Submitted photo
The “Amber’s Pumpin Insulin-Ators” team recently walked in the JDRF Walk on Wake Forest University’s campus in Winston-Salem in honor of Amber Simmons, who has juvenile diabetes. Gentry Middle School helped support and raise money for the team, with the Gentry Patriots Girls Volleyball team taking charge along with its coach Kelly Cave to help support Simmons, one of their own teammates. They raised more than $800 to help ind a cure. The team T-shirts were designed by Amber Simmons and JDRF voted her design as most outstanding and pre-sented her with a metal.

dren from underserved neighborhoods to-gether with children from more privileged circumstances. He is also leads the Univer-sity Glee Club of New York City. His choirs have toured nationally and internation-ally. Mr. Nunez has received many Choral awards and is also a composer.
The Honors Chorus performed “Kyrie” from Shubert’s Mass in G; “The Open Door” by T. Wiprud; “Tres Cantos Navi-tos” by M. Leite; “Forever Is My Song”, premier performance of the commissioned piece for the 2011 NC Honors Chorus by F. Nunez; and “Take Me To The Water” by R. Dilworth.

Millennium students participate
in Model UN competitionThe Millennium Charter Academy Mod-
el United Nations class recently sent sev-eral students to compete in a competition held at Appalachian State University for Model United Nations.
Model United Nations, also called Model UN, allows students to participate in simu-lated sessions of the United Nations with students from other schools. The goal of Model UN is to teach students about cur-rent events and offer them perspectives about life, politics, and diplomacy in other nations around the world.
To participate, each team had to take many steps in order to prepare for the com-petition. First, they had to learn about the issues presented for research, discussion, and resolution. This involved researching and collecting data about speciic coun-tries outside of their own world-sphere. After the students felt they understood the issues, they then were assigned countries which they would be representing at the competition.
Again, students had to collect data and investigate their county’s to not only un-derstand their country and how it oper-ates on a world level, but also what their country believes in terms of the issues. Finally, once all research and preparation was completed, the students went to the
competition where they engaged in policy making and problem solving in order to come up with solutions to the problems in a way similar to how the real United Na-tions operates.
The issues for this year’s competition were:
• The situation in Somalia, and concern-ing Djibouti and Eritrea (example: Famine, Drought, Anarchy, Civil War, Piracy)
• UN involvement concerning the situ-ation in Syria
• Separatist movements with legitimate claims to sovereignty; also included were issues with suppression by the host gov-ernments in those countries.
Eighty-six teams from various schools in central and western North Carolina partic-ipated in the competition. MCA sent seven teams, and
four of those teams placed with an award.
• Dana Erickson and Laura Browne - Su-perior (2nd Place) - Representing Portugal

Red Ribbon Week observed
Shoals Elementary School/Submitted photo
Shoals Elementary School celebrated Red Ribbon Week recently with several fun activities. These activities included: “Take a Stand for a Drug Free Land ” in which students wore red, white, and blue; “Waking Up to a Drug Free Land ” where students wore pajamas to school; “Crazy about Living Drug Free” where students came to school with WACKY hair; “All About Being Drug Free” in which students wore as much red as they possibly could to school; and “Do Sports Instead of Drugs” where students got to wear their favorite sports team attire. Students learned about medication safety, and the dangers of alcohol and other drugs. They created posters, read daily drug free messages, and committed to living a drug-free lifestyle. In order to make the CLIMB to success, the Shoals Mountaineers were reminded that hard work, care of one’s self and others, safety, and modeling responsibility are behaviors which include a drug-free life.

Second-grade students from Shoals Elementary School write letters to North Carolina soldiers.
Shoals Elementary School/Submitted photo
Shoals Elementary School students participated in the State Employees’ Credit Union’s second annual Support the Troops program again this year. Students wrote letters and cards of thanks to active duty National Guard soldiers from North Carolina. They met the credit union’s Fat Cat to deliver the letters which were included in care packages sent overseas. Students were ac-tively engaged in discussions about gratitude, citizenship and the history of our nation during this real world writing process. Here, Cristi Arington’s irst-grade class and Ingle Armstrong-Sloop pose for a picture with “Fat Cat.”
Fire safety taught
Shoals Elementary School/Submitted photo
Students at Shoals Elementary School learned about ire safety during the month of Octo-ber. Here, Jonathan McHone of the Pilot Knob Volunteer Fire Department, along with Principal Tracey Lewis, assist students as they make a practice exit from a classroom window.

Junior Girl Scout Troop adopts lower bed
J.J. Jones Intermediate School/Submitted photo
Junior Girl Scout Troop 40465 has adopted the lower bed at the J.J. Jones Intermediate School entrance on Riverside Drive. They planted small shrubs, tulip bulbs and pansies. They spread pine straw and will check on it to weed and water to make sure everything is growing. They received discounts from Lowe’s Hardware in Mount Airy and Halls Plants in Ararat, Va. Also, the Modern Gardeners donated the red tulip bulbs.

B.H. Tharrington Primary School/Submitted photo
Students at B.H. Tharrington Primary School raised $761.28 during their Make-A-Wish Campaign this year. When someone gives to Make-A-Wish, he or she is helping grant wishes to children with life-threatening medi-cal conditions. Most of the children have been hospitalized for many months. Many of these children are able to beat their illness, and keeping a positive mindset is so important. When wishes are granted, the child and their family will be able to take a much needed break from their hospital stays and enjoy a very special time together. Here, from left, Destiny Shockley, Isabella Beck, Laura Livengood, Raven Collins, Mrs. Martin (kinder-garten teacher), Nevaeh Beck, Brody Strader, and Mitchell Fulcher wear crazy socks.
