NIDOS aims to strengthen the contribution of Scottish organisations to reducing inequality and poverty worldwide.

Facilitating networking and partnershipsWe’ve helped our members connect with each other as well as with key stakeholders from Scotland and beyond, enabling them to share experiences, build partnerships, and strengthen their work. At this year’s annual conference, Closing the Inequality Gap: In Scotland and Around the World, we teamed up with leading organisations in Scotland working to reduce poverty and inequality: IDEAS, Oxfam Scotland, The Poverty Alliance, SCIAF, the Scotland Malawi Partnership and the University of the West of Scotland. The event brought together nearly 200 delegates to share experiences between domestic and international groups. In her keynote address, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon emphasised Scotland’s commitment to implementing the new UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), tackling climate change, and helping developing countries grow in a fair and sustainable manner.

Increasing effectiveness and transparencyOur Effectiveness Programme offers a range of tools and resources on good practice and strengthening organisational effectiveness. Members have exclusive access to our Effectiveness Toolkit, a facilitated self-assessment tool, as well as our mentoring service which offers tailored, one-on-one sessions with experienced mentors. This year we’ve offered members information and support on strengthening their governance; partnership working; strategic planning and organisational development; monitoring, evaluation and learning; and transparency. We’ve also given members the opportunity to assess the quality and availability of information on their websites using the Bond/NIDOS Transparency Review.

Our Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) Working Group continued to facilitate in-depth discussions on a range of topics, including participatory indicator development and the quality of evidence in evaluation.

We also teamed up with Bond, the UK-wide network of international development organisations, and the International NGO Training and Resource Centre (INTRAC), to research how effectiveness tools and services increase organisational effectiveness and contribute to improved development outcomes. The findings from the research will help shape the future of our Effectiveness Programme.

“ NIDOS helps us network with other NGOs, liaise with donors and provides a great Effectiveness Toolkit. We started using this in 2012, with support from NIDOS staff. We developed and implemented a workplan, and now we’re monitoring our improved effectiveness. The Toolkit encouraged us to create a new vision and policies, improve transparency, and quickly and systematically modernise, professionalise and strengthen our rights-based approach. For example, we improved patient confidentiality in one project, use evaluation reports as conference papers, and help our partners to improve government services and inclusion. All this helped us pass DFID due diligence and get our first ever grants from DFID and the European Commission. ” James Wells, EMMS International

Providing fundraising advice and support Through training, information sessions, and tailored grant surgeries, we’ve helped our members build their skills and confidence in fundraising. We supported applicants to the third round of the Scottish Government’s Small Grants Programme, and organised opportunities for our members to access decision makers and funders, including the Scottish Government and the Department for International Development (DFID). We’ve also kept members up to date with current funding opportunities through our monthly newsletter.

Building members’ capacity and knowledgeThroughout the year we held training courses and workshops aimed at building members’ capacity and competencies across a range of specialisms, including project management, logical frameworks, theory of change, effective budgeting, core funding, social media, and media training.

Raising the profile of our membersThis year we publicised more than 150 events, news items, and vacancies on behalf of members through our website, social media, and newsletter. We re-launched our monthly newsletter, NIDOS News, in a new, easier to read format with updated content and special features, as well as more space for members to promote their own news and events.

Collectively influencing policymakers We’ve brought our members together to raise policymakers’ awareness of the value of international development. Following the general election in May 2015 we held a reception in Westminster for NIDOS members and new Scottish MPs, as well as an event in Glasgow with Patrick Grady MSP, the Scottish National Party’s spokesperson on international development and former Vice-Chair of NIDOS, on how Scottish MPs can help NGOs further their objectives. Ahead of the Scottish Parliament elections in May 2016, we collaborated with the Scotland Malawi Partnership and the Scottish Fair Trade Forum to circulate a list of manifesto asks to the main political parties represented in Parliament. We also facilitated several consultation responses on behalf of members, including the International Development Committee, the European and External Relations Committee and DFID’s Civil Society Partnership Review.

“ I couldn’t rate the service and support offered by the mentor any higher - it was outstanding. ” Martin Rhodes, Scottish Fair Trade Forum

“ Being a member of NIDOS brings us into contact with a wide group of NGOs working in the same field as us through emails, telephone calls, workshops, seminars, webinars and conferences. As a very small charity it is very much appreciated that support and advice are so easily obtained. We have found information-sharing about impact evaluation through the NIDOS Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning group particularly useful. We hope to use that group to inform our ongoing M&E work. ” Mamie Martin Fund

“ For a very small new charity like ours, the grant application surgery is an invaluable service. ” Joanna Pearce, Zambia Therapeutic Art

“ The Scotland Malawi Partnership enjoys a close working relationship with NIDOS, especially on joint policy work where we have had good success across a number of fronts in the last year, including at the Closing the Inequality Gap conference, through the Scottish Parliament elections, and in Scotland’s delivery of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Feedback from members, partners, government and key stakeholders continues to show that having two networks committed to working closely and constructively together, very much strengthens our overall impact.” David Hope-Jones, Scotland Malawi Partnership

Championing policy coherence for development (PCD)We’ve worked with members to call for a more policy coherent approach to international development. With the support of SCIAF and Oxfam Scotland we published a new paper, Sub-State International Development Policy and Programmes: Lessons for Scotland. We met with MSPs from all parties to discuss our 2014 report on PCD in Europe, and we held events in the Scottish Parliament and at the Scottish Government to explore how PCD works in other European countries.
