„ICE-CLIMATE EDUCATION“ON THE MOVE

Ann Maria Piho2012

ARCTIC POPULATION

There live approximately 4 million people, including more than 30 indigenous people eg Chukchi, Nenets, Yakut, Lapps, Eskimosetc.

Activities can be categorized into two groups:1)Sea  Peoples2)Elk Peoples

These peoples have lived continuously in the Arctic for thousands of years and are facing major environmental change

NENETS

Samoyed peoples of the North-European and West Siberian tundra and forest tundra.

Population of approximately 41 000th.

Traditional areas of activity include reindeer, hunting and fishing.

Today herders still move some 300 000 animals between winter grounds near the treeline and summer pastures lining the Kara Sea.

ETHNIC SURVIVAL IS ENDANGERED, WHY? Globalization; Climate change; Endangered language and culture; Small population; Split-up/dispersion; Historical influences; Development of the oil industry.

OIL INDUSTRY AND THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ON INDIGENOUS PEOPLES

Pollution of rivers; Deforestation; Excessive numbers of people; Nature pollution/contamination; Global warming; Reduced fish stocks and fair game multiplicity. Few suitable pastures for reindeer; Endangers the lives and culture of indigenous

people.

DOES THE CHANGES IN ARCTIC AFFECT US AS WELL?

Yes, if the extent of the projected climate changes continue, this will result in serious consequences for us all.

Less snow cover means that the Earth absorbs more solar energy, and Ocean currents are shifting.

Sea levels will rise. Climate change affects weather

and agricultural production.

IS CLIMATE CHANGE  PROVEN?

WHERE DO WE GET OUR ENERGY AND GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSION

SOLUTIONS TO CLIMATE CHANGE AND PEAK OLI

Looking at the top of the oil- it looks rather surrogates - tar sands, pumping beneath the Antarctic, biofuels, coal making to liquid fuel.

If rich countries (including Estonia) will not reduce dependence on oil, the wars for resources will be kept and the climate catastrophe is unavoidable.

When analysing the peak oil and climate change problems together then we should redesign the whole system - low power consumption,  enduring and local systems are the only viable future.

SOLUTIONS

Green construction  and renovation, healthier,

environmentally friendlier, more energy efficient housing. Local food -

sustainably grown food, home environment, supported by agricultural.

Appropriate technologies, modern and efficient technologies.

It's an action: You can't change the world, but you can change yourself !!!
