1. With You - Director Speaks

Adaraneeya Bandhu / Bhagini,

The Fruits of the Tree is not for the TreeWater flowing in the River is not for the RiverLife of a Saint is not for the SaintAll these are for the benefit of the Universe — Saint Kabir

The true Dharma of a Human being is to think of the people around him / her in the Societyand Respond to their Happiness and Sorrows, rather than thinking of himself and his family only. The same is quoted by Sri Vyasa Maharishi as “PAROPAKARA PUNYAYA PAPAYAPARAPEEDANAM”. It is natural that each and every Person will have a feeling that he shoulddo and / or give some thing to the Society. Since last 30 years Hindu Seva Pratishthana (HSP)is giving shape to these feelings. The motto of the HSP is that “Social Service should becomea Movement”, “Transformation, Awareness & Self Reliance should be brought aboutin the Society through Service”, “Finally Helpless/Humble persons should becomeDonors”. With such high ideals, with the co-operation and help from the people corporates &individuals of the society, HSP is moving ahead in this direction with gradual steps.

We are fortunate enough to have blessings of both Revered Sri Sri Visvesha Teertha Swamijiof Pejawar Math, Udupi as Chancellor of HSP and Revered Sri Sri Balagangadharanatha Swamijiof Aadi Chunchanagiri Samsthana as the Chief Patron.

I am placing the brief report on the service activities of the HSP during the year 2009-10.HSP’s activities is expanding year after year. New persons are entering the field. Locals havealso considerably extended their helping hand in the service activities. These are all very gooddevelopments.

As you turn the pages you will come to know of the activities, in brief, of many of our projectsduring the year under review. We place below the highlights of these activities:

• Hundreds of persons who came to help NELE in many ways and co-operated with usin the development of the children thereat, have now become part of our project in theform of “NELE Balaga”.

Page 5: Annual Report — 2009-10 1 - Hindu Seva Pratishthanahinduseva.org/.../2013/10/HSP_annual-report-2009-10_Eng.pdfAnnual Report — 2009-10 1 HINDU SEVA PRATISHTHANA "Ajitashree", 8/28,

Annual Report — 2009-10 5

• All the Sevavratis and the children of NELEs skipped a meal and donated Rs.10,000/-to the Natural Calamities Relief Fund to help the flood victims in North Karnataka.

• Sri Vikshut of Infosys has been a full time volunteer for one year in Youth For Sevaproject and has mainly worked for Conservation of Nature.

• 330 children were assisted under the “Sponsor a Child” programme of Youth For Seva

• 1000 volunteers are serving the society at week ends (2 days), in 82 Service Organisa-tions under the banner Youth for Seva.

• A training workshop was conducted in Personal Counselling, for four days, at NewDelhi, organised by Seva Bharathi thereat. The programme was successfully conductedby representatives from our Prasanna Aptha Salaha Kendra.

• The building construction of “NELE Swavalambana” is coming up rapidly in Laggere.

• D.S.E.R.T., Karnataka Government discussed in detail and understood the concept ofour project “Samagra Sishu Sikshana Scheme (Integrated Child Education Programme)”.

Similarly, in each and every project there are many such events / incidents worth mentioning, which are encouraging. It is heartening to note that that programmes / activities are going onthrough out the year in all our projects.

There is enough scope / work for any number of persons who want to render service to thesociety. In the circumstances, large number of persons who can give their time and acceleratethe work are required. Of course, large monetary resources is also required for these activities.

In this way HSP has trained 4043, young Male & Female volunteers, who have improvedthere own lives, along with serving the society and striving hard to improve its position. HSP iscontinuously encouraging (adding oil to the burning lamp) those who are mentally prepared todevote a few years of their youthful days to the cause of the society. Such shining lamps arebringing transformation in the society.

An Appeal:There is a saying in our society – Drops make the Ocean – which is very much applicable to

the Service to Society also. Our Kulapathi Revered Sri Sri Visvesha Teertha Swamiji ofPejawar Math, Udupi had given a call long back to this effect, which urges that “Every oneshould devote some time during the day or atleast during the week for social work, save somemoney from his earnings and donate it for service activities and involve persons with serviceoriented mind in Social Service”. We urge upon you to heed to the Swamiji’s call, in letter andspirit and contribute your mite to this noble cause of Service to Society.

RESULT OF SEVAVRATHIS WORK –SILENT DECLARATION OF HARMONY

Since last two years the Sevavratis are conducting Balagokula, Matru Mandali,Home Tuition etc. Social Service Activities in the surrounding villages, keepingthe Yalahanka Satellite Town as the Central Point. Such activities are also con-ducted in the Poura Karmika's Colony in Kogilu village near Yalahanka. Justthey thought why not they include all ladies in these villages and conductMatru Sangama and immediately it was put to action. It was decided to hold thisfunction on the 14th April, Dr. Ambedkar’s Jayanthi Day. More than 200 mothershad assembled . Mothers of Seva Basthi (Slum)also participated by paying thefees and through their Self Help Group arranged for catering of Sharabath to all. There was no differentiation feelings amongst all the participants as to CasteRich & Poor, Upper & Lower Class, untouchables, etc. There was only one feel-ing that we all are Human Beings. Every one participated in all the works wholeheartedly, as if they all belong to one family. The main reason for this was theactivities conducted by the Sevavratis in this place.

The 31st Mahila Sevavrati Camp was held at our own premises at YelahankaSatellite Town near Bengaluru, for 40 days from 1st October to 10th November,2009. 112 young girls, from 21 districts of Karnataka, attended the TrainingCamp and took the SEVA DEEKSHA (Oath of Seva).

4. ARUNA CHETANASANJANA PRIYA, a beautiful girl, studying in 2nd standard, is unfortunately achild with loss of speech, but very active. She has to be kept engaged with somework or tied to the chair to keep her quiet. In her house she had observed that theservant boy had stolen her mother’s mobile. She indicated that the boy has stolenthe mobile, when her mother was searching for the same. Her father paraded allthe servants in the house and Sanjana Priya identified the person and pointedout at him through eye sign only. The boy argued that Sanjana do not under-stand any thing and cannot be believed. The father had faith in Sanjana andsubjected the boy to severe questioning, in which the boy accepted the guilt. Apartfrom this other thefts of small jewellery items etc. totalling to around 90 grams ofgold also came to light, during the enquiry. After a week or so the teacher in the classroom asked the students. How they havehelped their mother in the house? For this Sanjana tried to tell some thingwhich the teacher did not understand. With the help of her father Sanjanarevealed the above incident and informed the teacher that she has helped hermother in this way.

Is this not a good example for what Specially Abled Children are capable of?

Aruna Chetana is a project of Hindu Seva Pratishthana, wherein we run a Special School forSpecially Abled Children (Children with multiple disabilities). Since last 22 years it is renderinga yeomen service to the society and doing a wonderful job. There are more than 170 childrenin this school, apart from 61 children in its extended arms at Kempapura Agrahara (Chithanya),Thindlu (Belaku) and Peenya (Pranathi). In this Special School, apart from the Specific

Education, the children are trained in different vocations depending on their abilities. Importanceis also given to Personality Development, Handy Crafts, etc. Children are progressing verywell, in stages.

For the first time in this field our school has introduced Accu Pressure and Magnet Treatment/ Therapies, under the able guidance of Sri Sadashiva Datar, which has not been tried out in anysuch schools, so far. Due to this treatment improvement in Health, Mental Alertness andEnergization of the five Sensory Organs (Indriyas) have taken place. This has helped in all-round development of the children and also hastened the learning process.

Other Efforts:We understood that the problems in Child’s growth, Caring of children etc., are to be brought

to the knowledge of the parents / guardians along with solutions to the problems. So, we areconducting, since last 2 years, “Care Givers Training” to the parents, guardians and the teachers, which has helped them to proceed in the right direction and is well appreciated. 20 personsparticipated in the latest programme. The programme included lectures by experts / specialists inthe field of Optic Disabilities, Autism, Epilepsy, Laws / Rules / Regulations framed in thisregard, etc.. Apart from this the teachers of the school also took sessions on Underdevelopmentof Mental Faculties, Different Dis-abilities, Special Trainings, Vocational Training, Speech Therapy,Physiotherapy, etc.

We conducted workshops for the teachers, to increase their skills / knowledge in effectivetutoring, managing dis-abilities, physiotherapy etc.

We have trained persons from KPAMRC of Maharashtra. For advanced training 15persons had come again and got good results. Many colleges like MES, AMMANNI, MSW& others have chosen our school for Case Study, Research and Project Work.

Cultural Activities:

To create social / cultural awareness festivals like Raksha Bandhan, Ganesha, Ayudha Pooja,Tulasi Pooja, Seva Day etc. were celebrated with joy and splendour. On the occasion of SuryaNamaskara Yagna on the Ratha Saptami Day the children surprised all the persons present byperforming 108 Surya Namaskars, without mistakes or tiredness. This was possible due to thesustained direction and practise given by the teachers on a continuous basis. The children alsovisited Poorna Pragna Vidypeetha in Bengaluru and obtained the blessings of our Kulapathi SriSri Visvesha Teertha Swamiji.

5. SAMAGRA SISHU SIKSHANAEducation should not be a burden but should be a joyful learning process – Opinion ofthe renowned Educationists. Unfortunately what is happening at present is that Pre-

Primary Education is treated asPreparation to send the children to thePrimary Education and lot of pressure hasbeen put on them to learn various unwantedsubjects including reading, writing, mathematics etc. These are hampering thedevelopment of various faculties ofchildren. Because of mistakenunderstanding the system is beingcontinued aggressively despite the nega-tive factors. We are seeing the Child / In-fant education is being drowned in themassive flood of education.

Even in such a social atmosphere thinkingis going on that the acquisition ofknowledge / education to infant childrenshould be through their experience andsensory organs. To help promoting thisconstructive thoughts on “Integrated ChildEducation - ICE” new Sishu Mandirs wereformed. The main component of ICE is tocreate an enjoyable and constructive

atmosphere for the growth of children. This message should be spread to all the persons.Since last 18 years 40 such Sishu Mandirs are catering ICE and experimenting onfurther development in this. This is getting the attention of many and becoming popular.

Statistical Data:Number of Sishu Mandirs – 40 (20 each in North and South Karnataka)Number of children undergoing ICE – 1278Number teachers involved in the exercise – 55Number of persons assisting in the above exercise / experiment – 43

A 4 days workshop on Integrated Child Education was conducted between 22nd and 25thOctober, 2009, wherein 39 teachers had participated.

The meeting of the renowned educationists involved in ICE was held three times during thereview period. The activities of Sishu Mandirs under ICE were analysed and reviewed toensure that they are on track of the original plan.

Araluva Moggu (Blossoming / Blooming Buds) Magazine:

Poorva Gurukula Sikshana Yojane (Pre- Gurukula Education Plan):Children who grew up in ICE Sishu Mandirs when they join Primary school have shown fast

learning, extra capabilities etc. To cope up with this, the teachers of those primary schoolssuggested they also should be trained. To cater to this requirements and in extending the thoughts/ experiments of ICE at the primary school level we have started “Poorva Gurukula Shikshana(Pre Gurukula education)”. Since last ten years 9 Primary Schools in 8 districts have implementedthe scheme and are giving education as per this project.

9. HINDU JEEVANA DEEPIKAHinduism is full of diverse Dharmas / Practices, Culture, Philosophy, Views, Values of Life,

Moral Rules, Beliefs, Methods of living, Festivals, Thoughts & Observations, Shraddha (Devo-tion) Centres and Forms of worshipping. The supportive literatures, related to each one ofthese are also vast like an ocean. There are innumerable castes / sub-castes in the HinduSociety, which have adopted these means of achieving the End Goal. The history of all thesewhich were born, grown, practiced and experimented in our beloved land is so ancient, diverse, ever new and vast that it is almost impossible to understand easily and it will be a HerculeanTask to achieve command over it. But most of our people feel that they should know atleast afew of these things.

We should follow any of the rituals, philosophy, culture, etc. only after understanding itthoroughly. Keeping the above in view and also the difficulty in understanding the vast subjects,Hindu Jeevana Deepika (HJD) has attempted to bring them in concise, easily understandableand simple lessons format. In our Hindu Society we have full freedom for this. HJD is doingthis job since two decades and thousands of people have got benefit out of this.

It is also a fact that with the lapse of time, changes in thinking style, viewing of things withnew dimensions to the subject, etc., the enormous literature prepared in this connection have tobe revised / redesigned to meet the present day requirements / new subjects to be added. Thiswork is also going on, on a continuous basis, side by side.

14. NELE - SWAVALAMBANASo far more than 300 poor women have been trained here in tailoring. Of

these around 100 women have started their own occupation in their houses andare earning Rs.3,000/- to Rs.3,500/- per month. Another 150 have joined Garmentfactories. 2 of them have started their own tailoring shops.

One of the women was so poor that she was not in a position even to buy clothfor stitching. The other trainees brought cloth from their houses and helped thetrainee to complete her training.

One women, Smt. Jayashri, was not showing any interest in any thing in thehouse and has become quite active after joining the tailoring classes. Her hus-band confirms that the atmosphere in the house has also turned to be happy now.

Muslim women Harshia, Julekha, Irsha and others have actively participatedin all the Cultural and Pooja programmes at the centre. All trainees feel thatNELE – Swavalambana is their own.

illiterates like her to understand and learn the lessons well.- The training here is liked by us more than the one given by the State Government

Corporation, which also distribute tailoring machines freely.- We got to know new things / Informations due to weekly discussions- We all feel that the Centre is ours.
