We humans like to think of ourselves as a special bunch, but it turns out wehave plenty in common with other animals.
Math? A monkey can do it .
Tool use? Hey, even birds have mastered that .
Culture? Sorry, folks —chimps have it , too.
Here’s a list of some of the top parallels between humans and our animal kin.You may be surprised at how similar we are to even our distant relat ions.
The Nut-cracker
The researchers studied 45 chimpanzees f rom three dif ferent groups for the2008, 2009 and 2010 nut -cracking seasons, as they use tools to open kola nutsf rom a t ropical Af rican t ree of the same name. The chimps use hard“nutcrackers,” which they craf t f rom materials they f ind in their environment , tobreak the skin of these nuts against t ree root “anvils.” The nuts are hard atthe beginning of the season, becoming sof ter and easier to crack open overt ime.
