Crime- Fast and Furious 7 In the film opening for Fast and Furious 7, we begin with Universal Studios Ident, which is attended with deep slow bass tones, the mood changes into a more sinister passed level as it shows a few of the credits. This is then accompanied by a single establishing shot which allows us to see where the location of the film is taking place as well as text display at the bottom left hand corner of the screen it says “London England”. This Mise-en-scene shows a very urban city filled with people and life, it has a bright tone to it which gives the mood that everything is calm and normal. The weather is being shown as clear and sunny which would make the viewer feel eased and relaxed. The shot backs up from becoming an establishing shot to an over the shoulder shot. As the first character turns around wearing a rich suit as well as a rich long coat the mise-en-scene shows us that he is someone who has money and is financially stable. We see him talking, it isn’t until the camera pans out that we see that he is standing in a hospital room with someone lying down on a hospital bed. The mood drastically changes from being a calm surreal setting to a depressing scene as the music in the background changes to a slower deeper and longer theme this is a connotation of how a hospital scene or death scene are represented as a slow depressing scene in a film. The scene is filtered with a hazy blue tone in a way representing death and the coldness the character feels to see his brother lying on a hospital bed. The camera then pans in to a two shot close up on the character on the bed focusing on his scars and face then focusing onto the first character who is sitting beside him and goes into a mid- shot, all of this is done in a single take with no cuts. The music throughout this scene sounds like a slow dramatic violin creating a sense of disturbance in the scene. This film opening represents the genre of crime as it shows a man who has been mortally wounded lying on a hospital bed. This portrays the genre of crime as a person who has been mortally wounded this is because stereotypically a person who is on a hospital bed could suggest 2 things, one of those things could be that the person has a disease or is in life threatening condition, or the person was a victim in a crime or a target who has been mortally wounded. If the audience have not yet seen the previous 6 movies, they would be curious as to why there is a person lying on a hospital bed and what significance does he have to the story? Crime- Fast and Furious 7

In the film opening for Fast and Furious 7, we begin with Universal Studios Ident, which is attended with deep slow bass tones, the mood changes into a more sinister passed level as it shows a few of the credits. This begins to create the genre of mystery as the opening doesn’t show the viewer what has taken place and why the person is lying on a hospital bed.

Crime- Legend

The film opening for “Legend” begins with STUDIOCANALS ident then transitions to WORKING TITLES ident which is later followed up by credits. The first shot we can see is an establishing shot showing the audience where the scene and movie takes place as it visually shows us a birdy eye view of London in the 1960s. We are unable to visually see that the location is London but the dialogue from an unknown voice who sounds like a woman verbally tells the audience that it is London in the 1960s. The shot is accompanied by a theme music/ tune that represents what music would have been playing in the 1960S this helps the audience understand and visually imagine London in that time era. The scene cuts to a scene showing an old 1960s car driving through a busy street at night the mise-en-scene in this shot is the people in the street, the way they dressed up in costumes that you would stereotypically see people wearing in the 60s in London. Another prop they use is the car, the can noticed as an old car which you would not be able to see in current times which helps create the atmosphere of the movie being taking place within London in the 60s. The next show cuts to a two shot, slightly low angle shot of two men wearing rich suits, sitting in the backseat of a car smoking a cigar. This suggests that the two males are rich and are well respected as they have their very own chauffer. Both males look exactly the same which instantly makes the audience assume they are brothers as well as twins. There are no signs that

would indicate to the audience that this is a crime movie thus far. The narrative voice, of the woman informs the audience that these two men are “Gangster princes of the city” which shows the audience that these two men are criminals who are doing well in life as well as making the audience assume that their financial wealth is all because of their hierarchy in the criminal world in London. The shot cuts to a close up of one of the twins and the non-diegetic-sound which is the woman speaking tells a little about the character and how his name is “Don Kray” and he is “a one-man London Mob” instantly showing the audience that the twins are strong and are well known amongst London’s criminal community. The shot is flipped and shows a close up of the second twin and talks a little about him however the non-diegetic-sound refers to the man as “My Reggie” which creates mystery within the scene as it makes the audience wonder who she is because she specifically refers to this male as “my” which shows a personal relationship between the unsourced voice and the male “Reggie” the camera cuts to a two shot of the men whilst the car is still driving then cuts to a black screen and show the title of the movie “Legend”. The movie utilizes the genre of crimes aspects by not giving too much away at the beginning of the movie and choses to create more of a mystery for the audience to wonder what is happening.
