SPRING FLING As Spring approaches we are anxious for warm weather, trees budding, smell of fresh air as windows are opened to allow the warm breeze into our homes.

Recently there have been days that are just so spring-like with temps in the 60’s! Wow time to get those shorts and flip-flops ready to wear!!! Spring weather is so unpredictable! One day so warm you want to turn on the AC then the next day you just can’t get warm enough. Then look-out the window and you see snow flurries! Normally by the first of May the unpredictable temperatures are becoming more constant with warm weather each day. Yippee!! That’s a good reason to come out and join the folks at the AMS Spring Fling Luncheon on Wednesday, May 8 for the good food at Dutch’s Daughters, 581 Himes Avenue. Frederick, MD 21701. Folks get together at 11:30 AM to meet and greet one another with lunch being served around noontime. The menu and reservation information is on page 7. AMS History Fi les JohnWaters-Heflin

At this writing I’ve begun taking steps towards up-dating our AMS Historian files (stored within cabinet at CFCU Reston, VA) with the idea for changing how it can be better used, not just sticking items in a drawer and pretty much forgotten. What good is it if we’re saving all these items never to be seen again? In some way, we all have helped build our AMS history. I believe it’s time to bring our history back alive! To do this I’ll be setting up displays with a few of these items at each of our AMS functions.

What might you be seeing – past newsletters, plaques, odds and ends, and likely the most interesting of all, old photos of your work friends. My hope these items will stir up a little, perhaps a lot of reminiscing. That’s the aim while adding to “KEEPING IN TOUCH and HAVING FUN!” The first Historian display was at the March AMS St. Patrick’s luncheon. The next display will be at the Spring Luncheon. I’m confident there will be a lot of – “I remember that!” or “I remember them!” or even “I was there!

Tribute to Patrick Week

It saddened many AMS members to learn of Pat Weed’s recent death on March 20. Pat was on the AMS Board and served two terms of VP (2005, 2011) and President (2006, 2012). Pat was an active representative for AMS. He and Linda attended most all of the AMS events regardless of location – in the DMV area, SC, or Florida. Pat was an encourager and mentor to new board members. He knew

no stranger and enjoyed greeting and talking with AMS members who he made welcomed. Pat will be missed. Pat’s full remembrance is on page 6.

President’s Message

Wow three months in 2019 has zoomed by and now it’s spring!! The weather is playing havoc with us – one day in the 70’s and next day your scraping the ice/frost from your windshield and need that heavy winter coat again. With the blossoming of flowers and leaves budding on the trees – Spring is Alive!! The weather is nice in May and most

folks want to get outdoors. Take a break from the gardening and yard work and attend the Spring Luncheon on May 8. The AMS Historian will have another display and your help is needed to identify folks in various pictures, the event, and possibly even the department too!

Unit Citation Streamers NGA OCC is planning an exhibit on the legacy organizations of NGA that will include flags and important awards. Unfortunately the DMA and component flags no longer have the Unit Citation Streamers attached. The alumni associations have been asked to see if anyone has one that they

could donate or knows where they might be located. This picture is an example of the streamers. If you can help, please contact Jack Hild at [email protected] .

Seeking IAGS Info AMS member, Jack Hild has been researching the stories of IAGS and supporting staff that died in accidents while conducting surveys and mapping in South and Central Americas. He recently visited the memorial at IGM (Chilean Mapping Agency) in Santiago where three US staff who died surveying Chile in 1952 and 1979 are recognized. He

expects to have a revised draft in April. Since some former IAGS employee reside in San Antonio, there maybe an opportunity for a meet and greet during the GEONINT Symposium 2-5 June 2019.

The D-Day Pilot and Flight Nurse Steve Pedone and his wife, Ximena, will be attending 75th Anniversary of D-Day ceremonies and special events this June in England and Normandy. The anniversary has special importance to Steve, since his dad was the co-pilot of the lead Pathfinder Troop Carrier C-47, dropping the first 101st AB Pathfinder Paratroopers into Drop Zone "A", and his mother was a Flight Nurse, who flew soon afterward into Normandy on the same C-47s to evacuate the wounded. Steve says, "It is an honor to represent my dad and mom who were there in 1944." The full article provides an interesting historical perspective, and is on the D-Day Squadron's web site at this link: http://ddaysquadron.org/the-d-day-pilot-and-flight-nurse/

St Patrick’s Lunch The St. Patrick’s lunch was held on Wednesday, March 13, at Lahinch’s Tavern and Grill Potomac, MD. Each guest was greeted with a choice of either a green necklace or an Irish pin with various sayings. After all we didn’t want anyone to get “pinched”!! A souvenir AMS pencil was at each place setting. Members greeted each other and were glad to get out into the sunshine and warm weather for a March afternoon. The gathering opened with the Pledge of Alliance lead by Merle Biggin, followed by Gil Monk saying the invocation, and John Koslin leading everyone singing God Bless America. Invited guests from Constellation Federal Credit Union included Bobby Josephson, CEO, Cindy Taylor, Board Chair, and Patty Fraser Board Vice-Chair. Guest from Northwest Federal Credit Union were Alex Lane, SVP Operations and Sonia White, SVP Human Resources. Attendees once again contributed to the CFCU Children’s Miracle Network campaign with a 50/50 drawing. Following the delicious lunch, Bobby Josephson and Cindy Taylor provided information concerning the pending merger

between CFCU and NWFCU resulting with AMS members expressing their concerns through a question and answer period.
