Spring 2016 Edition New beginnings are in tow!
Happy Spring, DeeGees! I hope that you all enjoyed our mild winter here
in Edmonton, but I know I’m looking forward to warmer temperatures
and being able to do more outdoor activities!
We had a fantastic 2015 year with many events and the introduction of our
Special Interest Groups! If you’re interested in fitness, reading, crafting,
reality TV, or if you spend a lot of time on the U of A campus, consider
joining one or all of the groups! There’s no obligation to actively
participate, but joining the group(s) will give you the opportunity to do so
if you wish. You can find connect with the SIGs via their respective
Facebook groups, or shoot me an email and I can get you in contact with
the SIG coordinator.
Thank you to everyone that attended our events this past year! I look
forward to seeing both familiar and new faces at our events in the future!

President’s Message Sarah Flowers (BB 2008)
As I write this issue's update, the
blowing snow and winter wind make
me think of the weather conditions that
Anna, Eva, and Mary might have
experienced back in 1873. Like our
founders, I am still full of hope. In my
case, I am hopeful that warmer days
are around the corner!
While I am still on the topic of our
founders, I would like to thank
everyone who attended Founders Day
this year. It was so wonderful to see so
many Delta Gammas gathered
together. I look forward to seeing you
all again in 2017 when we celebrate our
85th Founders Day here in Edmonton!
Despite the current wintery weather,
the Edmonton alumnae chapter is
springing forward and looking
forward to several upcoming events.
One of our most popular spring events,
the New Alumnae Mixer, will be held
in the coming months to welcome the
newest alumnae to our chapter. Keep
checking Facebook for more details
about this fun sisterhood event!
On May 4, we'll be hosting our
executive board elections. If you are
interested in getting involved with the
Edmonton alumnae chapter, consider
filling out a resume! For more
information, feel free to contact any
member of the current executive board.
Even if you don't plan to run for a
position, come out on May 4 and cast
your vote for vice president: finance,
vice president: foundation, and vice
president: programming! Check out
our Facebook event or stay tuned to
your e-mails for more information.
While the executive board won't be
hosting regular meetings during the
summer, we are excited to be bringing
back our Summer Series events for a
second year. Our Special Interest
Groups will also be also be running
throughout the summer. If you're
interested in joining (or starting) a SIG,
summer is a wonderful time to get
involved and spend some time with
your sisters.
As always, if you have any questions,
concerns or comments, please feel free
to contact me either via e-mail
at [email protected], by messaging
me on Facebook, or by phone at 780-
887-7227. Have a fantastic summer and
I hope to see you at our upcoming
events!
ITB,
Sarah Flowers
Collegiate Corner
As our 2015-2016 school year is coming to a close, Beta Beta chapter has had time to look back at a wonderful year! We had a successful bid
day, welcoming 16 new members including 3 legacies. We held COB in January welcoming 3 girls.
Our Anchor Splash is always a popular event in the Greek community, we raised $7900 for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind
(CNIB) and the Foundation. In our winter semester we held Desserts with DG. With dessert donations from local businesses and desserts
made by collegians and alumnae we provided unlimited desserts to our guests with a minimum $5 donation at entry. This one night event
raised over $1200 for the CNIB and the Foundation. We volunteered with the University of Alberta’s iCare initiative, they perform
monthly visual acuity screenings at inner city schools for children in grades 1-3 and refer them to free services so their vision can be
managed by professionals.
Beta Beta chapter won two major awards this year at Greek Formal, capturing the highest all Greek GPA as well as the Greek Standards
and Excellence award, which is given to the chapter that excels in academics, public relations, Greek relations, service and overall
community involvement.
We volunteer weekly with the CNIB! We have a very close relationship with them here in Edmonton. In March more than half our chapter
spent the evening volunteering to sell 50/50 tickets at an Edmonton Oilers hockey game. In combination with the CNIB and Rexall Place we
managed to raise $62,000 for the CNIB! The proceeds from this night go towards funding a summer camp for visually impaired children.
Beta Beta is excited for the upcoming fall recruitment and all the summer adventures sisters will have in the next few months!

Fundraising: This year, at Founders
Day, the Edmonton Delta Gamma
Alumnae Chapter raised $352.06 for
the Delta Gamma Foundation. Thank
you to all who contributed their pocket
change and bid on silent auction
items. Money raised for the Delta
Gamma Foundation supports many
great causes, including Service for
Sight, Need-Based and Merit-Based
Scholarships for collegiate members,
graduate fellowships for alumnae
members, and many more! Your
contributions certainly make a
difference! Interested in learning more
about giving to the foundation?
Visit deltagamma.org/foundation, or
talk to me ([email protected]), for
more information!
Did You Know... There are two levels
of lifetime giving that are recognized
by the Foundation with special pins?
The Golden Anchor Link (lifetime
giving of $1000-1872) is marked with a
stylized golden anchor pin. The 1873
Club Link (lifetime giving of $1873-
2499) is distinguished with a special
letter H pin.
Labels for Education: Campbells
Labels for Education collected by that

the W. Ross Macdonald School for
Students who are Visually Impaired,
Blind, and Deafblind. W. Ross
Macdonald School offers programming
for elementary and secondary students
and is located in Brantford, Ontario,
and is one of the only schools of it's
kind in Canada. We are proud to be
able to support a Canadian school with
our soup labels! Did you know that
Labels for Education can help supply
schools with much-needed supplies
like books, gym equipment, and even
musical instruments?
Service: We currently have 18 service
hours logged this year by members of
the Edmonton Alumnae Chapter - do
you volunteer for an organization that
supports Service for Sight, or volunteer
at a seniors home? If so, please contact
me ([email protected]) to have
your volunteer hours included in our
total!
Calgary Alumnae Association Christina Chan (BB 2005), vp: communications
The Calgary Alumnae had an amazing year of events with a strong focus on our Foundation. During “Do
Good” week, we got the opportunity to volunteer with a local charitable organization “Made by
Momma”. The group prepared 40 meals for families facing situations of adversity and crisis. Calgary
alumnae also had a team run in last year’s CIBC Run for the Cure and raised $2910.00 in support of breast
cancer. Other events involved catching up with
one another and eating delicious meals at YYC
Big Taste, Calgary’s annual spring social and
the holiday brunch. We are excited for our
upcoming comedy show in April, annual spring
brunch in May, as well as a family and friends
hiking day in June. Any alumnae moving or
visiting Calgary are always welcome to our
events and you can stay up to date on our event
details by joining our Facebook group!

Bethany. Bethany is four years old and
will be formally adopted in the coming
months.
Shaun McConnell proposed to Mariah Tyson (Beta

Disneyland for a post-graduation celebration! “He
convinced me that we should go take pictures in front
of the Cinderella castle. We had a photographer
taking a few cheesy pictures of us then he asked if
there were any other poses we wanted. That's when
Shaun chimed in that he had one more! Shaun got
down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I was
so surprised that I was immediately in tears! It was a
truly magical moment in the Happiest Place on
Earth. “ The wedding will take place in Edmonton in
May 2017.
Noel Boucher-Le (Beta Beta 2006) recently completed
her law degree in January at the University of
Manchester in Manchester, UK and she will be
graduating in July 2016. Jolly good!

At Founder’s Day, the Edmonton Alumnae Chapter was proud to
award Krista Nelson-Marciano with the Cable Award. Krista
exemplifies our Founders’ commitment through her tireless service to
her sisters, her strong leadership, and her commitment to improving
Delta Gamma for all of us. Krista has previously served Delta Gamma as
an Edmonton Alumnae President, House Corporation Secretary, House
Corporation President, Provincial Collegiate Chairman, Regional
Housing Director and currently sits on the Beta Beta HC board.
We had no difficulty finding women who wanted to recognize Krista,
and would like to thank the women that submitted nomination letters
on her behalf.
“As a new graduate embarking on a career; then newly married; later
still a new mom.. she was continually busy. But with one phone call she
was there with her ‘can do’ attitude. And always with a cheerfulness, a
passion, a sense of fun that made being a member of HC a special
event.”
“She is an alumna who the collegiate members look up to in awe. Her
love and passion were evident from the moment I met her. She is a truly
involved and dedicated Delta Gamma and a shining example to
collegiate and alumnae members alike.”
Congratulations Krista! We are so lucky to have a sister like you!
