Whenever we talk to someone who is looking to change jobs, the first question we

always ask is, why?

Why do you want to change jobs and why now?

From our perspective it's really important to find out, understand and explore the

real answer to this question. To understand why someone is unhappy in their job

and to understand if changing jobs is in their best interest.

Why do you want to change jobs?

Whilst on the face of it this is a pretty straight forward question it's actually

complex and a question that we would recommend everyone who is thinking

of making a job change thinks through thoroughly.

Sometimes, not always, what you gain by staying in a job can improve what you

would have learned or gained by moving to a new job. So, if you are thinking of

changing jobs, first ask yourself why and then see if you can work through

these issues?

Everyone's reasons will be unique, there are common themes and most people

move jobs for one, or a combination of these 5 reasons.

1 Looking to improve pay

and benefits Many people feel they are underpaid.

Before looking for another job try fixing the issue first. Arrange a

meeting with your manager, go prepared with data on current salary

levels, put together a document that lists all of your key projects and

tasks and talk this through with your line manager.

Is there the chance to negotiate a pay rise without having to move jobs?

Do you have a long commute to work or are you looking to change

your working hours.

Have you spoken to your existing company about negotiating

working from home a few days a week?

2 Better work/life balance

3You may feel your manager or company isn't supportive of your

career development. Have you taken the time to define your

career aspirations? Have you created a career development plan

that includes actions you believe are needed to achieve your

goals? Have you shared this information with your manager and

asked for his or her help and support?

Greater opportunities for

advancement

Have you spoken to your manager, told him you're a bit bored?

Talk to them about the type of projects you would like to do? How

you would like to broaden your experience?

4 More challenging work

Better fit for skill set

5 Is there a chance to move into a different team , work on different

projects, upskill, get training or work on more interesting projects.

What might seem like a reason to look for a different job could turn out to be

something within your ability to control and change. Managers generally have a

fair amount of discretion when it comes to allocating work to their direct

employees. Taking the time to talk through this with your manager might improve

your situation enough that you won't need to look for a job elsewhere.

The process of finding and starting a new job can be a stressful one, if the move is

right then the benefits are definitely worth it.
