PREPARED BY MTSU SPORTS DEPARTMENT

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (12/11) – Middle Tennessee head women’s basketball coach Rick Insell has been included as one of 10 inductees into the 2012 class of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, it was

announced Sunday by the Hall of Fame’s Board of Directors.

“There is not a word out there that I can use because I am honored and humbled,” Insell said. “There is so many people, past and present, that are responsible – players, administrators, etc. I know the reason I am being inducted is because of the work that they did and I was the one in charge, more or less.”

Insell will join his fourth Hall of Fame with the honor. He previously has been included as a member of the Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletic Association Hall of Fame (2003) and National High School Hall of Fame (2007), as well as the 2010 recipient of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame’s Morgan Wootten Award for Lifetime Achievement for High School Girls’ Basketball.

The Woodbury, Tenn., native entered his seventh season at Middle Tennessee in 2011-12, having earned five NCAA Tournament appearances, coached five All-Americans and had three of his players picked to the WNBA in his previous six years. He entered the campaign with a 148-47 (.759) ledger to go along with his four Sun Belt regular-season championships and four Sun Belt Tournament titles and with six wins already this season, he has moved into third place on the school’s all-time list.

Prior to coming lead the Blue Raider program, Insell coached for 28 years (1978-2005) at Shelbyville Central High School in Shelbyville, Tenn. He logged a 775-148 (.840) record with the Golden Eaglettes, guiding them to a state-record 10 TSSAA Class 3A state championships and two USA Today national championships.

“Most of my work had been done in the community in Shelbyville. The administration there allowed

me to go across the country and play the best teams. They invested in me, Rick Insell, but also in our program. And when I came to Murfreesboro, I know that played a small part, but still the people here, I will forever be thankful to them. And I am very proud to be a part of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame.”

“I am excited about it, but more than anything when you get into coaching and you take those long bus trips and clean up the gyms, you don’t think about getting into the Hall of Fame. You take those different teams you have and the different championship you win, but not one time I can honestly say when I was putting a game plan together did the thought of going into the Tennessee Sports Hall of

Fame cross my mind.”

A name synonymous with high school girl’s basketball in the state, Insell’s teams hold the Tennessee state records for consecutive wins (110), consecutive state titles with four (1989-92) and most state championships for a coach with 10 (1986-89-90-91-92-95-2000-01-03-04).

“Because of our success at Shelbyville, that’s why I’m included in this special group. I am so, so very appreciative and don’t know where to start when thanking people, teams and players.”

His 1991 Golden Eaglette squad was selected as the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame Team of the Year, the first high school team to be honored.

The Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame is a non-profit institution located inside the Bridgestone Arena in the heart of downtown Nashville. The induction banquet will be held Saturday, May 19, 2012, at the Renaissance Hotel in Nashville.

With less than a minute before the half, Sancho McDonald caught a 12 yard pass from Murphy to make the score 25-19

The final score ended 45-19, as Middle would drop to 1-6 in the Sun Belt Conference.November 26, Florida International The Panthers of Florida International defeated the Blue Raiders 31-18 in the final home game of the 2011 season in Floyd Stadium in front of 10,227 fans. Florida would lead the first quarter 7-0 after a 5 yard pass to Faucher from Carroll after a 14 play, 84 yard drive. Alan Gendreau made a 37 yard field goal to cut the score to 7-3. Florida answered with a 1 yard run making the score 14-3. Gendreau added a 25 yard field score to cut the half time score to 14-6.

The Panthers added two more touchdowns in the third quarter, making it 28-6 as the Blue Raiders have yet to get into the endzone. Benny Cunningham run 1 yard to score on a 96 yard drive midway thru the final quarter. A two point attempt failed. Florida would recover an on-side kick attempt. Florida would add to their

score with a 25 yard field goal. Reggie Whatley scored on a 1 yard run, as Middle would score 12 points in the final quarter but it wasn’t enough as the Panthers win 31-18. Cunningham was the leading rusher for MT with 20 carries for 65 yards. Kendrick Rhodes

led the Panthers with 117 yards on 20 carries. December 3, North Texas The Blue Raiders traveled to Apogee Stadium in Denton, Texas to take on the Mean Green of North Texas. The day started off rainy with a temperature of 62 degrees. North Texas takes early 7-0 lead on an opening drive score. Raiders go 3 and out on their first two drives with 8:14 to play in 1st. The Mean Green take 14-0 lead on Lance Dunbar’s 1 yard run. There is 3:31 left in 1st. The 1st quarter would end with North

Texas leading 14-0. The Mean Green would increase the score to 21-0 early in the 2nd quarter. The Blue Raiders turn it over at the 21-yard line on a Benny Cunningham fumble. It’s not the best weather to be playing football. Things continue to go wrong for Middle as North Texas increased their lead to 31-0 at the half. North Texas would increase their lead to 52-0 in the 4th quarter. Jeff Murphy hit Kyle Griswould on a 20 yard TD pass to put Middle TN on the scoreboard, North Texas 52-7. The Green Machine added another TD and the final score ends 59-7.

Cunningham gained 80 yards on 15 carries. Jamal Gray grabbed two passes for 24 yards. Griswould added one 20-yard catch for a touchdown.

The Mean Green got a Sun Belt Conference rushing record of 313 yards and four touchdowns from Lance Dunbar while James Hamilton added 108 yards on the ground.

The Blue Raiders ended the year with six straight losses to finish 2-10 overall and 1-7 in Sun Belt play.

MTSU GETS B IG DONATIONDuring the halftime of a MTSU women basket game the announcement came on the video board. Jeff Hendrix who had given so much in his life to help the athletics department made the biggest donation in the schools history. A donation of one million dollars to build a new stadium club at Floyd stadium.Hendrix was passed away after a yearlong battle with cancer this past May at the age of 53. The Hendrix family was on hand for the announcement. With the donation announcement it was also announced that the newly named stadium club would be the Jeff Hendrix Stadium Club.During the past several years Hendrix was responsible for many improvements that have been made at MTSU, from power on RV row to lights for the soccer and track field. He even helped with the expansion of the outdoor suites at Floyd Stadium. These are just a few things that this great man had done to give back to the community. His wife Kay and children Bennie, Emily and Timi survived Hendrix

When the 2011 season began the Eagleville Eagles never imagined that they would have an undefeated season after only having one winning season in its

short eight years as a team that came in 2005. This year the Eagles managed a 10-0 regular season and a first week bye in the playoffs, ending their season with an 11-1 record. The season began with a very close win over Westmoreland in which the Eagles won but just one point, but from that point on everyone knew that this years team was not one to be overlooked.

Going into the first quarterfinal game in Eagles history, Quarterback Nathan Jernigan had 435 passing yards and was 26 of 47 in passing attempts he also had rushed for 1,328 yards in 196 carries. Behind Jernigan was teammate Chris Hale with 801 rushing yards in just 116 carries. The Eagles offense was also known as a team that did not turn the ball over much with only seven on the season (five fumbles and two interceptions). The Eagles season came up short when they faced Gordonsville and Mr. Football finalist Lineman Tyler Coen. The Eagles have nothing to lay their head down about, going undrafted in the regular season and looking as a team that is on the way to continue the success next season.

Eagles Head Coach Carson what named the district 9-A Coach of the Year and senior Nathan Jernigan was named the district 9-A MVP and senior Will Akins has been named the Defensive MVP. Along with Jernigan

being named to the 9-A team from Eagleville was Ryan Ghee, Jason Griffin, Chris Hale, Andrew Jernigan, Brandon Jordan, Brian Southerland, Patryk Tousignant and Austin Tucker. Receiving an honorable mention was Dakota Durand, Issac Lovvorn, Jordan Mora and Heath Moss.In other Eagleville news Bryan Smith signs a letter of intent with Trevecca to play baseball next season.Bryan Smith sign letter with Trevecca - Photo from Eagleville Website

Photos & Story By: Shaun Foster

I recently had the opportunity to interview Riverdale HS football players Marcelous and Mariko Odom. Marcelous is a senior and Mariko is a sophomore, and they both play running back and defensive back positions for the Warriors. It would be hard to find

game highlights that do not mention both the brothers’ names due to their exceptional talent. How exceptional? Going into their final game of this year, Mariko averaged 68.5 rushing yards per game, had 12 TD’s, 62 tackles, and scooped up 3 interceptions. Marcelous averaged 40.9 rushing yards per game had 7 TD’s, 34 tackles, and he also collected 3 interceptions. Had it not been for injuries, his numbers would have been even higher. I arrived at Riverdale Sunday

afternoon and was greeted by both Marcelous and Mariko, their parents Kenne and Kenneth, and their younger brother, Marqwell. We sat down on the

bleachers of the empty Tomahawk Stadium, and I soon discovered that football and competitiveness was a family affair. Marcelous and Mariko’s father Kenneth played high school football in Nashville, and by the time each of the brothers was 5, they had started playing organized football for the Mustangs youth team. They both went on to play football at Central Middle School, and by the time they reached high school, they were both good enough to start the Varsity team at Riverdale their Freshman years. It is a rare occurrence that a freshman plays Varsity, and they both had the talent to do it. Their younger brother Marqwell currently plays

quarterback for the Buchanan Middle School Yellow Jackets. I asked their parents if there was a time when they knew their sons wanted to play football. Kenne replied “That’s all they used to do was play football, in the yard, in the house, walk around with a football.” Kenneth answered, “When Marcelous started and [Mariko] was too

young to play, we’d be at the game, [Mariko] would be playing ball with some other little kids. When [Mariko] got old enough to play then [Marqwell] did the same thing. It was a repeat; they were just waiting their turn to play. Marcelous started it when he was five

and [Mariko] was probably two or three years old and he’d be running around with kids on the side with a football playing ball, and [Marqwell] was doing the same thing as he came up.”

With all these boys playing football and being so close together in age, I wondered if the competitiveness ever has negative consequences. “They’re competitive in video games and stuff like that, but as far as football, they always work together,” said their father, “We always work out together, pushing each other to get better.” I asked Marcelous and Mariko if they had ever played against each other in practice. Marcelous replied, “We did one day in practice when we were doing one-on-ones, receiver against a DB.” So I inquired, “When you played against each other, did you play a little harder?” A big grin and a “yeah” told the story. They may have played harder or hit harder, but it was to push each other to be better. Was there a little bit of ‘I can out do you’? Well, maybe.

I asked Marcelous what moment stood out the most in his 13-year football career. “I gotta’ say when we played Oakland my sophomore year,” he said without much hesitation, “We were winning 14-7, and they were driving. They were on about the 10-yard line with a minute something left. They ran a pass play and I intercepted it, so basically after that, the game was over.” Mariko’s most memorable moment in his 10- year career, “My first

game my first year here when I rushed for a hundred yards. My first game out, I thought that was my most memorable moment.” I am sure that there will be more great moments because they both intend to play in college and would not mind a professional career either. Of course, with the good comes the bad sometimes. I inquired about difficult times that they had to work through. Mariko answered first with, “Being injured my Freshman year for four or five games, then coming back again for a game and then getting injured again.” As for Marcelous, “Being injured this season.” Then, he continued with a grin, “and when I get pass interference calls when I don’t think it’s pass interference.”

Marcelous has completed his senior football season, but his career is not over. He has been talking to colleges about

playing, and a football scholarship seems very likely. In the meantime, he will be playing basketball for the Riverdale Warriors this winter. Marcelous said he would like to become a coach or athletic trainer some day. Mariko still has two years of Riverdale

football left, but he will not be the only Odom on the field for long. Marqwell will be joining the Warriors in 2013 when Mariko starts his senior year. As good as Mariko is now, there is no doubt he too will be playing college ball after leaving Riverdale. Mariko says he would like to be an engineer or perhaps even come back to Riverdale to coach.

Kenne had this to say about their accomplishments, “They are playing well, doing good in school, they both are on the All-District team this time, so I’m really proud of them.” Kenneth beamed as he commented on his sons, “Mariko having the year he had this year as a sophomore,” and “I know all his (Marcelous’) hard work he’s been doing over the years has paid off. Now I know he’s going to college, and I know Mariko is gonna’ follow, and I know Marqwell is gonna’ follow after him, that’s just the proudest thing for me.”

This is one football family you should definitely keep an eye on. Mariko should light up the field for Riverdale again next season.

Watch out for Marqwell when he puts on a Warriors jersey in 2013. Although Marcelous will move on next year, his college football career, and perhaps beyond, will be worth seeing.
