Battle of Marathon – 490BC

King Darius of Persia sent 200,000 soldiers to invade Greece and attack the Athenians. The Athenians had only 10,000 men.

The Athenians sent a runner called Pheidippides to Sparta to ask for help. He ran 120km to Sparta!

The Spartans would not help until the next full moon because they were celebrating a religious festival.

The Athenians won the battle. They had lost only 192 men and the Persians lost around 6,400 men.

The completion of the Parthenon – 432BC

Greek temple was built in Athens for the Goddess Athena of wisdom and war.

The temple was made out of big blocks of marble and moved on carts and sledges.

Inside the temple was a huge statue of Athena, which was 14 metres high! Her eyes were made out of precious jewels.

The Romans conquer Greece – 146BC

To the Romans, the Greek civilization was a source of inspiration – they were very interested in what the culture had achieved.

But the Romans were also hungry for land and power and in 146BC they conquered Greece and there was a period of Roman rule.
