MORE THAN THE MONA LISA…

Why the Renaissanceartists rocked the art world

Medieval Art

In the Middle Ages, everyone was busy trying to show how holy they were. Thus, art was mostly about religion.

Even the music was religious

Gregorian Chant was the hot musical style…

It was used by the monks and priests during church services.

Painting Perspective

Paintings were generally two-dimensional, meaning they looked flat to the viewer.

Painting Subjects

The subject of Medieval art was usually God, or how to get to Heaven and avoid Hell.

Tricks of the trade

To show someone was Holy, Medieval artists painted a halo or bright light around their head.

They also made important figures bigger than everyone else in the picture

Then came

The Renaissance Artists!!!!

These artists changed the way art would look forever.

Their study of architecture led to the creation of beautiful buildings, with features no one had ever seen before

Linear Perspective

Leon Battista discovered a mathematical formula to create linear perspective.

Using this method, painters were able to give paintings depth, making them look more realistic.

Suddenly paintings were 3-D!

RENAISSANCE ARTISTS USED SEVERAL NEW METHODS

TO ENHANCE THEIR ART

PAINT Renaissance artists began to make paint

out of new materials, like oil or even eggshells. This resulted in new colors, textures, and effects in their work.

Subjects Renaissance artists began to use subjects

other than religious ones in their work. They painted landscapes, ordinary people

doing regular things, Self portrait s were also popular! They often painted figures naked,

because they believed the human body was God’s greatest creation.

Symmetry

Symmetry was also an important tool to the Renaissance artists. A great example of this is the Rose Window at Notre Dame Cathedral

AnatomyRenaissance artists studied anatomy and used their new knowledge of the human body to make their subjects look realistic.

Use of Light and Dark

Medieval art was not shaded.

Renaissance artists used paint to create

a feeling of light, shadow, and

darkness.

Compare these two paintings. Which is Medieval and which is Renaissance?
