Warmup - on a left-hand pageWrite the formula for the name and write the name for the formula.
First determine which are ionic and which are covalent.
1. TeO32. Calcium oxide3. Carbon disulfide4. Ba3N2
We will continue to learn about nomenclature.I will review for and take a quiz and take notes about nomenclature.
Success Criteria
- Be able to determine which naming rules apply to a compound.- Use the naming rules to convert between formula and name for a compound.
AgendaReview for Quiz (including Kahoot for bonus points on quiz)
Take the Quiz (on your phone through Socrative or on paper)
Finish notes for nomenclature
Practice using nomenclature rules
HousekeepingI will pass back the VSEPR quiz on Wednesday with the Nomenclature quiz.
Any corrections need to be done before the test next Friday. Remember that you can only do corrections if your score is below 70. Corrections will not raise your quiz score, but if you do corrections and then get a higher grade on the quiz, your quiz grade will be raised to match your test grade (maximum of 70).
All work from this unit must be turned in within one week after the test over this unit or I will not take them.
Answers to warmup
1. TeO3 2. Calcium oxide
3. Carbon disulfide 4. Ba3N2
Information about the quizThere are 12 questions.
The 6 questions that go from formula to name are multiple choice.
The 6 questions that go from name to formula are short answer. You can’t enter subscripts in your phone, so if you are entering the formula for Tellurium Trioxide, then you would enter TeO3, since you can’t enter subscripts to show TeO3.
Ionic or Covalent?Be sure to determine first whether the compound is ionic or covalent.
Remember that ionic does NOT use prefixes.
You will have a list of prefixes for the quiz.
Kahoot reviewReview with Kahoot.
This review is worth 5 bonus points on the quiz for the top five teams.
Your team name must have the names of everybody on your team. I cannot see the individual names below the team name. If you do not have a phone, then join up with someone who does. No more than two people per team.
You ONLY get the bonus points if you follow the rules and use your names. Anything else will mean that you do not receive your bonus points.
Open KahootRemember to use your actual names. I will not give bonus points to made-up team names. You have to use your actual names.
Before starting the quiz
You should have charges marked on your periodic table.
Make sure that metals and nonmetals are marked.
If the compound contains a metal, then it is ionic.
Time for the quiz!Clear off the table.
You need your periodic table with charges marked.
I will put up the prefixes on the next slide.
You should be able to complete the quiz in 15-20 minutes.
Make a pocket on the next available page in your notebook. This pocket will be just like the one for your periodic table. We will use this pocket for the foldable.
Make sure that you have your foldable ready to finish notes.
This is what page 6 will look like when when we are done.
We will start with the top half of page 6.
Potassium chromate magnesium nitrate
1. Write symbol for cation with charge and symbol for anion with charge.
2. Make the magnitude of the charge on each ion into the subscript of the other ion. If the polyatomic ion needs a subscript, then ion must be written in parentheses.
3. Reduce to simplest terms.
Write the name of the cation and the anion.
Remember that the polyatomic ions are on the back of your periodic table.
This is what page 7 will look like when it is finished.
We will start with the top half of page 7.
Transition Metal Ionic Compound Name → Formula chromium (II) oxide iron (III) chloride
1. Write symbol for metal with charge indicated by Roman numeral and symbol for nonmetal with charge.
2. Make the magnitude of the charge on each ion into subscript on other ion.
3. Reduce to simplest terms.
Name of metal Roman numeral for charge base name of nonmetal -ide
Formula → Name Fe2S3 PbCl4 SnO2
1. Compute the total charge of the anion.
2. Divide the total charge of the anion by the number of the cation.
3. Write the name of the cation, then the charge in Roman numerals in parentheses, then the base name of the anion with -ide.
Charge on S is 2- charge on Cl is 1- charge on O is 2-3 x 2 = 6 4 x 1 = 4 2 x 2 = 4
2 Fe 1 Pb 1 Sn6/2 = 3 4/1 = 4 4/1 = 4

I’ve edited a quizlet to have only terms that you should be able to decode using the rules that we have learned.
I recommend practicing with the flashcards or with the matching game.
