Why your resume isn’t getting read

Want to avoid the resume rejection pile? Make sure you aren’t making any of these big mistakes on your CV!

SpellingDon’t rely on your computer to spell check your resume. Sure, use the computer to search for any words underlined in red. But make sure that you also check your document yourself, and then get someone else to proof it for you, too.

Grammar Watch out for switching tenses, changing the capitalization of proper nouns throughout the document, and maintaining consistency with formats such as dates.

Punctuation Don’t use exclamation marks, and make sure there are full stops at the end of all your sentences.

Accuracy Double check that any dates, company names and addresses are correct.

Address the position criteria Review the job advertisement and make list of the items considered essential and desirable for the role. When writing for cover letter and resume, make sure you address each item on that list.

Resume length Keep your resume to one or two pages in length. You will get the chance to discuss things in detail if you progress through to the interview stage.

Check the cut-off dateSome job advertisements are open for a limited amount of time, so make sure you check the cut-off date before you send your resume to avoid wasting your time.

Don’t get too personalThere are details you don’t need to include in your resume such as: salary history, age, sex, race, relationship status etc.

Avoid these simple mistakes and your resume will avoid the rejection pile.
