Rich Harshman, Chair, Board of DirectorsUnited Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania

Bobbi Watt Geer, President and CEOUnited Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania

Dear friends,

There is no sugar-coating the events of this year. We continue to be tested like never before, and most of us probably look forward to enthusiastically flipping the calendar.

But before we do, we need to pause and reflect on where we are today, and how we must do better going forward. Because in truth, far too many of our neighbors were struggling before COVID-19 and its economic consequences. And the year ahead will present new and deepening challenges for our entire region.

Here’s what inspires us most: In the first few months of the pandemic, there was an unmistakable surge in empathy and compassion throughout our community. Perhaps it was because we all got an unpleasant taste of what it feels like to be isolated and cut-off from society and worried about our health and financial well-being. Because many of us know someone who’s lost a family member to the virus, or a job due to the economic crisis. Because all of our students were struggling to get a quality education.

Let’s hope those painful emotions fade, but also remind us of the daily challenges so many of our neighbors faced—even in the best of times.

Our goal at United Way is to anticipate a rapidly changing environment to meet human needs in every corner of our region. We must continue to respond to suffering and economic uncertainty, encourage recovery and reimagine what the new normal can look like for our most vulnerable communities.

We must also address the financial health of our agency partners, as demand for human services continue to swell. Our agencies have been doing tireless work, and United Way has partnered with them to adapt and collaborate to continue to provide essential services.

So at this crucial point in time, what is the state of United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania? The network of generous corporate partners we’ve built over the decades is stronger than ever. Our staff and volunteers have soldiered through the crises and continue to deliver results. And even as the systems we’ve put into place have been strained, they have proven to be resilient and highly effective.

Thank you for your support of United Way, especially this year. Truly, we have never felt more… United!

PA 2-1-1 Southwest is the hotline to connect people

throughout our region to critical human services

24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Staffed by our highly trained resource navigators, 2-1-1 provides multiple ways for people to access help, including calls, texts and live chats.

Not surprisingly, this year has seen a 21 percent increase in contacts over an already high-volume previous year—many of them first-time callers who had never thought of themselves as needing assistance. During the height of COVID-19 (March-April), daily calls seeking basic human needs spiked 140 percent. Overall in-bound calls seeking assistance has doubled over the past two years.

Digitally evolving 2-1-1 In order to greatly expand access and service, United Way began working with Deloitte Consulting to enhance technology and response automation to allow our 2-1-1 operators to serve even more people in need. This vital upgrade was made possible through generous corporate donations from PNC, PPG, Dollar Bank, Koppers and Bank of America Charitable Foundation.

MARCH 16, 2020This was the day when 2-1-1 took on a whole new role within our community.

As the magnitude of the pandemic became clear, United Way rapidly

expanded its contact center to assist the Allegheny County Health Department COVID-19 response and relay human service information to the public. By

quickly training approximately 35 existing staffers, United Way was able to handle the flood of calls and allow

county officials to concentrate on managing the public health crisis.

Donna is a senior citizen who lives independently in Butler County. Her existing health issues have made her compromised, unable to leave her home during the shutdown. Without internet service and almost out of food, she called 2-1-1 from her flip phone. With help from her trained resource navigator, Donna was referred to five food distribution services in her area that would help provide her with meals during the shutdown. In addition, arrangements were made to have the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank drop off an emergency box of food to Donna later that same day.

“I don’t need the internet to connect with help in my community. I just need 2-1-1.”

—Donna

Ivy is a single mother who lives in Westmoreland County. Although still technically employed, like so many others her hours had been drastically cut during COVID-19. Ineligible for unemployment and having already used her stimulus check to cover previous bills, Ivy got hit with major car repair bills. This left her unable to cover her rent. After unsuccessfully trying to negotiate with her landlord and fearing homelessness, she contacted 2-1-1. The resource navigator connected her to Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Greensburg (an EBN partner agency), who agreed to cover her back rent and help her get back on her feet.

“I wanted to handle it myself but just got over my head. I’m so thankful for 2-1-1.”

—Ivy

Warren lives alone in his Pittsburgh neighborhood on a small fixed income. He has no access to transportation. In normal times, he walks to get his prescriptions and food. But with local businesses shut down and his EBT card depleted for the month, Warren found himself completely cut off from basic needs. He called 2-1-1 and was connected to the nearest food distribution site, a nearby soup kitchen and referrals to two organizations that provide assistance with daily errands. Because those services were already closed for the day, they even arranged a box of non-perishable food to be delivered that evening.

“When the world closed down, I didn’t know where to turn for food.”

—Warren

At our community’s most dire time, companies and organizations stepped up like never before to do whatever it takes to help their fellow neighbors. Across United Way’s five-county regional footprint, we brought together companies, nonprofits, and philanthropic foundations to respond to the outpouring of need. Thanks to their unprecedented generosity and leadership, United Way was able to quickly launch several major initiatives.

Students and Families Food Relief FundUnited Way partnered with the PNC Foundation and Eat‘n Park Hospitality Group to help provide more than 260,000 meals to students and families in need due to lost jobs, wages and the shutdown of schools and youth programs. Local businesses provided additional and essential support, many of which were minority and women-owned businesses. Partners included Aunt Cheryl’s Café, Billy’s Way Station, LCC, Community Kitchen Pittsburgh, EAT Initiative, Inc. and Love Rocks Café.

Regional Food and Supplies Transportation NetworkFood insecurity and the need for supplies such as masks, hand sanitizer and toilet paper became an enormous concern during COVID-19 response. United Way launched a transportation network with invaluable help from our partner agencies including A Second Chance, ACCESS Transportation Systems, Alliance for Nonprofit Resources, Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania and Oasis Transportation. As of June 30, 139,370 meals, 3,429 boxes of PPE and 3,297 food boxes totaling 82,425 pounds of food were distributed across ten counties.

This effort was made possible by support from the Pittsburgh Foundation, Hillman Foundation, RK Mellon Foundation and Heinz Endowments via the Emergency Action Fund.

McElhattan Foundation and the Pittsburgh SteelersWith schools and traditional youth programs shut down due to COVID-19, thousands of area children and teens needed safe and positive ways to spend time. To help fill that void, United Way partnered with the Pittsburgh Steelers and McElhatten Foundation to provide $653,530 to two dozen nonprofit organizations that provided youth summer programming.

Collaboration, Coordination and Communitywide ResponseOne of the most valuable tools during crisis response is accurate information. During the first weeks of the pandemic, United Way led a coordinated effort with leaders in Allegheny, Butler and Westmoreland counties to share data on needs and response. By partnering with The Pittsburgh Foundation, Heinz Endowments, Hillman Family Foundations and RK Mellon, we issued our first ever report of non-profit human service agency needs during COVID-19 based on survey data within the first weeks of the crisis. This provided an invaluable blueprint to marshall a more effective, integrated response.

Throughout the entire 2020 pandemic response, United Way has strongly promoted diversity and partnered with dozens of businesses owned by African Americans.

ACTIVATING PARTNERSHIPS AND FOUNDATIONS

UNITED WAY OF SOUTHWESTERN PA 2020 Report to the Community July 2019–June 2020 | 9

Special Day of CaringOn June 20, over 400 volunteers participated in our first ever regional Special Day of Caring. This virtual event provided individuals and families the opportunity to help those in the community while following COVID-19 safety protocols. Volunteers were provided with instructions and inspiration on how to assemble essential care packages from the safety of their home. Care packages included diapers, activity kits for young children, personal protection equipment and personalized cards to brighten a senior’s day. Volunteers then simply dropped them off at their local United Way office. 1600+ Care Packages were delivered through agency partners across our region.

Open Your Heart to a SeniorWhen it became apparent that COVID-19 posed an especially grave threat to older people, United Way staff and volunteers mobilized to help provide grocery shopping and delivery to area seniors. New partnerships

were formed with local grocery stores, and volunteers throughout the region came forward to help shop and transport much-needed food and supplies. In all, 1,389 volunteers provided 52,053 hours of volunteer service to 10,069 older adults.

Connect UThis year we launched our pilot class for Connect U, a bold program to immerse cohorts from across the region in the human service issues facing our community. The goal was to develop the next generation of involved civic leaders who are invested in the mission and impact of United Way. Over the course of eight weeks, our 19 participants interacted with Board Members and volunteers, United Way staff leadership and representatives from agency partners. They also were given exclusive access on-site at some of our vital agencies and our 2-1-1 Call Center. In addition to creating strong United Way champions, our inaugural Connect U class raised over $13,000 through their peer-to-peer campaign.
