Program Learning Outcome Reflection Research and Assessment Competence The Research and Assessment Competence learning outcome includes the ability to understand different research and assessment methodologies, the ability to design and implement assessments and program evaluations, and the ability to use technological tools to conduct research. The Evaluation Plan was a semester-long project that I worked on with a classmate for my Evaluation and Assessment in Higher Education course. Throughout the semester, I learned that in order to develop an effective assessment project, one must be committed to investing a significant amount of time, effort, and attention. Through the development of this project, I learned the difference between quantitative and qualitative techniques. My classmate and I used both approaches in designing a formative assessment project for Loyola’s UNIV 101 Course. Our assessment plan, which is detailed in this project, included both a survey element, and a semi-structured interview element. Additionally, I learned how to use the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) in analyzing assessment data and making meaning of results.

Program Learning Outcome ReflectionResearch and Assessment CompetenceThe Research and Assessment Competence learning outcome includes the ability to understand different research and assessment methodologies, the ability to design and implement assessments and program evaluations, and the ability to use technological tools to conduct research. My classmate and I used both approaches in designing a formative assessment project for Loyolas UNIV 101 Course. Our assessment plan, which is detailed in this project, included both a survey element, and a semi-structured interview element. Additionally, I learned how to use the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) in analyzing assessment data and making meaning of results. Becoming proficient with this technology allowed me to understand the ways in which assessment projects can be done effectively. With the development of this project, I also learned the importance of ethical practices in research and assessment projects. My classmate and I met with several stakeholders and used their input as well as our own knowledge to ensure that we were utilizing assessment strategies and tools in an ethical way. While I was not able to see the evaluation project carried out, I know that the process of creating the project helped me better understand what it realistically looks like to engage in the meaningful and necessary work of evaluation and assessment. I now have a deep appreciation for the time and energy required to create a beneficial project, and I look forward to future opportunities to continue to improve my skills in this area.
