Having previously had the opportunity to meet with a number of local residents, I wanted to write and state my personal opposition to the Mayfield Market Town proposals and to pledge my full support – if fortunate enough to be elected as your Member of Parliament - for local residents in any of the 17 parishes potentially impacted. As a parent myself, I believe that we need more affordable housing and I worry that young people struggle to get their feet onto the housing ladder. I am pleased for example that since 2010 we have helped 566,000 households into home ownership through help to buy schemes. However, it is imperative that new homes we build are located sustainably with access to GP’s, schools, shops and leisure facilities and with transport infrastructure that has the capacity to take the extra strain. As our society ages this becomes even more important with older, single-person households amongst the fastest growing, yet the needs of this group are ill served by large greenfield developments as opposed to sensitive development of smaller units within our existing market towns. In respect of the Mayfield proposal, I believe any planning authority should place great weight on factors such as the ecology of the site, the flood risk (both direct and indirect impact downstream), traffic concerns and the impact on the visual landscape. It is also troubling that residents have been living with the unresolved jeopardy of this development since 2013 with the developers being able to make serial applications despite previous refusals. The South Downs, the surrounding villages and small market towns of West Sussex are very special places and communities and, were I to be elected, I will do everything in my power to protect them. Dear Resident,I was privileged to be selected as the Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Arundel and South Downs at a well-attended meeting on Monday evening.

Kind regards,

Andrew Griffith
