ANCIENT GREECE

Art & Architecture-Ancient Greek art emphasized the importance and accomplishments of human beings. Much artwork was government sponsored and intended for public display.

History- The history of Greece can be traced back to Stone Age hunters. Later came early farmers and the civilizations of the Minoan and Mycenaean kings. This was followed by a period of wars and invasions, known as the Dark Ages. In about 1100 BC, a people called the Dorians invaded from the north and spread down the west coast. In the period from 500-336 BC Greece was divided into small city states, each of which consisted of a city and its surrounding countryside.

Olympics- The Greeks invented athletic contests and held them in honor of their gods. The Isthmos game were staged every two years at the Isthmos of Corinth. The Pythian games took place every four years near Delphi. The most famous games held at Olympia, South- West of Greece, which took place every four years. The ancient Olympics seem to have begun in the early 700 BC, in honour of Zeus. No women were allowed to watch the games and only Greek nationals could participate.

Wars- There were many wars that happened in Greece. The reason for most of them was to conquer colonies.

Geography-Greece is a small country in Europe. Its main part is a peninsula and it is near the Mediterranean Sea.

Mythology- The 3 major gods are Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades. The Greek gods serve as their basis on how to live their life.

People- 93% Greeks, 7% Others. Many philosophers come from Greece, like Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, and Alexander the Great.

Culture & Society-Greek Society was mainly broken up between Free people and Slaves, who were owned by the free people. Slaves were used as servants and laborers, without any legal rights.
