2nd European GeoInformation & Exhibition, Berlin, 20 – 22 June 2017

“Big Data as a Key for Future GeoInformation Services”

More than 300 attendees are expected to attend to this year’s edition. The event will be organised again in cooperation with the Bundeswehr GeoInformation Service, Germany and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), USA as well as held under the patronage of the Ministry of Defence, Germany (requested).

The influence and effect of Big Data, with all its relevant aspects, will be broadly discussed. This will include Requirements and Architectures, taking into account existing or desired Strategies and Methods, focusing on specificities of Analytics of Data in the subject areas of the Bundeswehr GeoInformation Service (BGIS). Finally, the Symposium will cover the topic of optimized Future GeoInformation Services in a rapidly changing environment.

The symposium wants to focus especially on current developments and challenges, and will provide an outlook for the future. Gov-ernmental, Scientific as well as Industry stakeholders need to remain “on the ball” regarding any new developments. As the field of Big Data rapidly evolves further, the organizational position of the BGIS in the Bundeswehr will also change as it will soon be placed organizationally under the Bundeswehr Cyber and Information domain, opening up new ways and opportunities for the BGIS and the Bundeswehr.

Featured Theme Tracks:

Requirements and Architectures

The Management of Big Data brings up different questions depending on the type of existing standardized solutions. How can big data be managed and stored cost-effectively? How do you build architecture according to the respective requirements? An optimized use of especially unstructured big data becomes as important as the reduction of complexity. But also energy efficiency, e.g. in order to meet a demand for increasing need in cooling capabilities, as well as flexibility and scalability of an (IT-) infrastructure, are important aspects to suit the needs of users.

Strategies and Methods

Software needs to be designed according to user needs. The focus must be on concepts for implementation in existing work-flows as well as the big advantages of data fusion. Transferring data into actionable information software must allow us to keep processes and workflows as simple as possible while handling all relevant data entirely, structured and unstructured. Software has to be adapted to needs and conditions as they arise with modu-lar cloud and open standard data solutions, so that resources are available quickly and flexibly.

Analytics of Environmental and Geospatial Data

Especially when dealing with environmental and geospatial data, Big Data characteristics such as validity and integrity have to be considered. Big Data analytics can also offer improved options in the field of geointelligence for the benefit of the responsible governmental agencies. The tremendously rising amount of data, coming from its increasing availability and easy collection, present big challenges in analyzing all of it. Specialized software solutions must be implemented to analyze specific data, to allow automated processing and a very detailed view on valuable and necessary information hidden in a pile of data.

GeoInformation Services

Optimized GeoInformation Services based on geospatial and environmental data either exist already or will become increas-ingly available. The use of environmental and geospatial data in general GeoInformation services, in demand for all Armed Forces, poses different and very specific challenges regarding actionable Big Data and the quality of services. Time becomes just as im-portant as quality-assured analytics, especially for military needs. Big data has to meet the validity and verification needs regarding the essential user. All this has to be done under cyber security aspects. This session focuses also on new approaches to generate and structure these GeoInformation Services.

Featured Speakers:

Lieutenant General Martin Schelleis, Chief of the German Armed Forces Joint Support Service

Major General Ludwig Leinhos, designated Chief of the German Armed Forces Cyber Information Domain Service

Professor Dr. Stefan Dech, Professor/Chair Holder, Institute of Geography and Geology (DFD) (DEU)

Professor Dr. Key Pousttchi, Professor/Chair Holder, University of Potsdam (DEU)

TechNet Europe, Stockholm, 9 – 11 October 2017

“Cyber Capabilities in Hybrid Warfare Scenarios”

TechNet Europe is AFCEA Europe’s final major conference and exhibition of 2017. More than 300 attendees are expected to attend to this year’s edition. The event will be organised in cooperation with the AFCEA Stockholm Chapter and will be held under the patronage of the Ministry of Defence, Sweden (confirmed).

With the increasing tensions in the European area, Civil-Military Cooperation is more important than ever. After the fall of the Soviet Union, Europe had seen more than 20 years of increasing peace and stability. Armed conflicts at the European borders seemed unlikely to occur. This led to major defence budget cuts (peace dividend) and a society that viewed management of hybrid crises not to be a high priority. With the current deteriorating situation at the European borders, there is a need to study scenarios including those that could end up in war-like situations. This emphasises the need for an appropriate Civil-Military Cooperation in order to master any rapid and antagonistic development.

This is an event that will bring agencies, academia and industry together to boost knowledge on cyber related topics connected to national security scenarios. During the event, exchange ideas, network, increase knowledge and understand the main challenges in the cyber arena that our nations are facing today.
