AN UPDATEFROM US

December 2019

Page 2: AN UPDATE FROM US - NZ Wood Products

2019 in the rearviewIt’s been all go for IBuilt this year, with the release of innovative new products and lots of amazing events.

The IBuilt team has been an active participant in ADNZ (Architectural Designers NZ), putting on regional IBuilt training workshops and supporting their annual conference in Queenstown this year. We also attended at the regional design awards dinners – an amazing event, and some deserving recipients!

You might have seen us at the biannual BUILDNZ Tradeshow in July at the ASB showgrounds. Once again the team did a great job of demonstrating the flexibility of our products – our stand was built from scratch, using engineered timber, plywood, IBeams and CoreClad cladding. Visitors to the stand got free software training and technical support for any plans they brought with them. It was a great way to meet people and give them a chance to see our products in action. Our team was joined by representatives from Hyne, Nelon Pine and PNGFP to help man the stand.

Our sponsorship of the Scaffold, Access and Riggers Association (SARNZ) continued too. Along with financial support, we also offered advice and opportunities for networking.

You can keep updated throughout 2020 on new events, industry changes and new products – our brochures are available on our site at http://nzwoodproducts.co.nz/products/brands/resources

We wish you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Our recent work to showcase

Family holiday home plywood perfectionPerched high on a ridge between Leigh and Pakiri, north of Auckland, the Gray family’s piece of land has been slowly but surely transformed from a miniature pine forest into their home away from home. As Brian explains, it was important to the family that the design of the home was completely different to their townhouse.

“When we go on holiday, we want everything to be different, not just where we are.” Brian explains: “As the property is high up on a ridge, we needed a product that could stand the test of time against weather elements like strong winds. We also wanted to create something that was unique in design – bold yet simple, with a rugged, natural finish – something that complemented the beauty of the north-to-south ocean views.”

Brian worked with builder Kevin Lawton to create a stunningly minimalistic yet warm home. Plywood was chosen because of its stark contrast to the plaster board the Grays are used to at home.

Kevin used a mix of I-Built’s 2.4 and 2.7m radiata structural plywood for the home’s wall linings, ceilings, bunk beds and bespoke cabinetry.

Each plywood sheet was carefully selected for its natural characteristics, imperfections and all.

IBuilt has a large range of specialty plywood products from structural building grades to high quality hardwood ply to suit all exterior and interior applications. This, amongst many reasons, was why Brian chose to use IBuilt products for his project.

Composite product ‘Ultim8’ decking solutionIBuilt used to create dream outdoor space

The ultimate Kiwi home dream – a large outdoor living space – would be nothing without the humble deck. When Del Woodford and his family built their new home in Cambridge, plans showed your traditional wooden decks – a style they didn’t think would suit their home. So, they moved into their new home with pallets for decks (classic Kiwi number 8 wire) until they had decided how they wanted to use their outdoor spaces.

The family’s black brick stack with white stria home is now characterised by a whopping back deck the size of a small home in Auckland – 75sqm to be exact – accompanied by a smaller deck that leads to the front entrance of the home.

“I looked at a bunch of hardwood decking options – pine, which was the most economical option, but requires regular staining; Kwila, which in my experience has never lasted long – so as an alternative I started researching composite decking solutions. I received a sample of Ultim8 and honestly, it’s like the product was made to fit our home.”

Creating the right aesthetic – without the hassle

Del talks about how he was looking for a something that would maintain its structural integrity and performance over time, and require very little maintenance. He had a specific aesthetic in mind, too – a large deck area perfect for entertaining, with seating and open planter boxes built in. He was also looking for that clean and polished finish.

Okoume Ply Pronounced oh-kuh-mey, Okoume is often called Okoume Mahogany – and for good reason. Its pale red hue and inform texture makes for a striking feature in anything from furniture to flooring. Lightweight and easy to work with, Okoume Ply brings this beautiful look into any design – think rich panelling for a library or adding a touch of lux with a feature wall. Manufactured with a poplar core interior and glue bond, Okoume Ply is available as BB/CC grade, 9mm and 12mm thicknesses, and 2.4m and 2.7m lengths

A new supplier for F14 PlywoodWe are excited to be working with PNG Forest Products, who supply our F14 range of structural plywood products. It’s all part of ensuring we deliver the best in price, service and quality. As before, this new structural ply is independently certified by the EWPAA, and is Chain of Custody Certified from PEFC controlled sources. PNG Forest Products uses veneer from Hoop pines species giving a high F14 grade product. Checkout our IBuilt Plywood brochures at www.nzwoodproducts.co.nz

New and notable! We’re always looking for new and innovative ways to improve build times, quality and budgets, which is why we’ve seen so many new products added to our range this year.

CoreClad: Superior durability and flexibility CoreClad is manufactured using high-strength plantation Hoop pine sourced from PEFC-controlled sources. Each veneer is ACQ treated to meet H3.2 treatment standards before being bonded together. This means cut edges don’t need to be retreated, saving time on the building site.

CoreClad also meets AS/NZS 2269:2012, is third-party certified by the EWPAA and meets NZBC cladding durability requirements.

The range of lengths (2440mm, 2745mm, 3050mm) reduce installation time and give options where longer panels are required, while the band-sawn face gives a textured finish. CoreClad comes with 9mm-wide vertical grooves at 150mm centres, or ungrooved. For more information visit www.nzwoodproducts.co.nz or contact your IBuilt sales rep.

WallART, wet area panelling Ideal for residential and commercial builds including schools and hospitals, this 3mm high-pressure laminate is perfect for wet areas for kitchens, bathrooms and shower recesses. It is water resistant, won’t rot, fade or discolour, and is mould resistant. Compared to ceramic tiles, it can withstand higher impacts and is installed without grout, reducing the risk of mould. Available plain or in a tile pattern, and in eight colours with matching joiners, this WallART is competitively priced, easy to install and comes with a seven-year warranty.

IBuilt is growing – especially in our engineered timber business, thanks to the designers, architects and builders who trust us with their important work. Our merchant retail customers also play an important part in that growth.

We’ve seen some exciting innovations this year too, in our products and in the way we operate. CoreClad Plywood Cladding has just arrived in our warehouses and we have the WallArt wet wall panelling for bathrooms and kitchens.

Back at HQ, a Tiger Stop Control system on our saws is boosting productivity and accuracy of cutting, and making life easier for our warehouse team. Check out the rest of the mini-mag and our website for more details.

Spotlight on the team

I’m proud of them and their commitment. Each issue we like to give you a snapshot of who these valued team members are. No doubt, you may recognise some of them.

A new member of that magic team, Paul Taylor, has joined us as our General Manager. We’re proud to have him directing us through our future growth and change of the business.

Thank you for your custom this year and we wish you a wonderful holiday with family and friends.
