And the Mercy Club award winner is Humanitarian (definition): a person who seeks to promote human welfare; a philanthropist. Our Mercy Club Award dinner is a special night each year where we recognize an individual who truly depicts this definition. It is also an evening where we celebrate all of our Mercy Club members, past and present, who give back and support our mission.

This year, our 38th Mercy Club Award Winner is Jeff Jarvis, President of University of Northwestern Ohio (UNOH). Jeff is truly an inspiration and role model to our community and we want to share with you his story.

In 1969, Jeff’s father Lorn, acquired The Northwestern School of Commerce that was founded in 1920. At the time, the school had only 43 students and two employees. Over the next four decades, Lorn and Jeff built an educational enterprise that would have a significant impact on our region.

Jeff began employment with UNOH in 1975 as an admissions tour guide and a maintenance employee. In the years to follow, he would work in nearly every facet of student affairs including: Housing Director, Student Activities, Financial Aid and Veterans Affairs.

After serving time in these roles, he had the opportunity in 1993 to take on leadership opportunities. In 1999, he was appointed to President of UNOH. Every year Dave Buckland returns home to Leipsic, Ohio Since he was appointed President, UNOH has undergone many changes. Students now have the opportunity to earn diplomas, associate, baccalaureate and master’s degrees — and the University now offers more than 60 programs!

In 1992, UNOH established the nation’s first high performance/motorsports program. However, in 2006, motorsports education reached a new level. Under Jeff’s wing, they established the largest facility in the country. The seven acre, 70,000 square foot high performance motorsports complex was dedicated to educating those about the science of high performance vehicles.

To go along with the success of expanding educational opportunities and creating a respective motorsports program, the school now offers intercollegiate athletic teams and has seen record breaking enrollments for 29 consecutive years. Through the growth and expansion of the University, Lima has seen over $100 million in development. However, the economic impact that Jeff has provided to this community doesn’t stop there.

This year marks the 19th anniversary since UNOH purchased Limaland Motorsports Park. This park has more than 140,000 fans and competitors from 28 states, Canada and Australia. These folks travel to Lima each year to enjoy competitive racing and atmosphere that this facility brings.

When not in the University spotlight, Jeff brings so much to the community. He and UNOH have partnered with St. Rita’s and have collaborated together on a number of projects. Most recently, we opened an outpatient clinic located on the UNOH campus on Eastown Road.

Jeff has also served on many community boards including The YMCA, United Way, American Red Cross — Lima Chapter, Boy Scouts of America, Allen County Visionaries and Special Olympics. To add to this, he has also earned many awards including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Pioneer Award in 2006 and the Allen County Vision of the Year in 2007.

Through his civic involvement and continued philanthropic efforts, we cannot thank Jeff enough for providing our community with continued growth and success. It was an honor to be able to celebrate his Mercy Club Award this year with our team, as well as, UNOH staff, his family and friends.

A message from our CEO Bob Baxter

St. Rita’s Health Partners is honored to be a part of the Lima and surrounding communities. In this issue of RitaScope, we want to show you the impact we have in our communities, and how this extends beyond our hospital walls.

As Catherine McAuley once said:

“A community in which this universal charity reigns, is capable of surmounting all difficulties.”

To grow as a community, it begins with everyone. We must come together and support each other. We hope that our stories from the last few months will bring inspiration to you. Volunteerism, charity and service is something that we value and aligns with our Mission:

“We extend the healing ministry of Jesus by improving the health of our communities with emphasis on people who are poor and under-served.”

From all of us here at St. Rita’s, we want to thank you for your support and helping us on this journey to improve the lives of those close to us.

Sincerely,

Bob Baxter CEO, Mercy Health — Lima Region Senior Vice President, Mercy Health

We’re on a chase — chasing away heart disease that is…Get ready, get set, let’s chase! Chase away heart disease that is.

In September, we teamed up with the American Heart Association for the fourth year in a row, and held our annual HeartChase event in Downtown Lima.

The day began with teams of two to five people gathering in the downtown square. Stations were setup around downtown with different challenges. Challenges included building walls, doing jumping jacks and performing CPR on dummies.

Teams were on a timed mission and had to race to each station to earn points – some teams even had advantage points that were earned because they had fundraised a certain amount of funds leading up to chase day. When the race was over, there were three winners: Team Heart Attack, Team Pacemakers and Team Smith Boughan Red.

There were three overall winners, but we want to thank the more than 250 people who attended this event to help chase away heart disease. With everyone’s participation, we were able to raise nearly $80,000 toward this cause, and hope to increase this amount next year.

United Way Day of Caring: bringing communities together This year, our very own Bob Baxter was representing United Way of Greater Lima — a nonprofit that’s mission is to improve lives by uniting the caring power of our community. He is serving as co-chairperson, and kicked-off the campaign in August by getting St. Rita’s employees involved. We had a week worth of fun activities scheduled within our hospital walls. This included an employee pie-in-the-face event, cutest pet competition and getting employees to pledge. However, the fun didn’t stop there.

In September, St. Rita’s leaders attended the United Way of Greater Lima’s Day of Caring event. The day began with a delicious breakfast and the organization provided us with information about the impact we have on the community. We even had the opportunity to meet a United Way family — and we just have to say we were very touched by their story! After wrapping up breakfast, we set out for the Day of Caring event.

The Day of Caring event was a day dedicated to giving back to the Lima community. Leaders from different companies and organizations were involved on this day — and St. Rita’s

leaders were happy to be a part of this. We had the opportunity to go to local organizations around our community and provide a little TLC. This included painting walls, picking up trash and planting flowers. We had a wonderful day of giving back and the weather couldn’t have been better.

Today, we have raised nearly $143,000 for United Way of Greater Lima, which is a 65 percent increase from last year. This monetary value is important in helping improve the lives of our community, but we also believe it’s important to volunteer and get involved in our community, too!

UroNav technology provides earlier detection of prostate cancerOur Lima Urology team recently received a new piece of technology called the UroNav biopsy machine. This technology gives physicians the opportunity to detect prostate cancer earlier than previous methods. We are the first hospital in our 10-county area to be utilizing this latest machinery.

“This new technology will allow us to find and diagnose potentially hidden tumors much better,” said Dr. Craig Nicholson, Urologist at Lima Urology. “As a regional leader in prostate cancer care, we felt that utilization of this new technology, developed by the NIH, would help us continue to provide patient care that is second to none.”

When using UroNav, doctors take a high-field MRI image of the patient’s prostate gland. This aids in detecting suspicious and sometimes hidden lesions. The image is then fused with an ultrasound image to assist in identifying suspicious areas of the prostate for needle biopsy. The accuracy of this system helps eliminate taking multiple random biopsies, and may also allow us to discover aggressive tumors that may have been missed.

Earlier this month, Dr. Nicholson used this technology for the first time on two patients. We look forward to treating other patients with this machinery and providing an opportunity for earlier detection.

A Woman’s Artwork Inspired by Early Onset Alzheimer’sWhen Anita Lehman’s brother-in-law Mike was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s, it was a surprise to everyone. Mike was a physician for many years, and when he started having trouble remembering things and showing other signs, he was able to diagnose himself before getting an official diagnosis. After telling his family and friends about what was happening, they all found different ways to cope. Anita’s way was through her artwork.

Her two-part series, Valley of the Shadows has been showcased in our gallery for the last few months and is in honor of Mike. The first 10 paintings contain text and give insight into her thoughts about the journey her family and Mike are facing. Some of the paintings even include music notes and lyrics, as Mike has always enjoyed music and playing guitar. When these paintings were completed, she noticed that Mike started to draw his own art — this is what inspired part two of her series.

“He’d been doing some drawings. I took tracing paper to copy what he drew and used the lines in his drawings as a starting point in my paintings.” Anita said in a heartfelt tone.

She wasn’t sure what Mike was drawing at the time, but knew that it made sense to him. These pieces are honoring him, and she hopes that anyone who may be dealing with this can get inspired by these paintings.

“It’s good to talk about Alzheimer’s. Every experience is different, but we need to bring awareness to the situation,” she said.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, many people with early onset are in their 40s and 50s. They have families, careers or are even caregivers themselves when Alzheimer’s disease strikes. In the United States, it is estimated that approximately 200,000 people have early onset.

St. Rita’s and Mercy Health take mission trip to HaitiA team of 12 Mercy Health and St. Rita’s employees recently traveled to Cite Soleil, Port au Prince, Haiti. Led by Tim Mosher, Nurse Practitioner, they operated a medical clinic under the auspices of Haiti Outreach Ministries, who have ongoing medical services at that location. During the week, a total of 551 walk-in patients were treated, over 1,000 prescriptions were written and filled, and 65 minor surgical procedures were completed. Thank you to those who supported this mission, and for always going above and beyond!

How a pink cape is bringing awareness to breast cancer Have you been checked? That’s the question we asked this October in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. To spread this message, we came up with a fun and unique way to do so. With a little bit of creativity, team collaboration and pink capes — the Pink Superhero Campaign was developed!

The Pink Superhero Campaign brought awareness to the community about the importance of scheduling an annual mammography appointment. Just like how superheroes save lives – mammography can save lives too. With that said, pink capes were distributed to anyone who helped in the fight against breast cancer.

These capes were distributed to local hair salons to bring awareness to the community, as well as physicians,

survivors and patients. Those who wore a pink cape told their stories on our Facebook page. Stories included those about survival, loss or helping to treat breast cancer.

As these individuals shared their pink superhero stories throughout the month, we also encouraged everyone to visit our Facebook page and share their stories using #pinksuperhero.

GoNoodle and St. Rita’s bring active lifestyles to area schools How do you get a classroom full of young kids active? A little music, dance parties and exercise of course! To get kids more active in the classroom, we’ve teamed up with GoNoodle to get kids moving and incorporate a healthier lifestyle in our local school districts.

Nearly 18,000 elementary school students in Allen, Auglaize and Putnam counties are participating in GoNoodle. Students have logged more than 365,000 minutes of activity including 40,000 of that at Bath Elementary School, where we recently visited Ms. Foust’s second grade classroom to celebrate their accomplishment.

Kids and our nursing staff had a great time dancing and singing along to GoNoodles’ catchy songs, fun dances and calming techniques. We realize that getting kids moving not only promotes a healthy lifestyle, but can also help brain activity and how they think.

We are pleased to bring GoNoodle into our community, and to be able to help area schools incorporate fitness and wellness into their daily routines. St. Rita’s is also proud to partner with Activate Allen County and Veggie U to promote healthier living and eating.

How one fund can mean so muchOur Women’s Wellness team hosted Holiday Gift and Décor Inspirations at Sycamore Lake Wine Co. in Columbus Grove this November to raise funds for the Sherry Halker Pink Ribbon Warrior Fund. The fund is in honor of Sherry Halker, who was an oncology nurse and breast care manager at our medical center, and assists women who are uninsured or under-served and need financial assistance with mammograms and breast ultrasounds.

Those attending the event enjoyed a night of music, refreshments, wine, and holiday gift and décor ideas. However, one attendee was unable to attend this night but sent us a letter to tell us why giving back to this fund means so much to them, and to others who may be going through a similar situation:

In 2014, I lost my job due to reductions and found myself without health insurance. About 3 weeks later, I found a small lump in my breast that I knew hadn’t always been there. After stewing for a few days, I called my doctor’s office and they got me right in and ordered a mammogram. Not having insurance, I held onto that order for over a week, hoping that it would just go away. Well, it didn’t and my anxiety grew because my mom had breast cancer. I called the Health Department and unfortunately I was too young for their grant. So I called the Women’s Wellness Center and they assured me that they could help me through the Sherry Halker Fund.

I got in that same day and they paid for my mammogram and ultrasound. I came back the next day and had a biopsy, which was paid for through the fund as well. The next day, the radiologist and nurse sat me down to tell me I had breast cancer, but no sign that it was in my nodes. They then helped set me up with a surgeon and a financial counselor.

In the end, I had an early stage breast cancer removed and have had to have minimal treatment. I am so grateful that this fund exists for women like me who may otherwise forego testing because they can’t afford it. I am now employed with good benefits and want to give back to a cause that gave so much to me. Enclosed is a check for $200. I know it’s not much, but maybe it will help someone else.

Her story is one that inspires us all, and is a reminder why this fund means so much to those who need it most. This event raised more than $9,500 to help this fund. Since its founding in August 2013, the Sherry Halker Pink Ribbon Warrior Fund has assisted 400 women and two men, and has raised nearly $170,000.

Pictured are Sherry’s husband, Rick Halker, and daughters Brittany, Brianne and Amber.

Hybrid Operating Room Brings New Procedures In October, we introduced our new hybrid operating room to our community with an official ribbon cutting. This new space provides our cardiology team with the technology and equipment to perform minimally invasive, catheter-based procedures and open surgeries — all in one room.

“Our Hybrid OR not only elevates the quality care we have always provided patients, but it also allows us to work progressively towards offering new procedures in the Lima community that once required patients to travel.” said Bob Baxter, CEO of St. Rita’s Health Partners. “And, with our St. Rita’s Promise to make healthcare easier and improve lives in our community — investing in such a space was an easy decision.”

With this new space, we look forward to offering even more new and advanced procedures to care for our patients.
