Drake – Take Care Album

Front Cover Back Cover CD

Page 3: Analysis of digipaks

Analysis The front cover features an mage of the artist Drake, this has been done as he is the main focus and demonstrates his star persona. This cover follows the typical codes and conventions of rappers i.e wear big chains, expensive clothing, like lots of gold. The use of a wide range of gold items in the cover suggests wealth and status. Unlike most album covers this one feature a small title in the left corner in a gold hand written type font moreover the cover doesn’t even have the name of the artist on it this could have been done as this reinforces how much star power persona matters because audiences know who he is without him needing to place his name on the front cover. The colour scheme features gold's, bronzes and black. This simple colour scheme conveys class and wealth. The back of the album is very simplistic with only the bare essentials placed on it, it has a list of the songs in the album and legal information on the bottom in smaller fonts with logos of the studios involved with the album, the font being used is a simple and easy to read san serif font which looks very classical and appealing wrote in a gold colour in front for a dark foreground making it the main focus of the back of the digipak. The cd graphics is again very simplistic with very minimal things placed on it, I think that the theme of the digipak is to be very simple and but also look like a luxurious item. The colour scheme used on this follows the rest of the digipak. Something that I found interesting on this digipak was that the cd graphics was the only thing that had the artists name on it, unlike other digipaks which will often uses the artists name as much as possible to further advertise the artist, this could have been done as the artist feels necessary to somewhat identify his brand but also knows that his fans will know its his album with out even seeing his name on the cover.

Rihanna – Loud Album

Front Cover Back Cover CD

Page 5: Analysis of digipaks

AnalysisThe front cover of this digipak contains only a close up shot of the artist, the artist has bright red hair and also matching red lipstick, the use of such striking colours could have been done as it relates to the title of the album ‘Loud’ furthermore it could also connote strong emotions and also love and possibly danger in her songs. On the cover the artist does not share contact with the camera instead she is looking down this could have been done to show that she is somewhat innocent, also if looked at carefully we can see that she has a tattoo on her neck this challenges the innocence in her pose and suggests that she has a rebellious side to her. The back of the digipak shows an image of the artist in a low cut dress showing off her legs this has been done to sexualize the artist this is often done in the genre of music Rihanna makes music for, as it shows how attractive she is and also challenges her innocence. On the left there is a list of all the songs in her album and below that is legal information and a barcode, this has been wrote in a small san serif font in a similar colour to the background which makes it hard to read, this could have been done to make her image as the main focus of the back of the digipak. The colour scheme used on the back are very soft pinks this is often related with innocence and purity and is challenged by the sexual pose that Rihanna is displaying. The cd graphics contains an image of a pink rose with water drops on it with artist name and legal information on it in very small fonts in a colour scheme match the background making it very hard to see the text. I feel that the overall them of the digipak was to challenge Rihanna’s innocence and show that she has a somewhat rebellious/naught side to her.
