the
improvement of Education. The duration of every training was 2 days. The Facilitator
tried to keep group of participants not more than 15 so that he may be able to manage the
group and deliver his messages easily and efficiently.
Education is conceived as a powerful agency, which is
instrumental in bringing about the
desired changes in the social and cultural life of a
nation. The whole process of education is shaped and
by the human personality called the teacher, who
plays a pivotal role in any system of education. The
preparation of such an important functionary must
conceivably get the highest priority. It is a challenging

profession and only those teachers can shoulder the heavy responsibilities of nation
building, which are adequately prepared and have sound professional
attitude. This adequacy of preparation, of course, signifies development of adequate
skills, dedication to teaching and a determination for continuous growth and learning.
All the trainings started with recitation of Holy Quran, followed by introduction of
Participants and the facilitator. After introduction facilitator then started his session
according to the agenda. Facilitator tried to explain the points practically and included
group work in trainings.
The trainings were participatory and the facilitator tried to involve the participants in
training sessions. That’s why after every group work the participants themselves
presented their work as well they were asking questions and giving their feedback.
One of the causes of low enrolment is student’s illness which is mainly due to Beside this
hygiene promotion in schools. Due to bad hygienic condition children suffer from
diarrhea and
other water born disease which leads to low enrolment and thus it is a hurdle in the way
to improve education. Thus hygiene promotion in schools was also among the points of
trainings agenda. Teachers were trained how to improve hygienic condition in schools.

9: Coordination Meetings Coordination meetings in any project implementation are very necessary. The
coordination meetings provide a forum through which individuals from Government
agencies, relevant organizations and donors involved in implementing or capacity-
building activities meet, interact and share information and experiences. The meetings
also provide a mechanism for participants to discuss and develop a common
understanding on key issues and priority needs. They also provide an opportunity to
review and consider ways of addressing the gaps
or overlaps between existing activities.
Furthermore, the meetings facilitate the
exchange of views and ideas aimed at improving
the future planning.
Salik Development Foundation conduct regular
coordination meeting in Kohistan with different
government and non government organizations
for sharing experiences, progress and other
project related information. A view of Coordination meeting

10: Repair and renovation of 25 schools Renovation of 26 schools is included in our scope of work. It includes renovation of
Floor, Roof Doors, White Washing and Electricity.
11: Renovation of Water and Sanitation Facilities The impact of poor sanitation and contaminated water is known to be disastrous for
infants and young children; it also has an important impact on the health of school-age
children including adolescents.
Disease is not the only problem caused by poor sanitation in the school environment.
Providing safe and separate sanitation facilities for girls, particularly adolescents are one
of the key factors in promoting greater school attendance by girls, and preventing them
from staying away from school.
Before renovation After renovation
30 SDF Annual Report 2009-10
Access to sanitation facilities and safe drinking water is a fundamental right that
safeguards health and human dignity. Providing those facilities at schools not only helps
to meet that right, it
Also helps in improving student’s attendance and decrease dropout. Lack of facilities and
poor
Hygiene affects both girls and boys, although poor sanitation conditions at schools have a
stronger negative impact on girls. All girls should have access to safe, clean, separate and
private sanitation facilities in their schools. If there are latrines and hand-washing
facilities at school but in a poor state of repair, then many children would rather not
attend than use the alternatives. If they don’t they may miss school very early and find it
hard to catch up, which makes them more likely to drop out of school altogether.
Many children, again mainly girls, miss out on time at school because they have to walk
long distances in order to fetch water. Also in schools, when the school teacher sends
children to fetch water.
It’s a Lessons learned that provision of water and sanitation facilities in schools increased
students attendance. Thus Renovation of water and sanitation facilities in 26 targeted
schools of district Kohistan is one of the major component of this project. This main
component of schools deficiency has been completed with satisfaction of general masses.
12: Establishment of 26 learning resource centers The Learning resource centers in schools provides information and ideas that are
fundamental to functioning successfully in today’s information and knowledge-based
society. Research studies continue to show that an active learning resource centers in
schools makes a significant difference to student learning outcomes. Our target is to

establish 26 learning resource centers in targeted schools. Procurement has been done for
these learning resource centers. Our plan is to establish all 26 learning resource centers
till May 30, 2010. This dire need of improvement for children interest has also been
completed.
13: Provision of necessary fixtures- lights, fans etc. Provision of necessary fixtures- lights, fans, electrification etc is in progress and till now
we have completed 26 schools.
14: Provision of desks and benches for students It is also one of the major needs of most of the
schools. Our plan is to provide desks and benches for
the students in targeted schools. Total distribution of
590 bench desk has been completed.
15: Provision of Furniture for teachers During survey the need of Tables and chairs for
teachers also identified almost in all schools.
Till now we have provided chairs, tables and
cupboard for teachers to 26 schools.
16: Computer for 5 schools Computers have become an integral part of day to day life. Since the advent of personal
and home computers, they have become an integral part of the education system. Being
good in studies and computers can secure better job prospects, in this age and time
computer knowledge is a must.
Salik Development Foundation has provided computers to 5 schools.

17: Sports material for 26 schools
Becoming a well rounded member of society takes more than scholastic ability. School
sports pay huge dividends in a child development. During a child's school years, children
typically lose their recess privileges as a
consequence to poor behavior. This consequence
can have the opposite of the desired effect. In
games kids let out their aggression and release
frustration and anger, allowing the children to
better cope with the aspects of school they do not
enjoy. Looking to this need Salik Development
Foundation has planned to provide sports material
to all targeted schools. Which has been completed
to all 26 schools?
18. Problems 1. In Project area there is only One Bank (NBP Branch) and there is no facility of
online transaction as well as takes a long time while transferring amount.
2. Skill persons not available in huge bunches.
3. Material for Renovation of schools and other project activities are not available in
our Project area; and we are compelled to purchase more than 95% of material
from, Lahore, Rawal Pindi and Peshawar, which waste our time and resources.
4. Rainy season and sliding in the hilly area also bares halts in the project progress.
19. Challenges 1. Remote area
2. Trainers are not willing to come to Kohistan due to land sliding, being remote,
and non availability of well accommodation and other facilities.
3. Snowfall and Land sliding affect our progress.
4. Security threat in all area of district Kohistan.

3.IDPs Support Program Jalozai Camp
Due to Swat, Malakand agency and FATA military operation a huge invasion of 2.7

Army provided building near Jalozai IDPs camp Nowshera.
2. Area Profile
Jalozai refugee camp, 35 kilometers southwest of Peshawar, looks like a small, bustling
city, with a mile-long bazaar offering a wealth of goods. In 2009 the military operation
against militants in Swat, and FATA region million of IDP’ placed in Jalzoai camp. In
the camp IDPs have many problems like food, shelter, clothes and finance for survival in
the camp. They wanted to have financial support so that to become able to fulfill their
basic needs of life, as they had nothing after displacement from their place of origin. For

Muzaffar abad and Balakot. The project area is consisting of communities containing
180,000 populations. People of the area are deprived from basic facilities like Shelter,
safe drinking water, food, latrines and health facilities. Due to hard and outreach
geography of the area the people could not get instant and quick relief. Even government

drinking water is a core issue. The women and children are helpless who fetch water from
springs located far from their homes.

82 SDF Annual Report 2009-10
Salik Foundation is working throughout NWFP especially in Peshwar, Swabi, Mardan
and after earthquake in Mansehra, Batagram, Balakot, Ghari Habibullah, Muzaffara
Abad, Charak pura, Athmuqam and Sharda tehsils of district Neelum, AJK.
Background of Project Area:
Baizo Kharki is the combination of two words, Baizo means pata and Kharki means
secure area or fort. It is at a distance of 55 km west-north from Mardan city on main
Malakand road. Total population is 18 thousand approximately. Local language is pushto
but the people can understand Urdu also. There are three main tribes i.e Torzai, Yousaf
Zai and Dalazak.
The new name of Biazo Kkarki is Ikram Pur which is the union council of district
Mardan with the boundary of Malakand district. This area is surrounded by mountainous
series in east, west and north side due to which it was a safer village since long. Various
famous rulers ruled here in which one was Alexander the great. It is told that his mother
named “Bosakai” belonged to Baizo Kharki. It is found that from the very old ruins that
the rulers of those ages had built monasteries, wells, places of worship, and underground
roads for their convenience. Pools and ponds were made in the area for water reservation
for animals and human beings in which a big pond is present till now. The fossils and
statues found here from the ruins shows that the religion of the people of that age was
Buddhism.
Ikram pur (Baizo Kharki) is an agricultural land. People are mostly connected with
agriculture or abroad employment. The average income of the people is very low. Ikram
Pur is one of the most backward union councils of district Mardan. The main reasons of
backwardness and poverty is lack of transportation, away from Takht Bhai and Mardan
cities, less employment, and educational opportunities, crimes and lack of health
facilities. There are one government high schools for boys and one government girls high
school, and two primary schools. One basic health center but there is no lady doctor and
medicines. Majority people have no access to clean drinking water.
Due to poverty and low income the food and nutrition status is very weak of the people,
resultantly the health and physique of the people is weak especially children under the
age of five years and pregnant/lactating women.
There are few community based organizations, named Youth Welfare Association
Chalgaze, Youth Organization Kalo Shah and Youth Organization Raidawan. These
organizations doing their efforts for the welfare and betterment of the area on self help
basis.

Interpretation of overall progress
The program was introduced in target community including local government elected
representatives, nazims, activists, school teachers, volunteers and staff of BHU health
facility Ikram pure. They were mobilized by the community mobilizers and project
coordinator. Female conducted an orientation session of females separately after the
male orientation meeting.
The qualitative information is that the community was sensitized about Malnutrition
of mothers and children under five. The community welcomed our Health &
Nutrition (CMAM) activities in the area and they were happy. Our mobilzers told in
both male and female meetings that the project staff will tell you useful food recipes
which will contain balance diet and nutrition.
The nazim and community members (IDPs) ensured their fullest cooperation.
Challenges:
The biggest challenge in the area is curfew in Dargai area and the presence of militants in
some areas especially in Palai camp area. Curfew was imposed in 10 days during this
month also. However our project staff intervenes carefully in sensitive areas with the
consultation and guidance of local community elders.
Opportunities
Salik Foundation has established field office inside BHU Ikram Pur near to Palai Camp
area, which is the facility of government health department. The EPI Technician and

medical staff cooperating with our project staff for the implementation of CMAM
activities.
Success Story
As some IDPs returned from our project area. Our project team coordinated and visited
the out reach communities and register new IPDs beneficiaries after screening and social
mobilization about the program. The IDPs and host people of the area welcomed the
program and cooperated all project staff very well.

6.Upper FATA Livelihood Development Program:
Skill Training Center Jalozai Camp Nowshera:
1. Inauguration of Program Salik Development Foundation signed an agreement with FATA LDP for the Vocational
Skill Training of 200 IDPs in six trades’ i.e.
1. Plumbing
2. Carpentry
3. Masonry
4. Electrician
5. Embroidery
6. Tailoring
2. Identification of IDPs for Trainings The IDPs were identified in the camp who fulfilling the following criteria.
The trainees age must be from 18 to 40 years.
Must be registered in the camp.
Must have CNIC for male not necessary for females. (Females have their father
and husband CNIC).
Must belong to 1) Bajuar, 2) Khyber and 3) Mohmand Agencies.
3. Interest of IDPs IDPs are too much interested in all the training especially the females were keen to
get training in Salik Development Foundation Vocational training centre. While in males
they were interested in Plumbing, carpentry, Electrician, and masonry respectively.
4. Merits of skill trainings The main advantage of this training is that these IDPs from different agencies will be
able to get training in specific profession for their future livelihood. After this successful
training this will be the main source of their income generation. They can easily earn
Rs.500 per day. When employment increases poverty will automatically decreases and as
the poverty decreases in the end we will get a peaceful and prosperous society. In the
long run this skill training has a vital role in sustainable peace in the said agencies. As for
as the females of the above areas are concerned they will be not looking to their husbands
for small house hold items and will earn their pocket money by themselves. Education
ratio in these agencies is very low. So in long run this training will help a lot in their
future life.
Starting of Classes Regular classes were started from 21
st May, 2010 in vocational technical training center
Jalozai camp in collaboration with FATA LDP. All the students were briefed about the
program and introduction of Salik Development Foundation and FATA LDP. After this
session of introduction classes were formally started according to the syllabus of each
trade. Time duration was 12 days of each trade.
