• 80% say their parents don’t enforce screen time limits5
• Only 56% talk to parents about online safety more than once a year4
• 50% said they have a Snapchat account1
• 30% believe Google searches give ‘true & accurate information’ 1
• 38% can correctly identify an advert on a Google search 1
• 18% have seen something that made them uncomfortable on a live stream 4
• 17% undertaken risky online behaviour in the past year1
• 50% say they have seen sexual and violent material online 2
• 10% say they’ve been asked to undress online4
• 13% of secondary students say they’ve been sent a nude image2
• A reported decrease in “Stranger Danger” 4
• A reported increase in sexual & violent content, incl’ self harm4
• A reported increase in mental health issues4
• You MUST be 13+ to have most Social Media Accounts• 90% of Year 7 said they have at least one3

•Uncapped Data Packages / Internet / No filtering
•Apps that data harvest & share
•Social Media privacy & built in addictive features
•Naked Selfies / Live streaming / Illegal downloading
•Broadcasting to a global audience on “live Streams”

•Screen time addiction is now a diagnosable Mental Health disorder• With withdrawal symptoms that are equal to class A drugs
•Conflicting research BUT…• Apps create dopamine in the brain• “Snap streaks” have created “Streak sitting”• “Fortnite” has been accused of being deliberately
addictive• Push notifications create FOMO (fear of missing out)

We Did a Survey….
Over 650 student pages on Facebook clearly connecting the owner to our College.
In our student survey:
88% said they publish their photo with a full face showing
17% said they publish their full name2% said they publish their address2% said they publish their telephone number
(1Survey sample of 590 students in years 7 to 13, 2018)
What Can Parents Do?
What Can Parents Do?
• Stay in our management system for iPads, if not…• Adjust privacy settings on every non-managed device & app
• Ask your ISP to Block “Adult” sites to your IP address
• Look out for VPNs, especially ‘unusual’ ones
• Google your child’s name regularly – check images / videos
• Look out for changes in behaviour
• Talk & listen to your children about their internet use
• Do it yourself, get your child to “teach” you
• Agree clear / fair (!) boundaries for online time
• Agree how & when internet enabled devices can be used
• Centralised overnight charging – ie not in bedroom
Remember...
• Understand the tools your children use – get them to show you
• Discuss Cyber bullying / Online Strangers with your children• always respect others• treat your passwords with care• Block /delete people you don’t know in real life• save any worrying conversations as evidence• don’t reply/retaliate• make sure you tell
• Report suspected cyber bullying to• School• Internet service provider• CEOP / police
