Jane Austen the Great British Novelist

Jane Austen was born in Steventon, Hampshire, where her father was a rector. She

was the second daughter and seventh child in a family of eight. The Austens did not lose a

single one of their children.

She was born and grew up in Hampshire. On her father's unexpected retirement, the

family sold off everything, including Jane's piano, and moved to Bath. Jane, aged twenty-five,

and Cassandra, her elder sister, aged twenty-eight followed their parents. Jane missed her

friends and the countryside so much that she abandoned her literary career for a decade.

Jane Austen was mostly educated at home, and irregularly at school, but she received a

broader education than many women of her time. She started to write to entertain her family

as a child.

Rev. George Austen supported his daughter's writing aspirations, bought her paper and

a writing desk, and tried to help her get a publisher. In 1809 they moved to a large cottage in

the village of Chawton. This was the place where Austen felt most at home. She never

married, she never had a room of her own, but her social life was active and she had romantic

dreams. Jane Austen focused on middle-class life in the countryside with humor and

understanding. Of her six great novels, four were published anonymously during her lifetime.

Jane Austen was buried in Winchester Cathedral. Her sister Cassandra destroyed many

of her sister's letters; one hundred sixty survived but none written earlier than her twentieth

birthday.

Sixty-four years ago, when I was a small boy of eight, there were very few cars and

very few lorries on the roads and we went everywhere by train. Our roads were clean and

uncrowded, and in our cities the air was not polluted. It was a lovely world to live in, but the

motor-car has ruined it.

It has also ruined us. Instead of walking to school nearly every child today is taken to

school in a car. Everyone goes everywhere by car these days. The flood of motor-cars and

trucks onto the roads is a tragedy for the environment and for our health.

When I was young we all loved our train journeys. We used to stand for hours beside

the railway line waiting for the next one to come rushing past. We also collected pictures of

them on cigarette-boxes. Nowadays children love motor-cars instead, horrible noisy machines

made of steel that kill thousands of people every year.

I only hope that in the end our roads will become so crowded with all these smelly

cars and lorries that everyone will give them up and start going by train once again.

Some Specialities in Japan

Phoenix Seagaia Resort is a large resort complex in Miyazaki, Japan. The name

Seagaia is a combination of the words "sea" and "gaia", which means earth in Greek.

Seagaia Resort offers amusement facilities, spas, hotels, and more. There are lots of

golf courses and tennis courts. You can also visit Ocean Dome, which is the world's largest

indoor water park. It has a roof that can be moved, so it opens when it is sunny but closes in

bad weather.

If you want to stay in Seagaia, Sheraton Grande Ocean Resort is a good choice. It's

located in the middle of Seagaia, and the view from the guest rooms is wonderful.

It takes one and a half hours to fly to Miyazaki from Tokyo and to get to the resort

take the direct buses from either Miyazaki Airport or take local buses from Miyazaki Station.

If you are in Japan, you must visit the traditional Cherry Blossom festival, too.

In a typical Cherry Blossom Festival traditional Japanese music and dance

performances take place. Cherry blossoms can be viewed from January to June in different

regions in Japan, so there is a good chance that you can visit one of them when you are in

Japan.

You must not miss to visit Hell Valley in the mountains. You can see the famous snow

monkeys here, who like being around people and live as if they were humans. There is an

outside hot spring that was made just for the monkeys. In winter, you might see snow

monkeys soaking themselves in the hot water while the snow falls on their heads. Hopefully

you will be able to see them bathe or swim in the hot springs.

The paper-eater

Have you ever heard about the man who eats paper? This is a true story which took

place in Australia. It's the story of a man who suffers from some sort of disease which makes

him addicted to cellulose, which is the material that paper is made of.

He used to eat newspapers, which was all he could get, until his wife decided that it

would be better if she made paper for him (so he wouldn't have to eat the ink that covers

newspapers, you know). She didn't want to be known as the woman whose husband had to eat

inky newspapers because he had no kind person to make some clean paper portions for him.

As his wife loves jokes she makes him paper that has all sorts of exotic flavours. So,

now he only eats the paper that his wife makes and only eats ordinary newspapers when he is

travelling, for instance, when he is in New York.

He likes visiting New York, because it is where the newspapers are the thickest. He is

the happiest person of the world when he is in New York on a Sunday, because that is the day

when the newspapers are really thick and have a huge number of pages. Thick newspapers,

for him, are like a banquet at an excellent restaurant.
