I pray to Lord Shiva, who wears a garland of skulls around the neck, who has a net of snakes around His body, who is the destroyer of the immense-destroyer Kaala, who is the lord of Ganesha, whose matted hair is spread-out by the waves of the Ganges falling on His head, and who is the Lord of everyone. I pray to Lord Shiva, who scatters happiness in the world, who rules the universe, who is the immense universe Himself, whose body is adorned with ash, who has no beginning, who is without a measure, who removes the greatest attachments, and who is the Lord of everyone. I pray to Lord Shiva, who resides below a Banyan tree, who has a roaring laugh, who destroys the greatest sins, who is always resplendent, who is the Lord of the mountains, the Ganas, and the demi-gods, who is the great Lord, and who is the Lord of everyone. Children can memorise things very quickly, and they only need to listen to a sloka twice or thrice to learn and recite it. Chanting slokas is beneficial for children as it improves memory and concentration. Studies have found that the positive effects of chanting slokas on the brain are permanent. Teach your child these slokas to experience the benefits of chanting.

MESSAGE FROM HCK KISUMU CHAIRMAN

On behalf of the Member Institutions of Hindu Council Of Kenya

Kisumu Branch, my committee and myself, I would like to convey

our greetings to the Hindu Community at large.

We are fortunate enough to inherit one of the richest cultures in

the world, and we have the right to feel pride in our traditions.

We live in a time when young people are being pulled in all direc-

tions and they end up becoming confused and disorientated,

western influence has been increasing steadily. We follow their

education system and learn their language. Children speak their

language better than our own. Western Fashions are the norm

today. Our core values and traditions are slowly being eroded.

At this juncture, we need to step back, reflect and chart out a bal-

anced way forward and make a concerted effort about preserving

our own identity.

My aim as a Chairman is to bring is to bring the youths together,

to instil our culture right from the tender age, to look at the wel-

fare of our senior citizens and to bring in togetherness amongst

the community members and improve bonding within the com-

munities.

As a branch we also look at the welfare of local ethnic community

by organising eye camps, donating food to homes and the needy

and organising medical camps. This does not only bring in individ-

ual satisfaction but also brings in social security.

As a captain alone cannot sail a ship but it’s the team jointly that

sails a ship and for that I would like to thank my team from Kisu-

mu for having faith in me and steering our ship as a team towards

the goal we want to achieve.

21.11.18 in mombasa.

Hindu Religious & Service Centre (HRSC) has 60 Schools with a population of 20,400 students under their

School feeding projects whereby each student get a hot meal of Maize & Beans every School days. All this

School have put up a sign board under the auspicious of Hindu Council of Kenya in all our other projects,

HRSC tries to give prominence to Hindu Council of Kenya & have high hopes that other institutions who are

affiliated with HCK should also adopt this, so that Hindus contribution can be acknowledged everywhere &

recognized.

The Hindu Council of Kenya Kisumu Branch hosts Post Diwali Cultural Nite

On 17th November 2018, Hindu Council of Kenya – Kisumu Branch hosted a post Diwali cultural night for its member institutions, where by 14 institutions participated and presented different folks of India.

Gujarati folk, Kashmiri dance, Marathi folk dance – Laavni, Rajasthani dance, Punjabi bhangra, qawali, Ras and garba were presented.

This was followed by dinner. Some refreshments were also served while the program was going on.

The chief guest for the event was Mrs. Hansaben Narendra Shah, wife of late Mr. Narendra Gosar Shah, the founder member of Hindu Council of Kenya – Kisumu Branch and a backbone of Kisumu community.

The program was also attended by the National chairman of Hindu Council of Kenya, Mr. Kamal Gupta from Nairobi and his team. We also had delegates from various branches of Hindu Council.

More than 1200 people attended the show . We had around 150 participants.

The convenor of the program, Mrs. Shobhna.N.Shah said that,”we are fortunate enough to have inherited one of the richest cultures in the world. Let us keep spreading the fragrance of our culture by organizing such events now and again and strengthening our unity.”

The chairman Mr. Niyam Shah said that his main aim is to bring unity amongst communities and increase the bonding, which is only possible through social activities.

Our National chairman Mr. Kamal Gupta and his team were also very impressed by the performances and said that, “KISUMU HAS GOT TALENT.”

Our chief guest Mrs. Hansaben Narendra Shah, a multi talented lady from a very prominent family, was also very much honoured and happy to be with us.

The Hindu Council of Kenya held the First ever

Leadership Summit on the 24th of November at the Visa

Oshwal center. “ The Vision of the Hindu Council is to

create a platform for exchange of information, knowledge

and experience to build up leaders of tomorrow who

would build value for the community, the society and the

Country” said Mr. Kamal Gupta, National Chairman of the

Hindu Council. The National Chairman Mr. Kamal Gupta

further added that the event was very carefully designed

to bring the best of the minds together to inspire the new

generation. “It is for the first time that we brought three

different groups of distinguished panels – the

professionals, the entrepreneurs and their Excellency’s

the Ambassadors on the same time, at the same Venue

and at the same event. This made this event brilliantly

unique and distinctly creative in its character, said

Mr. Kamal Gupta.

The event started with the National Chairman Shri.

Kamal Gupta welcoming the Key note speaker Dr. Kevit

Desai, PS Ministry of Education. Dr. Desai very

elaborately captured the policies of the Government of

Kenya in building capacity and technical skills through

the various initiatives including the vocational training

institutes. The skills and capacity was the key resource in

building up the country’s economy and achieving the Big

Four strategy plan of the Government in its development

Agenda.

The event was attended over 400 people as per the

Convener of the event Mr. Surendra Bhatia. HCK was

honored to have a leading lights from the Community

speak at the event and HCK is grateful to all the

speakers for their time and ideas in building up the event,

Mr. Surendra Bhatia further added. The speakers

included Dr. Vimal Shah, Dr. Manoj Shah, Mrs. Geeta

Manek, Dr. Darshan Chandaria and Mr. Ramji Bhai

Varsani in the entrepreneurs panel which was

coordinated by Mr. Satyamoorthy. The Ambassadors

panel was coordinated by Mr. Rohtash Tulyani of the

Hindu Council and graced by His Excellency the

Ambassador of Hungary, His Excellency the Ambassador

of Ethiopia, and the Deputy High Commissioners of

United Kingdom and Republic of India, Ambassador of

Ethiopia also attended this great event. The

Professionals panel was coordinated by Mr. Abhishek

Rana and the distinguished speakers consisted of Mr. T

Ramamurthy CEO of Bidco, Mr. Rajesh Rao CEO of

Crown Berger, Mrs. Sumita Mukherjee Director of Raira

university and Mr. Tejinder Singh MD of Standard

Chartered Bank.

Chairman Mr. Kamal Gupta said that the event had

one more unique feature which was presentation of the

Hindu Ratna Awards. This was the first time the Hindu

Ratna awards were being presented to individuals and

communities who had made a difference to the people

and the country. Mr. Kamal Gupta said it was indeed a

pleasure to present to leading lights of the Community

like Dr. Manu Chandaria, Mr. Narendra Rawal (Guru), Mr.

N P Seth, Mr. Rasik Kantaria and Mr. KVSK Sastry,

individuals who have given exemplary services to the

community with the Hindu Ratna Awards. Hindu Council

also recognized key community and institution projects

which has created value in the last couple of years by

presenting them with the Hindu Ratna Awards. The

Hindu Ratna awards were coordinated by the Liaison

Director of the Hindu Council of Kenya Smt. Aradhana

Trivedi. The Institutions who were awarded Hindu Ratna

awards included Hindu Swyamsevak Sangh & Jain

Social Group for Relief and Welfare Activities, Shree

Jalaram Satsang Mandal & East African Ramgarhia

Board for Medical Services, BAPS Swaminarayan

Temple & Sri Kalyanavenkateswara Temple for Religious

Services, Shree Cutchi Lava Patel Samaj & Oshwal

Education & Relief Board for Educational Services.

The evening filled with ingredients of excellence in

Leadership, came to end with the Hindu Council National

General Secretary Mrs. Sujata Kotamaraju offering a vote

of thanks to all the community leaders who shared their

knowledge and experience, officials of different

communities who participated in making the event a

great success, the organizing team specially the

Business and Professionals Directorate, all the sponsors,

each and every hand and heart who had worked for the

success of the event.

SRI MURUGAN KOIL SOCIETY NAIROBI

It has been the dream of the community to have a temple for

Murugan known as Karthik swami in north India and Subramanya

swami in south India. There are several very famous Murugan

temples all over the world and by the Grace of Lord Muruga we

have a Murugan Temple in Nairobi the first of its kind in East and

West Africa.

Temples have been the most effective means of preserving our

culture and spiritual heritage. It is our prime responsibility to

maintain temples for the benefit of the generations to come.

Particularly for the community living outside India, how else our

children will come to know what temples are, how prayers are

offered at the temples and the significance of age old religious

practices. Temples also act as places of social gathering and

effective joint prayers.

It offers an opportunity to celebrate the age old religious festivals.

With the intention of putting up a Murugan Temple a group of

religious minded and enthusiastic people registered a society in the

name Sri Murugan Koil Society Nairobi in August 2016. The

Murugan temple started at a rented premises on Nduvu Ahamed

lane, off Second avenue parklands on 9th February 2017 the

auspicious Thai Poosam day. The stone idol of Vallabha Ganapathy

sculptured at Mahabalipuram, Chennai and the Pancha Loka idol of

Murugan made in Kumbakonam a famous temple town in

Tamilnadu, arrived on that day at site.

A very well qualified priest was recruited from Chennai to carry out

the daily rituals and Vedic prayers at the temple. We are indeed

very lucky to have Shri. Anantha narayanan as the temple priest. He

has undergone several years of Gurukula Veda pada and has

attained proficiency equal to a Master’s degree in this field.

With the support of devotees a WhatsApp group was formed in

which we have currently about four hundred members. The group is

used to post strictly only the temple programs.

The temple activities are carried out by a committed Managing

committee of seven members and a coordinating committee of four

lady members.

The temple celebrates the following monthly religious prayers apart

from the daily Rudrabhishekam for Vallabha Ganapathy.

In January 2018 we shifted to the Ground floor premises in the

same compound and constructed the Prayer hall and performed the

Balalaya Kumbhabhishekam at the new hall on 23rd September

2018.

This function was attended by over 600 devotees. This was followed

by a 48 days Mandala pooja culminating in the Mandalabhishekam

on 10th of November 2018.

We have come out with a scheme to give the opportunity for

everyone to contribute to this noble task of maintaining the temple

although a few well to do individuals would have gladly undertaken

this. The idea is to involve as many families as possible.

Under the MAPS scheme you are required to contribute sh5000 per

month towards maintenance of the temple. This contribution can

be made either monthly, quarterly, half yearly or yearly.

Those who cannot afford 5000 per month can contribute whatever

they can outside the MAPS.

ARUMUGANUKKU ARU DOLLAR

We have a long term plan to raise 6 Mn USD to procure land and

construct a community center cum Murugan temple and for this

purpose come out with a scheme known as Arumuganukku Aru

Dollar which means “ Donate six Dollars for the six faced Lord

Murugan”

Under this scheme we have come out with an E brochure which will

be circulated all over the world through our contacts, friends and

Tamil associations in different countries.

the details.

SAI RAM Dear Brothers and Sisters, Happy Ladies Day!

My dear sisters the female gender are indeed blessed that Baba has bestowed this particular day in celebration and recognition of the various roles we play in our lifetime as daughters, wives, mothers, mother-in-law and grandmothers and if lucky – even as great grandmothers! Today I would like to acknowledge the role of mothers in nurturing values and in guiding her children on to the right virtuous path in life. In fact, Baba applauds the role of a mother as being extremely significant for not only is she the pillar of the home, but also of society, of the nation at large and of humanity itself. He carries on to say that Motherhood is the most precious gift of God. Mothers are the makers of nation’s future or misfortune. If one wants to know how advanced a nation is, study the mothers. Are they free from fear and anxiety, are they full of love towards all, are they trained in fortitude and virtue? Baba’s sentiments about the importance of a Mother is brought out even more emphatically when He says and I quote “The love of a mother is much more than that of a father”. Dear brothers, all I can say is that you will have to work extra hard to match these sentiments of our dear Swami! It is important to note that though Baba marvels at the role of a Mother, he does not hesitate to state that in order to foster virtuous children the Mother should work on her mental self too. She should develop good thoughts, good words and good deeds. Her womb is symbolic to the Mother Earth. Just as the seed of thought is sown in it, so too is the fruit that it yields. We cannot expect sweet mangoes to yield from the bitter neem seed we might have sown! Furthermore, the Mother has the added duty to work on her dharma or responsibility of giving good training in moral values i.e. devotion and detachment to her children, right from childhood. She should not overlook the mistakes of her children. If their actions deem punishment, so it must be administered or else they can stray from the right path. Discipline in this context, can be compared to speed breakers erected onto the roads to control the speed of vehicles to ensure safety. So too, restrictions must be imposed upon the child’s freedom for his/her own safety before he/she goes astray and out of control.

Therefore, the first responsibility of discipline of a child starts with the Mother. If at all the Mother faces disobedience from her child it is mainly due to her failure of negligence to inculcate discipline when it needed to be installed in the early years of the child’s life. However, it is interesting to note that Baba does not overlook the effort, the other side of the coin has to make too - in this case - the child and how he/she has to reciprocate in this relationship of love and trust with his/her Mother. Baba has repeatedly stressed in numerous discourses about the importance of children to show gratitude to their Mothers for their unconditional love towards them. He says that even if the Mother is illiterate, the child must have utmost regard for the sacrifices and discomforts she has undergone during child bearing and otherwise - in order to give all the care and comfort to her child. In fact, He says that we should consider the teachings of the mother as the Veda itself! If a Mother suffers, you can never live in peace. In ancient times is was said that if a woman sheds tears, peace and prosperity in that family and house would ultimately vanish. Moreover, a Mother is compared to the visible manifestation of God. He contemplates further that if you have no love for the Mother who is physically present before you, how can you love the invisible Divine? In conclusion, dear Brothers and Sisters, I would like to reiterate that we, the children of our Mother Sai, are indeed very fortunate. Our Mother Sai is the best example of an ideal mother. Not only are we blessed with his endless grace of love, compassion, forgiveness and patience but also rebuked - sometimes with soft clidings but at other times with harsh, hard hiting reprimandation - in order to strengthen us out when we are out of line. We have to play our role in reciprocating and trusting Mother Sai’s grace and love for us at all times and in all circumstances. Thank You. Sai Ram Sister Jeeti Sura


MEDITATIOIN

Meditation and Yoga by Lata Prasad Kodukulla The two most powerful words that we often hear today are meditation and yoga.These words definitely have a major role to play in each and everyone's lives in today's fast paced world , where stress is also a very commonly used term even by children. Meditation is a term that can be defined as the practice of curbing one's thoughts to achieve inner peace. Yoga on the other hand means a union of the body, mind and soul. As it is said, Practice is the key to achieve one's goal and this holds true for meditation and yoga too.Practising meditation on a regular basis helps in both calming the mind and developing a good thought process.One of the basic ways of meditating is to choose a fixed spot at home and closing one's eyes and concentrate on breathing. One can say the word SO while breathing in and HUM while breathing out,in one's mind. The word SOHUM is a Sanskrit word meaning I am that.In Vedic philosophy it means identifying oneself with the Universe. It helps to quieten the mind. The best time to do meditation is in the morning and if possible between 4,00. and 6.00. am. Yoga is also to be preferably done in the morning. Pranayam or the breathing techniques are very useful and beneficial. Here are two basic pranayams that could

be practiced by people of age groups 13 years and above. 1. Bhastrika-is a breathing technique that involves rapid and forceful inhalation and exhalation.The person practising Bhastrika should breathe rapidly and the final exhalation is followed by a deepest possible inhalation. It strengthens our immune system. It should however be done under the supervision of a trained yoga teacher. 2. Kapaalbhati-Kapaal means forehead and bhati means illuminating. There is a glow in the forehead on continuous practice of this pranayama. It involves strong and forceful exhalations leading to automatic inhalations. It removes stress and also enhances blood circulation and digestion.Please note that yoga asanas and pranayams have to be done under strict supervision by yoga teachers. One can learn from the teachers and then practice them independently. It is highly recommended that today's youth should practise both yoga and meditation to be fit both physically and mentally

your email address, and I’ll send you the

application to fill, as well as when you will start.

The man replied “I don’t have a computer,

neither an email.”

I’m sorry, said the HR manager, if you don’t have

an email that means you do not exist. And who

doesn’t exist, cannot have the job. The man left

with no hope at all. He didn’t know what to do,

with only $10 US in his pocket.

He then decided to go to the supermarket and

buy a 10 KG tomato crate. He then sold the

tomatoes

in a door to door round. In less than two hours,

he succeeded to double his capital. He repeated

the

operation 3 times, and returned home with $60

US. The man realized that he can survive by this

way, and started to go everyday earlier, and

return late. Thus, his money doubles or triples

every

day. Shortly later, he bought a cart, then a truck,

and then he had his own fleet of delivery vehicles.

5 years later, the man is one of the biggest food

retailers in the US. He started to plan his family’s

future, and decided to have a life insurance.

He called an insurance broker, and chooses a

protection plan. When the conversation was

concluded, the broker asked him his email. The

man replied: “I don’t have an email.” The broker

replied curiously, you don’t have an email, and

yet have succeeded to build an

empire. Do you imagine what you could have

been if you had an email?

The man thought for a while, and replied: an

office boy!

The moral of this story:

1: Internet is not the solution to your life.

2: If you don’t have internet and you work hard

you can be a millionaire.

3: If you received this message by email, you are

closer to be an office boy, rather than a

MILLIONAIRE.
