• 41 institutions identified in early Sept that might have difficulty reporting 2005-06 IPEDS data

• 9 were able to report all components

• Flagged in data collection system• Not included in followup prompting• Nonresponse for these institutions

will NOT be a compliance issue

New HR format

• Respondents generally favorable about new format

• Easier to ensure consistency across sections, but….– Did experience a couple of

editing glitches

New HR format

• Combination of an old server and the new, combined HR format had negative impact on system performance in winter

• NCES replaced collection server toward end of collection period

• Collection was extended

Finance in winter

• Almost a third of total Finance surveys were completed during Winter collection

Spring collection

• Email sent to KHs 10 days before institution close– Suggested folks not wait until

last few days to enter data– Due to high volume and ED

firewall issue

Spring Collection Extended

• 1-week followup reminder was not sent out

• Sent email notice to 281 institutions and 36 coordinators on 5/2

• Extended institution close date to 5/10

• New coordinator close date 5/17

Current projects of interest

First-professional degree classification

• Technical Review Panel met in Dec 2005

• TRP suggestions posted, comments invited

• Revising suggestions • Will be posted at

http://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/whatsnew.asp

Comments on TRP Proposal

• General agreement with TRP suggestions to eliminate first-professional but still distinguish graduate degree programs designed for research and scholarly careers from those designed for professional practice.

• Requests for further guidance in how to categorize certain degrees; either refinement of TRP proposed definitions or lists as guidance (for example, Survey of Earned Doctorate’s list of research doctorates)

New institutional category variable

• Technical Review Panel met in Oct 2005

• Addressed issue of sector bleed, degree creep

• TRP summary available at http://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/trp13.asp

• Derived variable added to PAS• Will be used to group institutions for

tabulated data in addition to sector

instcatDegree-granting

Baccalaureate or above1 - Grad w/ no undergrad degrees2 - Primarily bacc or above3 - Other bacc granting

4 - Associate's + certificates

Nondegree-granting5 - Above bacc certificates6 - Sub-bacc certificates

Data Feedback Report 2006

• Will be sent to keyholders and CEOs in fall 2006

• Keyholders can upload custom comparison groups for their 2006 report through June 30 in the data collection system

• Instructions are available at – http://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/comp_gp.asp – http://airweb.org/ (click IPEDS

Training)

Data Feedback Report 2007

• Technical Review Panel for suggestions for design of 2007 report held March 27-28 in DC

• Look for report posted under What’s New in IPEDS

Combined data allocation

• Project to allocate combined IPEDS data among parent reporters and children recently completed

• Goal was to make IPEDS data more usable

• Keyholders were contacted for input

• Allocation factors for 2004 have been added to PAS (response status information)

3 Data Quality & Validity Studies

• Compared original 2002-03 IPEDS data to revised 2002-03 data and non-IPEDS sources– http://nces.ed.gov/pubsearch/pubsinfo.asp?

pubid=2005175

• Currently doing study comparing IPEDS Finance data with data reported by institutions to EZ Audit

• Next will compare IPEDS HR data with non-IPEDS sources

Training

• AIR & IPEDS developing new modularized training materials, delivery modes, to supplement workshop format– Webinars– Online courses– Tutorials

• Covering both data submission and data use

Webinars

• Currently available:– New Keyholders (3 versions)– Finance (3 versions)– Uploading custom comparison

groups

• Done live, then posted to AIR website – http://airweb.org/ (click on IPEDS

Training)

Web Resources

•Don’t forget to check IPEDS What’s New: http://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/whatsnew.asp– Reports on recent TRPs– Reports on implementation of TRP

suggestions– In-depth discussion of other timely

issues– Links to other documents on the

web

IPEDS Data Use Tools

IPEDS Tool News

• New COOL (!!!)• IPEDS Peer Analysis System

– Report Templates– New interface (!!!)

• IPEDS DAS– Tables Library

New COOL (!!!)

http://collegesearch.nces.ed.gov

Background

• Revisions based on work of 2005 AIR/NCES Senior Fellow

• Purpose of project was to enhance the ongoing development and improvement of COOL

• Included:– Comparative review of COOL and other

college search sites– Interviews/focus groups with high

school students, parents, counselors

Recommendations

• Change URL– Old: http://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/cool– New: http://collegesearch.nces.ed.gov

• Improve search options, include:– Map of USA to search by location– Quick search function– Search by major/program

More Recommendations

• Modify language/terminology• Revise page header to

emphasize COOL • Modify and relocate page

navigation• Incorporate compare function

Slide with graphs

Forms Facsimiles, Report Templates

• PAS Reports & Stats• Forms Facsimiles

– IC now available 2001-2005

• Report Templates– Pre-formatted reports for focus

institution and comparison group– TRP defined ~40 that will be

added this spring on a flow basis

IPEDS DAS

• Table generator– Available now at

http://nces.ed.gov/dasol/– Create tables using 2002, 2003,

2004 IPEDS data– View and download output – Save and modify Table Parameter

Files (TPFs)

Also IPEDS DAS

• Tables library – http://nces.ed.gov/das/library/– Contains hundreds of tables (will

be expanded to thousands)– Already created -- just click

•ED Tab tables•Compendium tables•State tables

New Peer Tool Interface

• TRP held in Nov 2005• Participants tried out the new

interface and loved it– Variable search– Easily choose multiple years of

same variable

• Suggested we deploy it ASAP

Influences on the Future

HEA Reauthorization

• Current HEA extended through September 2006

• House and Senate bills differ but both focus on consumer info and accountability

• House bill: HR 609 – passed March 30• Senate bill: S1614 – rumored will be

put on Senate calendar “soon”• Then, House and Senate versions get

reconciled

Commission on the Future of Higher Ed

• Attempt to answer questions such as: – What skills will students need to

succeed in the 21st century? – How can we make sure America

stays the world's leader in academic research?

– And, how can we make sure opportunities for quality higher education and best jobs are open to all students?

Commission Preliminary Reports

• Preliminary papers posted to web, including Accountability/Consumer Information by Chair Charles Miller

• Report suggests that Commission will likely recommend changes to COOL as well as expansion of IPEDS data collection– Weighting and ranking on COOL– “Smaller slices” of data reported in

IPEDS

Commission Final Report

• By mid- to late-September 2006• Will serve as a blueprint for a 21st

century higher education system • Potential to have major

implications for IPEDS• For more info, see Commission
