Department:EnglishCourse:WomeninLiteratureLevel:HonorsCredits:2.5(One-Semester)CourseDescription:Women’sLiteratureisaone-semesterPatternscoursethatintroduces11thand12thgradestudentstothehistory,traditions,andformsofliteraturewrittenbywomeninEnglish.Wewillexaminetheeffectsofgenderonliteratureandconsiderhowgenderintersectswithrace,ethnicity,class,sexualorientationandotherfactorsinshapingidentity.Wewillalsoconsiderthemultiplewayswomenwritershaverespondedtobeingsilencedthroughouthistory.Wewillexplorearichanddiverserangeofwritersandworkstoidentifytherecurrentimages,themes,andstylesofanevolvingcannon.Worksofpoetry,prose,drama,non-fiction,andfilmwillbestudied.Thiscourseisdividedintothreeunits:GenderandIdentity,VoiceandSilence,andImagesandRoles.Standards:RL.11-12.1/11-12.2/11-12.3/11-12.4/11-12.5/11-12.6/11-12.7/11-12.9RI.11-12.1/11-12.2/11-12.3/11-12.5/11-12.6/W.11-12.1/11-12.2/11-12.4/11-12.5/11-12.6/11-12.7/11-12.8/11-12.9/11-12.10SL.11-12.1/11-12.2/11-12.3/11-12.4/11-12.5/11-12.6L.11-12.1/11-12.2/11-12.3/11-12.4/11-12.5/11-12.6TextandCourseMaterials:

ofliteratureinEnglishwrittenbywomenovertime.2. Expresstheirunderstandingoftherelationshipbetweenliteratureandthehistorical/culturalcontexts

inwhichitwaswritten.3. Analyzethedifferencesbetweenmen’sandwomen’srolesinliterature,includingstereotypesand

archetypesofwomen,asareflectionofthehistoricalandsocialconditionsofwomen4. Examinetheirownlivesincomparisonwiththoseportrayedinreadings.5. Understandtheliteraryconcerns,themes,stylesandsymbolsofselectedwriters.6. Demonstrateanunderstandingofsuchliteraryterms,themes,strategiesandissuesrelevanttothe

worksbeingstudied.7. Beabletoanalyzeandinterpretindividualworksthrough11thand12thgradewrittenandverbal

discourse.8. Analyzeliteraturethroughdiscussionandwriting.

Evaluation&Assessment:

• Classworkassignedinclasswillbedueattheendofclasseveryday,unlessotherwisespecifiedbytheteacher.Allclassworkmustbeturnedinontimeonthedayitwasassignedinordertoreceivefullcredit.Noclassworkwillbeacceptedwithoutname,titleordate.Lateclassworkwillreceivepartialcredituptotwoweeks.*Aftertwoweeksstudentswillnotreceivecreditforlateclasswork.

• Homeworkassignedinclasswillbedueatthebeginningofclassthenextday,unlessotherwisespecifiedbytheteacher.Allhomeworkmustbeturnedinontimeinordertoreceivefullcredit.Nohomeworkwillbeacceptedwithoutname,titleordate.Latehomeworkwillreceivepartialcredituptotwoweeks.*Aftertwoweeksstudentswillnotreceivecreditforlatehomework.

• Quizzesmayormaynotbeannounced.Studentsareexpectedtocometoclasshavingreadallassignedreadings.

• Testswillbeannounced;EnglishDepartmenttestingdaysareMondayandWednesday.Studentswillreceiveatleastaweek’snoticefortests.

• Essaysareassignedinclassandrequireplanningandpreparation.Studentswillreceiveaclassworkorhomeworkgradeforeachstepofthewritingprocess.(Brainstorming,Draft,Peer-review,Finaldraft)

o Allwrittenstudentworkmustbeindividualandinthestudent’sownvoice.Itisunacceptabletocopyand/orplagiarizeworkfromanysource,includinganotherstudent.Pleaserefertothestudenthandbookforpoliciesregardingcheatingandplagiarism.

• Presentationswillbegradedonpreparation,contentanddelivery.
