It couldn’t have been a more perfect night for some football at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville with a cool 58 degrees at kickoff, it felt very much like football weather. The MTSU Blue Raiders traveled to Knoxville for the 2nd ever meeting with the Volunteers and this one played out much like that last trip.

The Blue Raiders are now 0-2 against the flagship football team for the State of Tennessee but that doesn’t mean they went down without a fight. Many anticipated a blow out of the Volunteer side but that didn’t happen. MTSU actually held the VOLS scoreless the entire second half but turnovers plagued the Blue Raiders as each quarterback threw an interception.

The VOLS Tauren Poole ran for two touchdowns as Tennessee beat Middle Tennessee 24-0 on Saturday night.

The Vols (4-5) cruised to their 26th homecoming victory in 28 seasons after a

month that saw them lose four consecutive games to Southeastern Conference opponents.

Austin Johnson intercepted Middle Tennessee’s Logan Kilgore and ran the ball to the Blue Raiders 7. Poole had a 1-yard touchdown to give Tennessee a 7-0 lead with 9:05 in the first quarter.

Vols Freshman Justin Worley got his first career touchdown on a 47-yard throw down the middle of the field that hit Da’Rick Rogers in the end zone. Worley was 23 of 32 for 291 yards. Rogers caught the ball nine times for 137 yards and the score.

MTSU’s Kilgore had just 25 yards passing when Jeff Murphy replaced him early in the second quarter. Murphy finished 14 of 21 for 108 yards and an interception for the Blue Raiders (2-6).

MTSU travels to Louisiana for a Sunbelt Conference game on Nov. 12th against Louisiana-Monroe.

FOOTBALL AWARDS

TO BE PRESENTED ON MONDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 2011Embassy Suites Hotel & Conference Center, Murfreesboro11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Nashville, Tennessee, November 8, 2011 - The Tennessee Titans Mr. Football Awards will be presented to the top 10 backs and linemen in five classifications of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association on Monday, November 28, 2011, at the Embassy Suites Hotel & Conference Center in Murfreesboro. For the tenth consecutive year, the top kicker in the state will be recognized with a Mr. Football Award. There are three finalists in this category, regardless of their school’s classification.

“High school football in Tennessee enjoys a great tradition throughout the state and we are pleased to join the TSSAA for the fourth consecutive year in saluting these fine young men at the Tennessee Titans Mr. Football Awards,” said Adams. “The young men that are recognized with these awards are truly the best of the best! They are selected not only for their football skills, but for their strong character and academic achievements and we’re honored to join the TSSAA in saluting them!”

A committee of statewide sports writers selected winners based on performance in the 2011 regular season. Academics and character were also taken into consideration. High school head coaches and members of the media nominated the finalists.

“We’re very thankful to Mr. Adams and the Tennessee Titans for their continued commitment to high school athletics in serving as the title sponsor for these awards,” stated Bernard Childress, Executive Director of the TSSAA.

“We are obviously excited and appreciative about being involved with the Tennessee Titans. They have helped make the recognition of the 33 student-athletes, their families, and schools possible,” added Childress.

This is the twenty-seventh year that the Mr. Football Awards have been presented to Tennessee’s best high school football players. Plaques will be presented to 22 other finalists.

Approximately 600 people, including the honorees, their families, coaches, school administrators and members of the media from all parts of the state, are expected to attend the 2011 luncheon.

Mike Keith, play-by-play voice of the Tennessee Titans, will emcee the awards presentation. Live videostream of the awards will be provided for free by the TSSAA Network. Those interested can watch the awards by going to

The same weekend that Murfreesboro’s Middle Tennessee State University football left to play the Volunteers in Knoxville, Knoxville’s Farragut Admirals rolled into Murfreesboro to meet the Blackman Blaze. These two teams had never met on the field before. There were many unknowns, but one thing was for sure, two 7-3 teams meeting in the opening week of the TSSAA playoffs was going to be exciting!

Blackman got their hands on the ball first and quickly scored with less than 3 minutes gone from the clock. The Admirals soon began marching down the field themselves. They moved into Blackman territory but their drive was stopped by a fumble recovered by Blackman on the 35 yard line. The Blaze could not cash in on the turnover and were forced to punt.

After a punt from each team, Farragut started rolling toward the endzone but found themselves in 4th down on the Blackman 21 yard line. Quarterback Cody Rule kept the ball and rushed forward enough for the 1st down. The Admirals could not get any further than the 16 yard line and settled for a field goal attempt. The kick was easy money for Jonathan King, whose record is 53 yards among his 4 field goals of 50 yards or more. The score was now 7-3 with 1:37 left in the first quarter.

The Blaze had to punt after a 3rd and 10 sack by the admirals’ Caleb Whitney. Farragut picked up where they left off on their last possession. Only this time, Jacob Johnson delivered the ball to the

endzone from the 18 yard line. The extra point brought the score to 10-7 with 10:02 to go in the 2nd quarter. Blackman’s next possession was plagued with flags. Despite a couple of huge runs from I’Tavius Mathers and long runs from Dee Mathers and Antonio Allen, the Blaze had to punt again at the 6:47 mark of the 2nd quarter.

The Admirals continued their domination with another successful drive that ended with Jacob Johnson in the endzone again. After the extra point kick, Farragut had 17 unanswered points on the scoreboard. Blackman received the ball with 2:07 remaining but were forced to

punt with just 21 seconds left in the half. Cody Rule took a knee to end the 1st half. The Blaze started the game with a bang, but now found themselves in a 17-7 hole that might not be easy to climb out of. Blackman had trouble keeping the ball off their end of the field on both offense and defense for most of the half.

Farragut got their hands on the ball to start the second half. Their drive did not last long before the ball was fumbled and recovered by Christian Singleton less than 5 minutes into the half. After several runs from I’Tavius Mathers, the Blaze found the endzone again with 7:49 to go in the 3rd. I’Tavius Mathers’ nine yard run closed the score to 17-14.

The Admirals punted after having the ball less than 3 minutes to start Blackman’s drive at the 17 yard line. The 1st play made everyone in the place jump to their feet as I’Tavius Mathers ran 83 yards for a touchdown! The Blaze took the lead 21-17. The Admirals fumbled on the kick return and Blackman recovered the ball on the Farragut 20. Blackman quickly cashed in with an 18 yard touchdown pass

fromTyler Strickland to Thahal May. The Blaze put 21 points on the board in the first 11 minutes of the 2nd half. Farragut got the ball back to end the 3rd quarter of play and this game was far from over.

The 4th quarter opened with Farragut continuing their drive. The Admirals seemed determined to prove they would not go quietly. The drive was wrapped up with a 7 yard touchdown to Zach Thomas. The Admirals elected to go for a two point conversion to bring them within 3 points of the Blaze. The attempt was unsuccessful and the score remained 28-23 with 10:00 left to find the remaining points.

A touchback and a 3 yard gain found the Blaze at 2nd and 7 on their own 23. I’Tavius Mathers almost scored again but was finally stopped at the Farragut 36 after he had sprinted 41 yards! Blackman chose to go for it on 4th and 4 on the Farragut 29. I’Tavius Mathers needed the 25 yard line but was not stopped until the 17 mark. Two plays later he entered the endzone in a 5 yard rush. Blackman’s

lead was now extended to 35-23 with only 5:45 to go.

Farragut steadily marched down the field, including a 4th and 2 conversion, to close the deficit to 35-30 by way of a Cody Rule to Jacob Johnson pass. The Admirals attempted an onside kick, but they touched the ball before it went 10 yards so Blackman took over on the Farragut 49 yard line. The drive, that included a 25 yard run from I’Tavius Mathers, was finished off with a 7 yard touchdown run. The extra point was missed, but the drive added 6 points to the board and used up all of Farragut’s timeouts.

The Admirals began their next drive with 1:27 remaining in the game. As they steadily marched down the field, it became apparent that this game was not over. Cody Rule threw from sideline to sideline and finished off the charge with a 13 yard touchdown to Braden Urevick. A 2 point conversion pass to Zach Thomas brought the score to 41-38 with 31 seconds remaining. An onside kick and a field goal from Jonathan King’s 53 yard leg was all that was needed for overtime. However, Farragut’s onside kick found its way into the hands of Blackman’s Dee Mathers. Tyler Strickland took a knee to run out the clock and give Blackman the win.

I’Tavius Mathers broke his single game record with 342 rushing yards. Blackman will face a more familiar opponent when they go to Riverdale to take on the Warriors in round two of the TSSAA playoffs.

MURFREESBORO -- When a high school football team with a 3-7 record goes against an undefeated team with 10 victories this season, the team naturally will pull out all it stops. That is exactly what the Coffee County Red Raiders did early against the Riverdale Warriors in the Class 6A first-round playoff game at Tomahawk Stadium Nov. 4.Two trick plays by the Red Raiders tied the game at 14-all in the first quarter. The Warriors answered with 49 points, including 35 more points in the first half, enroute to a 63-21 shellacking. The Warriors scored on nine straight possessions. This is the 11th consecutive year that Riverdale has won its first playoff game.Sophomore running back Mariko Odum and senior running back Adam Davenport each scored two touchdowns, junior running back Ricardo Terry rushed for a touchdown, senior running back Marcelous Odom rushed for a touchdown and caught a pass for a touchdown, Tad Onwu scored on a kickoff return and junior fullback Brandon Stewart rushed for a touchdown.Mariko Odum scored his first touchdown, a 65-yard run, on the Warriors first play of the game. The Red Raiders answered by scoring off a 41-yard pass play. A double-reverse pass set up the score.Terry’s 31-yard run put the Warriors ahead 14-7. A 71-yard pass play by Coffee County tied the game. Marcelous Odum caught a 35-yard pass to put the Warriors ahead for good in the first quarter.Early in the second quarter, Warriors’ junior quarterback Dillon Woodruff rolled to his left and rifled a bullet to Odum

from four yards out to put the Warriors ahead 27-14. The kick by Amin Arman was good. After the Red Raiders went three and out, the Warriors scored again at the 8:23 mark. Davenport scored on a 44-yard run where he slipped through several tackles and sprinted down the sideline.

Arman’s kick was good. After another Red Raiders punt, the Warriors started from their 48-yard line. Three plays later, Mariko Odum scored from 27 yards out at 5:21. His earlier 17-yard scramble set up the score. Arman split the uprights again.

The Red Raiders answered by scoring on a several-yard pass play. Brent Wicks bobbled the ball but maintained his concentration to haul the ball in for the score at the 1:57 mark.Still enough time for the Warriors to add to their onslaught. Davenport scored on a 5-yard run with 12 seconds remaining. A long pass play set up the score. The third quarter opened with Onwu’s 65-yard

kickoff return. This set in motion the mercy rule where the clock didn’t stop.On the Warriors next possession, Stewart scored from four yards out for the Warriors final score.

I first saw Matthew Skaggs when he was standing on a staircase giving a drivers meeting for the season finale of the South Eastern Karting Alliance (SEKA). As he went over the rules and pointers of the race while drivers listened intently, I couldn’t help but think, “I thought I was here to interview a driver.” Matt was pulling triple duty as a track official, crewman on his kart, his brother’s kart and his nephew’s kart, and he still found time to put on a helmet and do what he loves, and that is race. Matt was very friendly and easy to talk to, the kind of person you like even before you know why. We discussed his racing career while he worked on a Clone kart and racers thundered by on the 1/2 mile road course at Twin Fountains Raceway. Matt was born in January of 1978 and grew up in Middle Tennessee. Matt inherited his love of racing from his father, Mark, who

started racing karts around the time Matt was born. By the time Matt was 5, he was already putting on a helmet and driving. He began racing competitively at the age of 8 at places like Nashville Speedway, Highland Rim, and even in Kentucky. They soon began going to the WKA Nationals and continued going until he was 18. How big are the Nationals? Well he has raced among drivers like A.J. Allmendinger and the late Dan Wheldon to name a couple. And yes, he was winning races too, and lots of them. So many, in fact, that he could not give me an exact number but over 75, and probably closer to 100 races in his karting career.

Matt gave up karting for a while and moved on to bigger vehicles in 2000 when he started racing cars at Highland Rim Speedway. He raced in several divisions and tracks around Nashville and added 17 wins to his already dizzying number of kart victories. The love of karting seemed too great though, and in 2008 he returned to kart racing with his brother Joseph and his nephew Elijah who had just reached racing age. They had to drive over 6 hours to Indiana to race karts on asphalt. After making the trips to Indiana for a couple years he decided he wanted to race closer

to home. In 2010, Matt formed the South Eastern Karting Alliance. He was able to rent Twin Fountains Raceway near Shelbyville, TN, a track that had laid dormant for over 5 years. Now that they had a 1/4 mile oval and a 1/2 mile road course, SEKA could hold races in Middle Tennessee. SEKA hosted four races and a points championship for their 2011 season. The races have attracted drivers from all over Tennessee, Alabama and several other states.

Matt went to Smyrna High School in Smyrna, TN. He married his high school sweetheart and has 3 daughters. Matt is a field representative for Star Fence Company of Murfreesboro, TN, which is a family business, started by his grandfather and run by his father. As exhausting as his racing career sounds, it is only his hobby. Kart racing is a family affair with the Skaggs, Matt, Joseph, and Elijah drive and his Dad is their crew chief who

sets up the cars and builds the engines. You will even find his Mom at the SEKA table helping with administrative duties.

Matthew Skaggs has raced for over 25 years at tracks all over the southeast and beyond in a number of different vehicles from small to large. I asked Matt what the most memorable of his 100 plus wins was. His answer, the 300 lap endurance race at Highland Rim Speedway in 2008. At a track where most feature races are 25-50 laps, he stormed around Highland Rim 300 times to finish 9 laps ahead of 2nd place! Now that the SEKA season is over Skaggs Racing plans to hit the World Karting Association Nationals in Daytona Beach, Florida once again. SEKA plans to have a karting season again next year and you will find the Skaggs family tearing up the track some more.

For more information on SEKA you can visit them at www.sekakarting.com

Murfreesboro, TN (11/7)…The Lady Blue Raiders basketball team defeated the Martin Methodist Redhawks 127-55. Middle would go over the 100-point mark for the second straight game. Ebony Rowe would lead all scoring with 30 points. Kortni Jones had 25. In a losing effort for Martin, Vee Young had 23 points.

Jones scored the first 6 points of the game for Middle, two field goals, and two free throws. Rowe put in a bucket to make it 8-0, Blue Raiders.

The Redhawks Micah Anderson went down on the court with a twisted ankle. She was taken to the back of the visitor’s bench and attended by the team’s trainers.

The Redhawks should substitute a squad of five players at a time.

Ellen Pointer scored the Redhawks first point when she put a basket in from the free throw line at 14:31 making the score 9-1 in favor of the Middle TN.

At the 13:00 mark, Middle would lead 15-3.

The Redhawks again would substitute for all five players on the court. After several misses, Jones hit on a 3 point try from the left side, making the score 20-3 at the 11:29 mark.

Vee Young put in a basket for Martin and were fouled. With a free throw, the score is now 22-6. Martin-Methodist is guilty of several turnovers.

Rowe made good on a 2-point basket and the score is now 24-9. Jones is leading all scorers with 9 points so far.

A foul by Elie on Franklin sent the Redhawks to the

free throw line and her one basket cut the score to 26-12.

Jones made her second 3 point basket at 6:53 mark, making the score 29-13. She followed that up 10 seconds later off a steal with another 3 pointer. The

score is now 32-14. Young put a free throw in for the Redhawks. Shanice Cason made a three-point basket and the score is 35-15. Cason would miss on her second 3-point attempt.

With 4:02, Rowe would score on a layup with an assist from Jones. Score is now 39-17.

Rowe is fouled in the process of shooting and makes one out of two from the free throw line making it 40-17.

Raynor makes a layup and is fouled. She misses on the free throw. Rowe would go to the foul line at the 2:39 mark, making the score 44-17. On a Redhawk turnover, Rowe would score a two-point basket. Laken Leonard made good on a 3 point basket, and the score is 49-19.

With less than a minute to go, Middle’s Rowe commits her third personal foul, this

one was an offensive foul under the Blue Raider’s basket. The half would end with the score 52-21.

Jones leads all scoring with 15 points followed by Rowe with 14. Jones made 3 of 11, 3 point attempts. Middle shot 37.3% from the field and 52.9% from the free throw line. Martin Methodist shot only 18.2% from the field and 76.5% from the line. Young lead their scoring with 13 for Martin. They did not score any 3-point baskets on 4 attempts. Middle made 5 out of 18 on three point baskets. Middle played 10 players while Martin played 11.

Middle gets the ball to start the second half and Elie puts in a 2-point basket from short distance. She follows it up with two misses from the free throw line after being fouled by Young.

The Redhawks continue to suffer from turnovers. Elie goes down on the court with what appears to be the wind knocked out of her. Middle leads 58-21.

With 16:38 left in the game, Middle would increase their lead to 71-21. The Lady Blue Raiders would score 21 unanswered points to open the second half. Martin would not score until the 14:17, making the score 79-23. Young puts in a layup giving her 17 points.

Middle’s full court pressure would force numerous Martin turnovers. Young continues to be the only scoring threat for Martin, as she adds another basket. Score is now 89-31 at the 11:38 mark. Rowe, Jones and Elie are the scoring machines for Middle with Rowe leading with 30 points.

Jones 3 point basket at the 8:18 mark puts the Lady Blue Raiders over the century mark, 101-37. It was her 4th 3 pointers, giving her 22 points so far.

Molly McFadden, a senior from Sparta, made 1 out of 2 free throws, giving the Raiders a 104-39 lead.

Starter Becca Smithson from Dickson fouled out at the 6:43 mark. She leaves scoring only 2 points. Stephanie Myers, a 6′ 5″ Lavergne grad, enters the game and scores her first basket as a Lady Blue Raider.

With 3:19 Myers would commit her first foul, sending Keri O’Neil to the line. She made good on one free throw, making the score 117-49.

Coach Insell played his whole bench, as Middle would now lead 125-51. Rachel Brown made good on a 3-point basket with less than 1 minute to play. McFadden would score the last points for Middle with two free throws. Ellen Pointer would add 1 free throw and the game would end 127-55.

Kortni Jones was named the Middle Tennessee player of the game.

Middle would shoot 48.0% from the field for the game. 40.6% in 3-point attempts and 62.5% from the free throw line. They had 31 offensive rebounds and 25 defensive ones. The home team only committed 16 turnovers compared to 45 for the visitors.

The next game for Middle TN is the Lady Lion Classic in University Park, PA on the campus of Penn State University on November 11. Middle is home again on November 17th when they host South Dakota State at 7:00 pm.
