Information on poster format will be sent to those presenters making poster present- aYons. Abstracts must conform to the format described under Abstract Information. A single study should be presented in one abstract (unless the data are mas- sive and of great importance). In previous years, re- viewers have rejected good studies split into 2-3 abstracts. Because of publisher deadlines, resubmis- sion will not be allowed. If you have never written an abstract before, please ask someone who has had this experience to review your paper so you can make any necessary changes wore submission. Abstracts MUST be received in my office by Sep- tember 10, 1991 to be considered for presentation. Authors whose papers are accepted for presentation will be notified in November, 1991. Notification may be delayed if the submitter did not follow instruc- tions (e.g., failed to enclose self-addressed stamped envelope). Abstracts must be accompanied by fwo different “Authorization for Publication” forms. Also, to de- fray the costs of secretarial services involved in pro- cessing the abstracts, we are asking for a $10 check made payable to the SOCIETY FOR ADOLESCENT MEDICINE to accompany each abstract submitted. Piease do not hesitate to contact me or my sec- retary at 617-735-7170 if you have any questions or problems. I look forward to a high-quality scientific program. Sincerely, S. Sincerely yours, David W. Kaplan, M.D., FSAM Director of Programs

Dear Colleague and SAM Member:

For the 1992 Scientific Program, we will be trying a new format for the presentation of research-a general plenary session as well as concurrent ses- sions that are topically related. As in previous years, there wii be two averxles for presentation: (1) a ten- minute paper presentation; and (2) a poster presen- tation of a case or a series of lases. Abstracts will be reviewed anonymously by a panel of Ph.D.s and M.D.s. The final selections will be based upon the reviewers’ ratings. Research abstracts may vary widely to include any area of adolescent investiga- tion. However, the paper itself cannot have been pre- sented at a national meeting or have appeared as a publication prior to our March meeting.

Case material review will be based upon whether cases present new or controversiai findings likely to stimulate research. These abstracts will be sbject to the same critical review of methodology and clarity as are research papers. All cases (and small series) which are accepted will be presented in the poster sasion.

All papers for presentation should be ten minutes in Fcrhgth followed by a five-minute question-and- answer period.

Each abstract form holds more than 250 words. Tables are permitted within the space. To make the abstracts readable, please use a font similar in size and spacing to elite type; for example, on a laser printer, Courier 10 point, 12 pitch; Courier 12 point, 10 pitch; Times Roman 10 point; or Times Roman 12 point. Abstracts that do not conform to the instmr- tions will not be considered for selection. Do not split a single study into multiple abstracts (unless the data are massive and of great im- portance). In the past, abstracts have been re- jected by reviewers when the same study was divided into 2-3 abstracts. Resubmission will not be allowed. Additional abstract forms may be obtained from the Society’s executive office at Suite #120, 19401 E. U.S. Highway 40, Independence, MO 64055 or by telephoning 816-795TEEll. If ycu plan to submit abstracts, please ask for extra forms early; mail is somewhat slow. Enclose five (5) Xerox copies of the original ab- stract (as typed on the abstract reproduction form). The typist should prepare seven (7) double- spaced, “blind” copies of the abstract. Identify the paper by TITLE ONLY (no names of authors or institutions should be listed). Be sure that identifying information is not included in the text of the abstract. Complete and return BOTH the Authorization for Publication Forms (Form A and Form B). Note that these are different forms-Form A ad- dresses the instance when the abstract is ac- cepted; Form B when the abstract is NOT accepted for presentation and thus is read by title only. Authorization Form A MUST be signed (this covers an accepted abstract). Should the authcr not wish the paper to be published if it is not .accepted, indicate this PROMI- NENTLY on Form B (e.g., write across the page in red ink). Form B must be sent in regardless. Please enclose a check made payable to the SO- CIETY FOR ADOLESCENT MEDICINE for $10 for each abstract submit&d.

Selection of Abstracts Authors whose abstracts are accepted for presen- tation will be notified in November, 1991. Authors of papers that will be read by title only will also be notified at that time. Only the first author will be contacted.
