I knew Ted's families slightly. Yvonne, his first wife, took off to live in an Ashram out west. Then I think she ended up in Florida later. My recollection was that Yvonne was older than Leslie. You have them both listed in 1950 but maybe that was an 11 month difference or something. The son, Win, was a good jazz musician when he grew up, but we lost touch with them around 1970.

Margo's family was in Massachusetts. She visited us a few times with the young kids. Ted was working in Columbus Georgia at the time and she'd bring the kids to Mass to visit their Craig relatives. She'd bring them by to see Aunt Evelyn too. She called her 2nd boy "Jimbo". At some point she told us that she and the kids would be staying in Mass with her family because she and Ted were separating. I don't remember dates but it would have been late 60's or 1970. Ted called us in 1972 to see if someone would drive to Georgia and bring him back to Mass. My parents both worked and we had to care for Aunt Evelyn so my mother said no (I volunteered to drive having just graduated from High School, but that idea was killed quickly). Uncle Ed. was a commercial artist. From family letters it could be seen that he had a tremendous sense of humor. Aunt Alice suffered from depression or a related disorder. I don't know when she died but I'd guess it was in the early 1950's. Uncle Ed had a heart attack in about 1954 - after she was gone. His son, E. A. III, was always called Ted. He was a very good cartoonist. Did alot of work in WWII for the armed forces newspapers. Made charicatures of soldiers that were quite popular at home with families.

Wow I just scanned the "descendents" files. Amazing and very thorough. I'll comment on some things we've heard through the family. My great grandfather wrote a summary of his life in 1921. My sister has it. He was big on details about the piano companies he worked in but didn't do much about dates. According to Sweetie (which is what the family always called him) his mother and father had a baby very early in their marriage named "Prince William". He died when he was only a few days old or maybe at birth. Montraville was the second child and lived to be about 2 (your dates would fit in here), then "Ed" and finally Charlie. He didn't mention the others you have listed. Ed O. was a travelling judge. Sweetie would take trips with him in his horse and buggy. He had a mistress and they would stay with her. Sweetie's recollection (since he was a little kid) was of a big bed he got to sleep in all by himself. "Mahala Fish" as she was called in the family was definitely different. She read alot of romantic books (hence the names Prince William and Montraville) and she worked performing seances and talking to the dead. I was interested to see your note that Charlie was "adopted" by his aunt and her husband. I'm not surprised. Sweetie seemed to spend alot of time at relatives. He spent a year in Iowa with cousins (DeWitt-Clinton County I think) and alot of time at the homes of "Grandma Owens" and "Grandma Fish". maybe Mahala didn't get the mothering gene. She remarried - a man named Gay or Guay. My sister would have his first name. (My sister is Mahala too). He was a piano tuner and worked on design of pianos and organs. Had jobs in Ohio and Mass., as well as New York. They stayed married until he died - in between births of Ed Locke Jr. and Helen Locke. Mahala Fish died in 1906 and was cremated per her instructions. (Russ Locke and his long-term fiance, Clara Rollins, got the job of rowing her ashes out into the middle of a lake to dump them. The wind kicked up and Uncle Russ got a blast of ashes in his face and promptly vomited. So much for family duty.) I hope you don't mind the anecdotes. Mary Mahala Nahana FISH and Judge Edwin Orletus LOCKE were married on 13 May 1838 in Mansfield, Cattaraugus, New York, United States.

9. Mary Mahala Nahana FISH was born on 30 Nov 1820 in Mansfield, Cattaraugus, New York. She died in 1906 at the age of 86. She was the first settler child born in Mansfield.

my recollections aren't great for details but I got the impression that Mahala Fish did her own thing and if her husband and son were in the same town, fine, otherwise she was off on her own Sweetie liked Mr. Gay alot (his name might have been Frank). They had piano playing in common. He was really supporting himself from a young age. First he tried to study medicine but got grossed out when someone put a cadaver hand in his uniform (lab coat?) pocket. Then he tried to study law. Then he worked on a steamboat as a "key boy" and finally got a job as a wheelsman on the Cataract, a ship on Lake Erie that caught fire and sank 12 miles offshore in the Fall of 1861. (Sweetie ripped a door off its hinges, threw it overboard and jumped on it. He was cut on glass and woke up later to find his arm being bandaged by a group that rescued him.) He was living in Cleveland then and was 17. Instead of getting another job he lied about his age and joined the 64th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Wrote to Mahala from down south about his decision and she went to Cleveland and sold all his belongings and cancelled his room contract. (She was definitely different.) In the 64th Ohio he hung out with one of his friends from Cleveland named Tibbets. Tibbets came down with what they thought was smallpox so Sweetie was ordered to escort him home to Cleveland - ostensibly to die. They travelled back to Cleveland and it turned out Tibbets had chicken pox. He was discharged. Sweetie went back to the 64th but when he got there they told him to go back to Camp Delaware. By then it was Fall of 1862. When he got to Camp D. they mustered him out of the service. He thought it was because they were afraid he was carrying smallpox. He met Maggie Cook when he boarded at her family home. They had two kids Allie and Ella. Ella died when she was two from pneumonia. They were living in Guelph Canada at the time. They moved back the States but Maggie was sick. She never recovered from Ella's death and died not long after. Allie went to live with Maggie's family in Buffalo and attended a military school there. He spent summers with Sweetie and his second family. He died when he was 13 of some virus that was going around in his school. Mary Kennedy he met when he worked as a piano player in the dancing academy she worked at in Boston. Her parents were James Kennedy and Bridget (sp?) Martin - one of the "black Martins". Apparently there were two Martin families - one with black hair and one with red hair. I don't know if that was in Boston or back in Ireland, but it was always emphasized that Mary's family was the "black Martin" family. They had a son Frankie about a year after they got married. He was about 2 years older than Aunt Evelyn. When he was 3 or 4 they were spending the summer at Block Island. (Aunt Evelyn could remember him vaguely), He got sick and the doctor camed to check him. He gave him a shot of something and left. Then a little later Frankie was extremely ill and Mary ran through the streets in her nightgown calling for the doctor. Frankie died. Sweetie thought the doctor must have been drunk and given him the wrong stuff. You have the other children listed. Russ, Frances Marion (she changed it to Marion Frances when she was a kid after she heard about the "Swamp Fox"), Ed and Helen. Helen was my grandmother. Aunt Evelyn never married. She died the day after her 102nd birthday (9/23/1979). She was blind for the last 5 or 6 years of her life. She lived with us. Aunt Marion died at the Brockton Hospital in Brockton, Mass on 3/15/1966. I think she had cancer of the liver. She lived with us for several years, then had a place with Aunt Evelyn around the time she died. Aunt Evelyn moved back in with us. Uncle Russ was engaged for about 10 years to a lady named Clara Rollins in Enfield, NH. She finally gave up on him and married someone else. Then he married Aunt Tulah. Her maiden name was Talluleh Corilla Campbell. We knew her well. She died in 1969. They never had children. They lived in Milton Mass.

Edwin Orletus LOCKE and Mary Mahala Nahana FISH had the following children:

i. Prince William LOCKE was born about 1839. He died about 1839 at the age of 0.ii. Montraville LOCKE was born on 7 Jul 1840 in Little Valley, Cattaraugus, New York. He died on 7 Apr

1842 at the age of 1 in Little Valley, Cattaraugus, New York.4 iii. Edwin Adelbert "Sweetie" LOCKE CIVWAR, born 3 Nov 1843, Little Valley, Cattaraugus, New

York; died 19 Nov 1929, Enfield, Grafton, New Hampshire.iv. Orletus LOCKE was born in of Little Valley, Cattaraugus, New York. Information from David W.

v. Charles Galan Charlie LOCKE was born on 27 Aug 1850 in Little Valley, Cattaraugus, New York. He died in 1944 at the age of 94 in Buffalo, Erie, New York, United States. He was buried in 1944 in Randolph Cemetery, Randolph, Cattaraugus, New York. Charles, Ella, Hattie and Mildred were enumerated in Randolph in 1900 (U.S. Census). In 1910, Charles G., Ella S., Hattie C. and Mildred M.

were enumerated in Randolph. He was a "civil engineer" and Hattie was a "stenographer, law office (U.S. Census)." In 1920, the family was in Little Valley, Cattaraugus, NY, without Edward (U.S. Census). They were at 69 Court Street at that time.

Charles was adopted by Augustus Galloway at the age of three (apparently, he kept the name Locke).

He attended the University of Michigan, studied engineering, but did not graduate.

He moved to Randolph, Cattaraugus, New York in about 1892. He had a 150 acre farm in Little Valley Center.

He worked as a timber man in Pennsylvania and New York (as a surveyor). He surveyed for railroad lines in Ohio and Missouri. Thereafter he stayed in Randolph, engineering buildings.

He lived on the farm established by his grandfather and operated by his son Harry.

See the Historical Gazetteer and Biographical Memorial of Cattaraugus County, New York (1893), History of the Town of Little Valley, p. 780.

Hi Jerry, Thank you for the email. Charles G. Locke was my father's uncle (my father's mother and Charles' wife were sisters). Even though the relationship was by marriage, our family and Charles' family were very close. Charles G. Locke was a man of many talents (noted surveyor, excellent illustrator, renown fiddler, ect) who lived into his 90's and led a very colorful life. I have various family photos of our family that were passed on to me by my mother - Charles and his wife (Ella) and their children (Harry, Hattie and Mildred) are in some of them. I don't have a lot of historical information on the family but have information that Charles' father was Edwin Oretus Locke and his mother was Mary Nahana Fish Locke. I have a rather lengthy article from the Salamanca newspaper in the 1930's that discussed his life and exploits. Are you related to the family? I'd be interested in any further information you may have on the family. Thanks

Jim Rasey

Hi Jerry, Thank you very much for all the information you sent (both emails) regarding the Locke family. I will pull together what information I have (i.e. article on Charles that I mentioned to you, copy of an illustration of Henry L. Foote's home that is in the History of Cattaraugus County - 1879 and was done by Charles (are actually several done by Charles) and any other data that would supplement your information. In regard to the Lockes, Charles died in 1944 just before I was born (1946). I grew up in Randolph, however, and knew Harry as well as Addison (Charles Addison but he went by Addison) and Helen (I was executor of her estate). I actually have a lot more genealogy information on the Footes - Ella's sister Alta was my grandmother. I have information from a family bible that evidently belonged to Alta's grandparents (Henry L. Foote's parents). Included is birth information on their eleven (11) sons (no daughters). Henry was the youngest son. His father's name was Benager and his mother's name was Mary. I'll send you a copy of the information from the bible. I also found a book on Foote genealogy and was able to link it to Benager (the book spells it differently) and earlier generations. I also have information on where some of the Footes and Lockes are buried. Earlier this year, I was able to locate what I believe is Benager's grave (is next to Mary E. Foote's grave but is spelled "Elice B. Foote"). Benager's middle name was Ellis and quite often in those days people were called by their middle name - if you combine that with a gravestone marker that had trouble spelling, you might come up with "Elice

B.". Anyway, I'll make copies of the aforementioned information and send it to you (might be a few days till I get it together and can make copies). Again, thanks for the information you provided.

Widely Known Man Died At Hospital, Randolph (NY) Register, April 14, 1944. Charles G. Locke passed last Saturday Was in His 92nd Year Oldest active surveyor in this Country Burial Here Death of Charles G. Locke in a Buffalo hospital last Saturday removes a man of many fine attainments and one who enjoyed a personal acquaintance of a very wide circle. Mr. Locke has not been in his usual rugged health, although he reached the age of 92 years, for the last six months and a couple of weeks ago went into a hospital for observation. It was decided that an operation would be desirable and he went into Buffalo last week. After the operation he did not fully regain consciousness and death followed in a few days.

As a civil engineer, which profession he followed, he gained wide notoriety he excelled in music on the violin, as a student of geology and topography he has written the most detail account of the terrain of Cattaraugus County and as a student of soils he was an acknowledged expert. Last year it was announced he was the oldest active surveyor in this country. His ready with stood him in good stead as a debater and often he was heard in public assemblies pitted against the best opposition could produce. Mr. Locke was supervisor of the town of Randolph and he gave to that office the same careful consideration which his son has given this township in later years.

Mr. Locke resided in Little Valley for the last few years with his two daughters, Hattie and Mildred; his wife died in 1929. Others surviving are his son Harry Locke supervisor of Randolph, and two grandchildren, Lieutenant Addison Locke, now serving in the Aleutians, and Miss Helen Locke of Randolph.

The funeral service was conducted at the Little Valley Congregational Church Tuesday afternoon, and was attended by county officers and members of the Board of Supervisors then in session at the County seat. burial was made in Randolph cemetery.

Mr. Locke was born in Little Valley August 27, 1850, his mother having been the first child to be born in the town of Mansfield. His father died when he was three years old and he went to live with an aunt and uncle. At the age of 18 he began teaching school and a few years later went to the University of Michigan to study engineering and surveying. He did not graduate, however, but returned to Little Valley where he continued his studies in a practical way. A local engineer for whom he worked at odd times went to Pennsylvania to survey in the newly opened oil fields and turned his business to Mr. Locke.

In the years 1894-95-96 Mr. Locke was employed by the State on a state land survey in the Adirondacks spending his summers in the mountains and his winters in Albany. In 1897 he penetrated the Virgin forests of Pennsylvania and built a 25 mile lumber railroad for the Pennsylvania Lumber Co. running the branch line up into the mountain and employing the switch back principle, or utilizing gravity a greater portion of the way for power.

By 1905 Engineer Locke's reputation had grown and he received a call from the city of Cleveland to make plans for the elimination (illegible) limits. Later he surveyed and located a 14 mile railroad from Mansfield to Ashland. He was in Cleveland two years.

Three years later came his most difficult feat of engineering. He was commissioned to go to Hannibal, Mo., to survey a line from Hannibal to Alaska, Mo., only 5 miles distance but presenting grave difficulties for the engineer. Footholds had to be cut in the fact of a precipice 80 feet high in order to place his instruments. Many times he had to hang on a bush and lie down to look through his level. He saw the job through however, but after learning that rattlesnakes abound in the region he refused to go back for a second assignment.

The company he worked for decided to reward him for his labors in Missouri and the following year sent him to Washington, D.C. where he took charge of the building of a double track trolley line from Baltimore to Washington. Subsequently he went to Annapolis to lay out car lines. In 1909 he supervised the building of the high school in Randolph. In 1923 (?) he received a commission (to go to?) Vermont and survey a partially built town, Richville, near Manchester. In 1928 he was employed to make a topographical survey for the State Park near Brockton.

In March 1934 Mr. Locke was given a dinner when he retired as city engineer. At that time he was hailed as the oldest active surveyor in the United States. Replying to several speeches of felicitation he told about visiting Salamanca when the settlement was known as "West Town" and there was a road where Main Street now is they (sic) called "Dug Way." Mr. Locke recalled that a traveler had to get across the Allegany River the best way he could.

Mr. Locke has resided at Ellicottville, Little Valley, Randolph, and then returned to Little Valley.

From an undated, unsourced item: Locke Fiddles and Wins First at Ellicottville Mr. C.G. Locke won the first prize of $10 at the Old Fiddler's contest held at Ellicottville last evening. There were four contestants and three other prizes were given.

Salamanca, N.Y. Republican-Press, Tuesday, February 15, 1938 Charles G. Locke Derides Changing Name of Fish Hill Veteran Surveyor Who Spent Boyhood On Mountain Named for Grandfather Names Its Illustrious Sons

The movement initiated in Ellicottville by some of Karl Fahrner's skiing disciples to change the name of Fish Hill to Mount Arlberg because of a fancied resemblance to a famous sking slope of that in Austria has found anything but favor with some native sons of old Cattaraugus County.

One such dissenter is Charles G. Locke of Salamanca, civil engineer, railroad builder, fiddler, whose maternal grandfather, Nathaniel Fish, was the first white settler on the hill.

Mr. Locke, who from long following his profession in Cattaraugus county probably knows more about the land, its boundaries and history than any other individual, believes names which long have been applied to localities have a value too great to be lost.

He is rather derisive, as well, of attempts to change names grown common from long and wide usage.

Says Name Fish Will Stay

"There's about as much chance of them changing the name of Fish Hill as there is of changing the name of Salamanca," Mr. Locke declared in expressing his opposition to the movement.

"Children born and raised on that hill will continue to call it Fish Hill, let them do what they will to change it," he chuckled. "The younsters live up there now already know it as Fish Hill and to them it will remain Fish Hill."

The veteran engineer - he was 87 years of age last August 27th and still continues the arduous work of surveying - takes a family pride in Fish Hill and its history.

Nathaniel Fish, says his grandson, bought land on the hill from the Holland Land Company and moved there sometime about 1810, more than a century and a quarter ago. He first built a log house. In 1820, however, Fish Hill had assumed such importance in the development of Cattaraugus county that he erected an hotel at the top of the long, steep ascent from Ellicottville, the then county seat. He maintained the inn there for 20 years, his grandson says.

Nathaniel Fish and his inn were known far and wide, and the early settlers appropriately called the hill on which the inn stood Fish Hill.

Noted Men Born on Hill

The hill is of historic interest otherwise, however. "Fish Hill has given at least three noted ment to the world," Mr. Locke explained. "One of them was General Patrick Jones. He was born on the hill - his people settled there about 1830, I imagine. Patrick Jones, when he was a young man, studied law with A.G. Rice in Ellicottville. When the Civil War broke out he went into the Union Army, and rose to the rank of general. And after the war he was postmaster of New York City."

Antother noted son of Fish Hill was John Charlton. "He went to Canada," Mr. Locke narrates. "He got into the lumbering business, and later was sent to the Canadian Parliament. He was one of the illustrious members of parliament."

Mr. Locke did not at once say who the third illustrious son of the famous old Cattaraugus hill was, but anyone knowing Charley Locke and his brand of humor could well guess by his grin as he waited for the question.

"You were the third one, weren't you, Mr. Locke?" the interrogator prompted.

He confessed it readily, but at once admitted he was not born on the hill. Instead, he was born in nearby Little Valley, the youngest sone of Edwin Oretus Locke and Mary Nahana Fish Locke.

First White Child Born in Town

Mr. Locke's mother, Mary Nahana Fish Locke, born on Fish Hill December 3, 1820, was the first white child born in the Town of Mansfield.

His father died, however, when Charles was but three years of age, and the boy then was taken to Fish Hill, and reared in the home of his uncle, Samuel Own. His boyhood was spent on the hill that bears his grandfather's name.

Mr. Locke's remark that it would be as easy to change the name of Salamanca as to change that of Fish Hill brought the reminder that the city's name is of foreign derivation. It was named for Salamanca, Spain, since it was an A & G & W railroad town and the Marquis of Salamanca, who visited it in its very early history, was a large stockholder in that railroad.

Mr. Locke pointed out this fact, and the additional fact that up to that time the early residents of the place had made no final decision as to a name. Various names, Mr. Locke said, had been applied to the little settlement, among them Hemlock, before the Mrquis came to look over his railroad property. Fish Hill had been a name in common use many, many years before.

"When I first saw Salamanca," Mr. Locke remembered, "a courduroy road crossed the swamp where Main street now is. The principal settlement was Bucktooth, to the west, now West Salamanca."

There was good reason, Mr. Locke says, to name Salamanca for the Spanish nobleman who helped finance the railroad that brought the place into being. But he can see no reason to try to change the name of Fish Hill in a resemblance, fancied or otherwise, to some hill in Austria.

" 'Berg' means hill," said Mr. Locke, "buit I don't know what 'Arl' means - perhaps it is Fish. Anyhow, Fish Hill is good enough - we can understand that."

Charles Locke, so far as can be determined, has the distinction of being the oldest surveyor, in point of length of service, in the United States. Mr. Locke became actively engaged in surveying about 1880 at Ellicottville, after he had spent...and teaching school, and for several years divided his time between Cattaraugus county and the oil fields of Pennsylvania. For three years, 1894-96, he was engaged in making a survey in the Adirondacks for the State of New York, then in 1897 went to Pennsylvania to survey and build a 25-mile long railroad for the Pennsylvania Lumber Company.

In 1905 he went to Cleveland, O., employed by the city and the Nickel Plate Railroad to make plans for the elimination of grade crossings within the city, and was engaged there two years.

Next he surveyed a 14-mile railroad from Mansfield, O., to Ashland. Then he established grades for a railroad on the face of a precipice between Hannibal, Mo., and Alaska, five miles distant.

Returning to Cattaraugus county, he supervised, in 1909, the erection of the old high school building in Randolph. Since then he was been engaged in Engineering work for the County of Cattaraugus; the City of Salamanca, who engineer he was several years; various villages and townships in the county, and for private individuals.

Still healthy and active at the age of nearly 88 years, he has spent nearly 57 years in the active practice of his profession.

One of his most recent jobs was the surveying at Randolph of property being taken over there by a new industry.

Last week Mr. Locke, with W.A. Chase of Olean, was engaged in surveying a tract of timber far back in the Humphrey hills, near the Allegany town line. There was considerable snow on the ground, and the two found many deer tracks. "Mr. Chase told me I had him beat," commented Mr. Locke in speaking of the arduous climbing and trampling about they did in the woods.

He was buried in 1828 in Walton Cemetery, Moriah, Essex, New York. He died on 1 Jul 1828 at the age of 41 in Westport, Essex, New York. The Walton Locke cemetery in Moriah, NY was abandoned after the death of the last owner, Lucinda Locke, wife of Isaac Mulliken Locke. Unfortunately, this cemetery was vandalized and many of the stones destroyed around 1970.With great difficulty, over the past 2 years, I located a 1932 transcript for the cemetery and subsequently managed to obtain title, with 2 co-owner cousins. Unfortunately, on my last visit, it became apparent there is at least one grave that we can't identify, even with the 1932 transcript. What was your source for the Walton-Locke cemetery references in your book? My hope is someone had an earlier list that may be better than the 1932 list.BTW: My intention is to slowly restore the cemetery and have the title pass to subsequent generations of descendants of Lucinda and Isaac Mulliken Locke. Thanks,Stephen Cywin.

Starrett, Jr., and more recently by Dea. Singer. He was skillful in the treatment of sores, letting blood, extracting teeth, and in relieving such complaints as readily yielded to roots and herbs. It is said also that he laid claim to some knowledge in astrology; but whether his proficiency in this science was equal to his skill in surgery, we are unable to say. He lived on this farm till his death in 1774," p. 137.

Eaton also made reference to son Abraham Locke: "...a saw mill had been erected in 1774 by Col. Starrett, John Lermond, and Abraham Locke, son of the doctor," p. 178.
