Announcing: "The Gorge Hops and Hogs Fest 2018" When the scent of blooming cherry blossoms fade into the hickory sweet aroma of mouth-watering BBQ, it's time for the area's tastiest summer celebration, The Gorge Hops and Hogs Fest presented by The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce and Sedition Brewing Co. The family-friendly event occurring, on June 16th at Lewis and Clark Park Festival Park, will include a BBQ cooking competition, tasting opportunities, BBQ-related products, PNW Craft Beer tent, beer yoga, on-site vendors, live entertainment, backyard games and a kids' zone. The Gorge Hops and Hogs Fest promises to pair the lure of fire-roasted cooking with good, old-fashioned competition. Local pit masters are encouraged to join in on the fun! There will be Beef Tri-Tip and Pork Rib competitions. A panel of celebrity grillers will judge the competition and awards will be presented to the best of the best. For more information and applications, go to www.gorgehopsandhogs.com. The competitive spirit will be the backbone of this tribute to this great American pastime. There are some great prizes: A Traeger Grill from TumALum Lumber will be the People’s Choice prize, The Grand Champion will win a guided fishing trip from Outcatching.com with rooms provided by Cousins’ Country Inn plus goodies from Columbia River Knife and Tool. For those looking to sample barbecue fare, the competition includes People’s Choice judging. Purchase as many tickets as you like for $1 each and cast your vote. One ticket equals one vote. It's an opportunity for you to pick your favorites and cheer them on. Another option for attendees is to purchase a commemorative mug and tokens for the Hops tent, which is open to anyone over the age of 21. Tickets to the Hops Tent are available in advance online at www.gorgehopsandhogs.com. They will also be sold at the event for $20. A portion of the proceeds from this years' event benefit the Columbia Gorge Veterans Museum. The museum will be hosting a new car show ‘All Hail to the Jeep’ on Sunday, June 17th, with music by “Got Your Six ~ The Veterans Band.” We've got a great sponsorship package and welcome any businesses that would like to be a part of our newest signature event. It's a great opportunity for exposure and to be a part of a worthy cause. Come out and join us for a great time, eat some BBQ, cheer on the teams, play our many family friendly games, drink some beer and shop with the vendors! Admission to the event site is free.

A Word from the BoardWOW! It’s June and we are half way through the year. I have one question for you today. Have you used
your membership benefits? The Chamber provides a host of member benefits at a reasonable cost. Use the Tiered Dues breakdown
list in your membership packet and use it as a checklist throughout the year to make sure you are getting the most out of your investment. If you were paying for each benefit individually, your cost would range from $2,350 to $19,150. However, depending on your membership level, your actual costs range from $216 to $10,000. If we breakdown your membership investment as a monthly expense, you maybe paying as little at $18 per month or 60 cents a day for these benefits. That is some incredible savings!
Many of your benefits are automatic, such as being listed in the Chamber Directory and website, preferential referral service, receiving the Member Focus monthly newsletter, weekly eblast advertising opportunities, two great monthly networking events (Business After Hours on the third Thursday and Coffee Connections on the fourth Tuesday), and the Power Breakfast, for which we invite speakers to present assorted topics relevant to your business.
The Chamber also keeps an eye on local, state, and national issues that could influence your business and provides you with updates, press releases, and breaking news via email.
Some benefits come with a small cost attached. For instance, you may provide copies of a single sheet flyer to be placed in packets which are sent out to anyone who is looking to relocate and requests information about our community. Since the chamber sends out an average of 60 Relocation Packets each year, this gives you the opportunity to make your business “front and center” to prospective residents for as little as .50 cents per packet. Or, how about a newsletter insert? For an investment of $50.00 or less (based on your membership level), you can provide a full-paged (both sides) newsletter ad that is circulated to over 500 people. Ten cents per recipient is darn cheap advertising!
For these, and so many more services and products which are provided by your chamber and included in your membership benefits, I highly encourage you to review your benefits and utilize the tools made available. Our goal is to provide value to our members through advocacy, leadership and by promoting a vigorous economic climate for business, community, tourism, and education.
If there is something you are looking for in your membership that is not being provided, or ideas that may enhance our current programs and products, please let us know. We value your input and your feedback helps us to strengthen our benefits and improve our service.

Community KudosWork Begins on Mental Health Complex
After eight years of planning and setbacks, The Mid-Columbia Center for Living is getting started on its community mental health facility at 1040 Webber Street in The Dalles. The facility will allow all the center’s services to operate under one roof. The architectural design is a wood-framed two-story family clinic, parking and green space totalling about 22,639 square feet.
Activity and group rooms will be on the first floor, as well as a clinic and lobby, offices and a conference room. The second floor will theoretically house space for youth group, a lobby, meeting rooms, and room for another clinic or office. The planned facility can accomodate an occupancy of nearly 600 people. The plan was submitted by Griffin Construction, LLC., the company contracted for the project.
The center provides integrated physical and behavioral health services for people with mental illness, substance abuse and intellectual and developmental disabilities. The center currently serves over 2,000 adults, children and families across locations in The Dalles, Moro and Hood River.
“People living with persistent mental health and substance abuse issues die anywhere from 25-35 years earlier than the general population. Many of the clients we serve also struggle with chronic health conditions and have difficulty getting to regular physical health appointments. Providing wraparound mental health and primary care [enables] us to treat ‘the whole’ person and ultimately help to extend peoples’ lives” Barbara Seatter., executive director for the center told the Chronicle earlier.
Representatives from Center for Living’s community partners gave speeches at the May 22 ground breaking. Ethel Marquez, a member of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs who has been an employee at the center for 14 years and counting, blessed the construction site before the ground was officially broken. “I thought it was appropriate to do a smudge blessing, which is for blessing the earth that this building is going to be built on,” she said.
The groundbreaking was seen as a big triumph
for the center and its community partners because numerous setbacks have held up the project for years. The center first discussed the prospect of a new community mental health facility with architects in 2010, but the idea had been in place for a long time before that, Seatter said.
County commissioner and MCCFL board member Scott Hege asked all center employees in the small crowd of 30 or so gathered for the groundbreaking to raise their hands. A large portion did. Then, he said “if you thought this project was never going to happen, keep your hands up,” and many laughed but kept their hands raised high.
Wasco County had received $2 million for the new facility in 2015 from a Community Development Block Grant, a federal program that provides resources to local governments to address a range of community development needs, such as affordable housing or infrastructure that creates jobs. Since this grant can only be awarded to government agencies, Wasco County applied on the center’s behalf. As the grant recipient, the county officially owns the new facility for the first five years of the project. “[Wasco County] has really come through at the 11th hour,” Seatter said at the groundbreaking.
Before the ground was officially broken, she took a moment to thank the community for their support and patience. “You can’t just go in and see one of us and get a band-aid…it’s complicated and sometimes it takes years for people to get the help they need to recover, and we want to be here for those people,” she said.
MCCFL board members, staff and community partners officially break ground on the site for their new mental health facility.

Welcome Bags for Visitors Summertime . . . sleeping in . . . lazy days at the pool or the beach . . . no school . . . the smell of freshly-cut grass . . . a frosty glass of lemonade . . . the county fair . . . double-headers “under the lights” at the ballpark . . . Some of you remember your parents or grandparents singing “In the Good Old Summertime” with a nostalgic look in their eyes, and most of us have sung at least the first line or two of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.” Well, it is Summertime once again in The Dalles, which finds us gearing up for the 67th annual Ted Walker Swim Meet and hosting the 2018 District Little League All Stars tournament. Both of these events bring hundreds of young athletes and their families into The Dalles and allows us the opportunities of showcasing our great community and extending our friendly invitation to Explore the Dalles. The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce will be assembling welcome bags to our visiting athletes (1,000+ athletes between the two events) and would like to invite you to represent your business with donations of coupons, small give-a-ways, discounts, etc. This is a great way to bring our visitors into your business, giving you the opportunity of showing off your brand of The Dalles Hometown Hospitality!!

We are deeply committed to the communities we serve and it’s an honor to help local citizens revitalize their downtown areas,” said Jay Levine, President & CEO, OneMain Financial. “Celebrating these transformational projects alongside neighbors and friends is a key element of these projects. Our local branches offer community members assistance in improving their financial health, and “Made on Main Street” is an extension of our positive footprint to help make meaningful changes. Together, we hope to build stronger communities by improving the places where we live and work.” “Made on Main Street” organizers encouraged local changemakers to submit proposals for innovative ideas that would enhance their community. The winning Main Street organizations are RAILmesa (Ariz.), Main Street Brunswick (Ga.), Charlotte Rising (Mich.), Downtown Painesville (Ohio), The Dalles Main Street (Ore.), and Historic Downtown Prosser Association (Wash.). Main Street America, a program of the National Main Street Center whose mission is to build vibrant neighborhoods and thriving local economies, selected the winners. “We received nearly 60 applications and it was exciting to see the level of creativity and thoughtfulness that went into the proposals for each
project,” said Patrice Frey, National Main Street Center President & CEO. “While it was difficult to select only six communities, our decisions were based on the ability of local leaders to roll up their sleeves and engage with community members to create long-term economic improvement through a small, creative revitalization project.” The winners’ proposals outlined how they will invest the money. RAILmesa in Mesa, Arizona, will help expand access to their all-volunteer community maker space, Heartsync Labs, by holding community classes, upgrading the physical space, and purchasing new tools. Main Street Brunswick in Brunswick, Georgia, plans to improve streetscapes by installing aesthetically pleasing planters, new trash receptacles, and bike racks for their bicycle-enthusiast community. Charlotte Rising in Charlotte, Michigan, outlined a proposal to transform a vacant lot into a pocket park that will host events and public programs including outdoor classes, yoga, open mic nights, and more. Ohio based organization, Downtown Painesville, will create and manage a landscaped public space with designated seating in and around their community’s beloved historic Gage House, thereby creating the only park and seating area in that part of the downtown district. The Dalles Main Street in The Dalles, Oregon will improve their downtown aesthetics by restoring historic neon signs, partnering with local business to display them, and creating a walking tour app to connect the various sites. Finally, in Processor, Washington, the Historic Downtown Prosser Association will work with a variety of local partners and a large group of volunteers and lead a two-day downtown beautification blitz, replacing non-functioning elements with new banner poles, planters, and trash receptacles. “Made on Main Street” organizers will work with winning organizations to host a community celebration event in each community. The events, hosted by OneMain Financial, will take place this Summer and Fall and will include free, family-friendly activities, food and fun.
