DESCRIPTION

With the expected Eskom increases over the next five years, retail petroleum service stations are facing reduced profitability and some even closure as profits are continually eroded by rising operating costs. Electricity is one of the costs that can be managed and self generated. This conference aims to examine best practices in energy efficiency and unpack the options and complexities of generating electricity from renewable energy specifically for retail fuel sites.

Energy is taken from the PV panels by DC to the GRID-TIE inverter

If the grid is on, the GRID-TIE inverter senses this, synchronizes to it

and feeds the energy into the AC grid.

Energy is used in the house first, excess flows to the grid. If more electricity is used than produced by the PV, electricity is

drawn from the grid. This is also known as NETT-METERING. It translates to an electricity saving and effectively

uses the grid as its “battery”

If the grid fails or is outside of the set specifications, frequency and

voltage, the GRID-TIE inverter switches off within 0.2 seconds. No grid, no power

Energy is taken from the PV panels by DC to the GRID-TIE inverter

If the grid is on, the GRID-TIE inverter senses this, synchronizes to it and feeds the

energy into the AC grid. This grid can be supplied either by the public grid

or by the GENSET, with the energy flow being controlled by the ISLAND inverter.

Energy is used in the house first, excess is taken by the ISLAND inverter., to charge the

battery, from where it also takes energy if no or too little energy comes from the

PV. Additional energy can be fed into or pulled from the grid. This is freely programmable.

during peak loading (HVAC), thereby reducing peak demand.

Brazil as a better guideline for SA?

1. Below 1MW in one location2. Below 1MW more than one location, but one Tax number 3. Above 1MW separate rules as IPP

- Net metering- Net use more than produced, pay R/kWh- Net use less than produced, kWh credits- kWh credits valid for 3 years (seasonal variations)

- System sizes self regulating- Incentive for peak shaping / peak shaving self regulating- Energy saving self regulating- New net metering capable meter supplied by PV project, installed by utility, takes ownership of meter- modernizing of metering infrastructure – no cost to government- extra capacity online – no cost to government- extra income – no cost to government-

- Micro cracks?

- Quality of the installation

- electrical – DC: wiring loops, lightning induces

high voltages. Short circuit proof?
