This weekend, we honor the memory of two of the Music School’s founding supporters:

Harriet Ward

who set an example for us all as a life-long learner, a wonderful musician,

and an enthusiastic cheerleader, and

Duncan McGowan

who found this building in 1987 and created a wonderful home for the Music School here.

On the cover:Now 170 voices strong, the Songweavers are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year. This early picture (c. 1993) includes many women who are still singing in the group, as well as founder Carolyn Parrott (front row, 3rd from left) who is retiring this year. Join us for the Songweavers spring concert, “Gave us a Song to Sing,” at 4 pm at South Church, April 10, as well as a celebration of Carolyn’s career on April 14, 5-7 pm at the Music School. Welcome to Anniversary Weekend 2011!

Recently I was fortunate to hear the amazing musician Bobby McFerrin explain how he is able to move so easily between jazz improvisation, symphony conducting and his own unique vocal creations. He spoke of growing up surrounded by a wealth of “musical languages:” his father’s operatic career, Harlem’s rich jazz history, and the popular music of the 60’s. “When you can speak all the languages, you can just communicate with more friends.” What a great motto for life and for music.

This weekend, we’re excited to converse with you in many musical styles, reflective of the great communication that our faculty, students and audience members enjoy every day. We are so blessed to have many composers on our faculty, five of whom we’re featuring Friday night. You’ll notice lots of cross-pollination on that concert—a hallmark of the Music School’s history has been the great friendships between our faculty musicians, which has made possible some pretty amazing compositions and performances. As faculty members, we’ve been excited to share this mix of musical languages with our students. You might see some students performing multiple times on Saturday, moving easily from Beethoven to a jazz ensemble to a rousing folk music medley, laughing as they run to the next recital with their Music School buddies.

As a “home for musical friendships,” our musical language is inclusive and encompassing, which has in turn created a wonderful community here. We thank you all for your support and hope you have a wonderful, celebratory weekend.

Sincerely,

Peggy Senter president and founder

About the composers

Page 9: Anniversary Weekend - danart1.weebly.comdanart1.weebly.com/uploads/1/9/0/1/1901465/_anniversary_weekend... · Welcome to Anniversary Weekend 2011! ... Harlem’s rich jazz history,

David Surette is highly regarded throughout New England and beyond for his work on the mandolin, guitar (both flatpick and fingerstyle), and bouzouki; Sing Out Magazine wrote that "Surette's playing is always inventive, and sets a new standard for traditional instrumentalists." He and his wife, Susie Burke, have performed together for 20 years, recording several albums and building a reputation as one of New England’s top folk duos. Surette was a founding member of the Airdance band with fiddler Rodney Miller, with whom he recorded four albums and toured nationally. He has also released five critically-acclaimed solo CDs; his most recent solo release, Sun Dog, is a collection of original guitar solos. He is also an experienced teacher, and coordinates folk music programming and teaches regularly at the Concord Community Music School.

David Tonkin has studied jazz guitar with Ed Cory, Jay Azzolina, and Randy Roos. Chair of the Music School’s Jazz Department, he has worked with the NH Artists in the Schools Program, led workshops at the Lincoln Center Institute at Dartmouth College, and taught at UNH Manchester. He performs throughout New England, and at places such as The Blue Note in NYC and at the Saratoga Jazz Festival. Founder of the David Tonkin Group and Tonkin Toys, he has also performed with Tiger Okoshi and Delfeayo Marsalis. An active composer, his work has been heard on radio and television throughout the area.

Frank Wallace is one of the most prolific guitarist-composers of our time. His music has been called “contemporary musical emancipation” by Frank Oteri of NewMusicBox.org. With echoes of blues, medieval, jazz, Latin, and classical music from Ravel to avant garde, Wallace’s compositions showcase the classical guitar in solo, duo, trio and quartet, as well as in chamber works with voice, flute and cello. In the past ten years, Wallace has written over ninety songs, most of them in groups (cycles) ranging from six to fifteen songs. The richness and complexity of his song accompaniments and his compelling vocal melodies highlight the influence of his mentors, from Dowland to Schubert to Britten. A master of self-accompanied song, Wallace specializes in contemporary music, touring internationally both as a soloist and with mezzo-soprano Nancy Knowles as Duo LiveOak. In Boston, Wallace directs the new music Festival 21, and in New York City he co-directs the Second Sundays Classical Guitar Series at Roger Smith Arts. “He is an impressive talent in every respect; he is a strong guitarist, a composer with a distinct voice, and a confident vocalist.”—Soundboard

Orchard SocietyIn the early years of the Music School, under the flowering apple tree at the Kimball Jenkins Estate, there were many conversations about the future. Today that tree has become an orchard -- a wonderful community of musicians. The Music School’s Orchard Society includes friends, students, parents, faculty, and trustees concerned with the tending of that orchard -- now and in the future. They have made multi-year pledges to our Sustainability Campaign and they serve as shining examples of belief in our ongoing mission of artistic excellence and access for all.

Access for AllPerformathon

Birthday Cake ServedNoonCommunity RoomHelp celebrate with our annual cake cutting (and eating)!

First presented in 1988, the annual Performathon involves scores of Music School students performing virtually non-stop in both the Community Room and Recital Hall throughout the day to support the Financial Aid Fund. Ranging in age from young children to adults, from beginners to advanced musicians, students will perform as soloists and in ensembles – classical, jazz, popular, and folk music.

You are invited to drop in for part or all of the day’s performances. And, if you like what you hear, we invite you to make a gift to support the Music School’s Financial Aid Fund. The goal for the day is $15,000. (Pledge Central is just down the hall from the Community Room, or drop your gift in the green bowl at performances.)

True to its mission to make music accessible to everyone, the School has offered students financial aid since its first year, beginning with just $250 to help three students. Beginning in 1998, the School’s Music in the Community Initiative (MICI) proactively expanded that mission of access by forming partnerships with human service agencies and public schools to serve students who could not study at the Music School because of income or disability (please see p. 11 and p. 32 in the Season Program Book for a list of MICI partners and funders). This year, the $110,000 Financial Aid Fund that is supporting 149 students, plus the $100,000 in contributed income that funds 325 weekly students in our Music in the Community Initiative, greatly expands access for students from low income families, by providing 44 percent of our 1400 students with free or reduced-cost instruction.

The Performathon is the single most important fund-raising event of the year for the Music School’s Financial Aid Fund. It complements generous gifts from:

“I’m writing to express my gratitude for the assistance my family has received from your financial aid program. The benefits of music have long been known but for my child, who has Asberger’s Syndrome, the benefits are much greater—and very necessary—for his development. I knew that he loved music and that Heather’s class, with all of the dancing and singing, along with her kindness and patience, were helping him. Now thanks to John, he feels good about drumming, even though he has to work hard to stay focused. It has increased his self esteem to know he is able to do something when so many things in his life right now are difficult for him.”
