An UPDATE from Elsie and Danny,  

Directors, DPM–India 

Dear Friends, Supporters and Prayer Partners, 

Greetings to you in the precious name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. We are excited to share with 

you a summary of the outreaches we did in the month of March: 

Christhupur, Orissa: 

We had a call on 5th March requesting us to be in Orissa on 9th 

March for a meeting in the Gajapati District of Orissa. Covering 

the 1100‐odd kilometers from Trichy to Behrampur in Orissa 

almost seemed impossible within the short span of time we had, 

but the plea was so strong and a crowd of 700 people were 

expected to attend this meeting. So, on 8th morning we set out 

from Trichy driving 4 hours to Chennai and then 2 hours on a 

small aircraft to Vishakapatnam and finally a night‐long journey 

from Vishakapatnam to Behrampur by train. On the 8th in the 

afternoon they took us by jeep on a 4 hour drive up into the Koraput hills. While driving through some 

areas of forest, we were told these were Naxalite areas...but PTL, Jesus was with us and we reached our 

destination—a place called Chelligada in Orissa District. 

After dropping our bags off at the Baptist Church guest room, a 

9 x 6 ft. room with no bath and toilet attached (only a small 

common one outside for all five of us who went), we headed off 

to the village in the hills called Christhupur where the meetings 

were to be held. We had expected to be speaking only on 

Sunday morning but because we arrived on Saturday we were 

promptly marched off to speak at a ladies meeting.

Arriving in pitch darkness, we were ordered out of the jeep 

and asked to walk all the way through the streets of the 

village up to the church. Little did we realise that this was a 

traditional welcome and all the way before us, the youth of 

the church beat drums and danced with all their might. They 

would stop from time to time and shout “Yeshu Masih Ki 

Jai” meaning “Praise be to Jesus Christ.” 

At the “small ladies meeting” were 100 people—ladies, 

men, youth and children! So, speaking on The Divine 

Exchange, we ministered to the people. We finished late at night and returned to our quarters. Danny 

and I were given the privilege of the room while the others slept in the church. 

Next morning we were off to the main meeting for which a tent had 

been put up outside the church. The material of the tent was so light 

that it was as hot inside as it was outside. After the regular procession 

around the tent meeting (which should have actually been through 

the whole village to collect people but was cut short for our sakes) we 

entered the tent and it was filled instantly. 

My translator, Timotheu Jagabandhu, one of the very few educated 

amongst the Kui tribe, was unable to keep pace with my English. Fortunately, the Hindi I had learnt as a 

second language at school came in handy and for the first time in my life I preached in Hindi. Pastor 

Thomas Varghese, who came with us, estimated the 

gathering to be around 700 people. But within a little 

while there was no more space inside and the tent 

was instantly extended with some coarse cloth. Still 

no room...so people simply sat in the shade in front 

of the houses that were behind the tent. More than a 

thousand people attended and listened eagerly as I 

did some very basic teaching from Entering the 

Presence of God through Worship. They are a people 

that sing beautifully...no musical instruments save 

the drum, but there is a special move of the Spirit 

when they sing. The service went on until 2:30 p.m. 

We were scheduled to leave at 3:00 p.m. so we 

could catch the train to Andhra that night from 

Behrampur, but they were not willing to let us go. 

They wanted us to do a “post‐lunch” session. So 

great is the thirst of these people for teaching 

from the Word of God. They said to me, “People 

read a verse from the Bible and preach to us, but 

they describe their experiences which do not make 

sense to us. But you read a verse from the Bible 

and tell us what it means in terms of the Bible. This 

is what we want—to understand the Bible better.”

This district is just adjacent to Kandhamal where the anti‐Christian riots happened and several of the 

displaced Christians live within this community. 

Repalle, Andhra Pradesh 

Again we had a night‐long journey into Andhra by train and 

arrived at a Pastor’s meeting in the Guntur district of Andhra. 

We taught on Curse to Blessing and many of the pastors 

admitted that they themselves needed deliverance from 

curses before they could begin to minister to others. Telugu 

copies of Life Changing Spiritual Power (LCSP) books were 

distributed here. Sixty pastors attended. We left 40 more for 

pastors who could not attend. 

Koduru, Andhra Pradesh 

Travelling by auto for almost an hour the next day we crossed the 3 kilometre wide Krishna River into 

the Krishna district. Going into a town called Koduru, we ministered to a small group of 40 pastors. I 

spoke on the The Divine Exchange as we felt 

that basic teaching was needed more for this 

group before we went into any sort of deeper 

teaching. Again, there was distribution of 

LCSP in the regional language, Telugu. 

The outcome of these two meetings was that 

the pastor who organised the meetings has 

requested that we train 4 pastors in the Bible 

College curriculum so that they can take the 

Bible College curriculum to the four parts 

(North, South, East & West) of Andhra into the rural areas and train the pastors groups there, in their 

own mother tongue, Telugu. They have requested that we do the training in July which is the lean 

period when they do not have many meetings due to monsoons in Andhra and the pastors can leave 

their churches for 15 days to come to Trichy and stay with us to be trained.

Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu: 

Again we were requested to do an LCSP distribution and 

Curse to Blessing seminar at a Pastors’ fellowship. This is an 

area of Tamil Nadu we thought we would never be able to 

penetrate simply because most pastors here are well‐

educated and many of them just love to argue with any 

preacher for no benefit at all. But because we were invited, 

we decided to go and do the teaching. Here, they listened 

with scepticism at the beginning and slowly began to open 

their hearts as they realised the truth in the teaching. 

At the end a pastor stood before me shaking his head and said, “I can’t believe that Jesus hung there 

naked on the cross for me. I know...I’ve read about it...I’ve preached about it…but it never really sunk in 

until you taught about it. There is no greater shame than the shame that came upon Jesus. All that I 

suffer is nothing in comparison to what He has endured.” 

The pastors here were from diverse denominations. One came from the Salvation Army and after 

listening to me pleaded that we give him the books in Malayalam, Telugu and Hindi so that he could 

send it to his Bishop and the higher officers of the Salvation Army. Of course, we were more than happy 

to do that! 

We have been requested again to do a two‐day seminar here sometime later this year where the 

pastors want to attend with their wives so that they are blessed as a family. 

It has been a busy month but very strategic as well. The Orissa meetings put us in contact with two 

senior leaders in Orissa state—Timotheu Jagabandhu and Pastor Thomas Varghese. Now the door is 

   open for us to minister to 150 pastors in Kandhamal district (where the riots happened) and equip them 

with Derek’s material. A strategy has been put in place for Andhra because they realise we cannot do it 

all and they must find leaders amongst themselves to take the teaching to the far corners of their state. 

And in Tamil Nadu one of the toughest leaders’ groups has been touched. Surely there will be many 

open doors from there into the south.
