More than 2,300 Australian brides (and a few grooms) responded to our survey — the biggest in the country. The results featured in the following pages will give you and your business an exclusive insight into the minds of soon-to-be brides.

Between August and September 2016,
Australia’s most popular wedding
website, EasyWeddings.com.au,
conducted its annual wedding survey.
More than 2,300 Australian couples shared their wedding planning experiences, telling us everything from how long they were engaged and how much they spent on their honeymoons, to their thoughts on same-sex marriage and, of course, the overall costs of their big day.
These results paint the most accurate, up-to-date and authoritative picture of Australia’s wedding industry and modern couples.

are willing to marry on a work day if it falls on a particularly

• As a wedding guest, 88% of couples believe a wedding gift of up to $250 is appropriate for close friends and family, while 60% consider a gift of about $100 is appropriate for others.

Of the same-sex couples who completed our survey, 59% said they were undecided about whether to wait for same-sex marriage to be legalised in Australia before marrying. 25% said they wouldn’t wait and would marry in a civil ceremony beforehand, while 9% said they would wait until it is legalised. 7% said they wouldn’t wait and would marry beforehand overseas in a country where same-sex marriage is legally recognised.

Shopping for a wedding dress is, without doubt, one of the highlights of planning a wedding. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience that is often cited as a bride’s favourite part of the wedding planning process.

At the heart of any wedding is the wedding ceremony, which is the legal requirement for a marriage to be considered official. Without a celebrant/officiant to perform this important ritual, there is no wedding.

• 74% of all marriages are performed by a civil celebrant*;
• 39% of couples consider their wedding ceremony the most important feature of their wedding day; 32% say it’s their wedding reception; 13% say it’s their guests, while 12% say it’s the dress. 4% cited other things such as their honeymoon.

It is no surprise that couples consider their wedding day transport to be an important part of their special day. Arriving in style is indeed the trend, with many couples even opting to book different styles of transport for the bride and groom. Additionally, the style of transport is often carefully considered as many couples will include their wedding car or transport in their wedding photographs.

Wedding styling trends are highly-influenced by digital platforms such as social media, blogs, and online magazines. As a result there is a growing emphasis on taking styling trends to a new level, with many modern brides opting to include decorations at their ceremony and reception venues, such as flower walls, decorated chandeliers, dessert tables and unique centrepieces for the guest and bridal tables.

Many brides will also cover the cost of their bridesmaids’ dresses, and in some cases, their hair, makeup, jewellery and shoes too.
